or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions we call them england we should call the women England but also adding an ess to a noun an be considered sexist by many. it has just struck me as odd.

Sorry I just couldn’t disagree more, I think you’re enormously off base. There are so many examples of sexism in sport but this isn’t one of them.

bingbongnoise · 02/07/2019 20:21

YEAH, Lionesses IS a bit sexist...

I think we should call them the tasty-tittie-totties.

Don't look up the Australian team @greenlloon

They're called the MATILDAs Grin

GlacindaTheTroll · 02/07/2019 20:22

*no they dont i was listening to 5 live and ever time it was the lionesses not England"

Well it would be. You wouldn't call one team by another's name.

And as quoted above it would be the Lions/Three Lions when talking about the men's team.

Lions/Lionesses the whole damned time, as you would know if you were following regularly

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 02/07/2019 20:22

FFS

Yes YABU

bridgetreilly · 02/07/2019 20:23

It's only sexist if you think men should be allowed to join the lionesses...

latulipe · 02/07/2019 20:24

Ffs.

Passthecherrycoke · 02/07/2019 20:25

I agree with you OP (although what’s worse is them constantly being called girls)

Three lions isn’t used in the same way at all. No one says “the 3 lions are playing tonight” “the 3 lions have made the semi Final” 3 lion Keane has an injury” - they are simply referred to as “england”
In the majority of the situations the women are referred to as lionesses

ilovesooty · 02/07/2019 20:25

FFS.

Madmoggie · 02/07/2019 20:27

Of course it’s not sexist-how silly can you get ffs.

Alsohuman · 02/07/2019 20:27

Ffs indeed.

TheHopefulTraveller · 02/07/2019 20:28

I get it, OP, and I thought the same myself. Yes, the men are (sometimes) called the lions and for me that's the whole problem - that women always have to be defined in relation to men. It's as though the men are the first, best and orginal version and the women can only exist as a subsequent variation on the norm. The only reason I don't care enough to start my own thread is that I can't bloody stand football (probably also heresy but I don't care about that either).

happytobemrsg · 02/07/2019 20:28

I don’t think it’s sexist in the slightest 🤷‍♀️

greenlloon · 02/07/2019 20:29

"Proud of southgates lions tonight"
a phrase that is not used anywhere near as much as the word lionesses in fact ive never heard them referred to as lions ive heard of the team being called the three lions but then why are the women not called the three lionesses
Oh ffs are you one of the professionally offended? please quote where i said i was offended.

Krazykitty · 02/07/2019 20:29

Think you’ll have to admit YABU OP.

94% so far think you are. I just don’t get how you can think lionesses is sexist Confused

AnyFucker · 02/07/2019 20:30

Do come on, op

Have a beer, watch the game.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 02/07/2019 20:31

Three lions on our shirt....

It’s got a whole song about it!

howwudufeel · 02/07/2019 20:31

I think lionesses are incredible animals. The fact we refer to the women’s team as the lionesses is very apt.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/07/2019 20:31

Three lions isn’t used in the same way at all. No one says “the 3 lions are playing tonight”

Yep they do here you go op and pass examples of the media using the term three lions in exactly the same way

22Giraffes · 02/07/2019 20:32

Time to give up OP, you are finding an issue where there isn't one and your arguments are getting silly now. 100000% YABU Hmm

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/07/2019 20:32

Proud of southgates lions tonight"
a phrase that is not used anywhere near as much

Yes it is and way further back i remember it being the 3 lions back in 1996

Justanotherlurker · 02/07/2019 20:33

or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions

Shows how much you are interested in football and not just trying to start an outrage IDPOL thread, if you where consistent in your outrage then you would already know that the male football team are consistently referenced as lions, even in the guardian.

Buddytheelf85 · 02/07/2019 20:33

I actually love it because lionesses are awesome animals (way better than lions, who are pretty much pointless).

Also the men’s team do get referred to as ‘lions’. All the time.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/07/2019 20:33

Because its not three lioness on a shirt they still wear three lions

marvellousnightforamooncup · 02/07/2019 20:33

England men aren't called called lions. There were the Lisbon Lions (Celtic) but not the England Lions. England women should just be England women.

Littlechocola · 02/07/2019 20:36

They don’t have a song (I don’t think. Not a sport fan) so maybe it IS sexist?

I would love to be referred to as a lioness but think I’m probably more of a sloth.
