or at least its odd as we dont call the men lions we call them england we should call the women England but also adding an ess to a noun an be considered sexist by many. it has just struck me as odd.

There were some puctures pass of the press refering to the england mens team as the three lions in the same way as they call the womens team the lionesses i'll try again

to be fair no one refers to England men's team as 'three lions' no one!

I like it. But even if you don't - women's football is finally being shown on mainstream TV channels at peak times and being given media attention. This is all a massive improvement- why pick out a small niggle like the nickname when there is so much to celebrate, and it should only keep getting better.

What revisionist stuff is this, there is a reason why one of the anthems is three lions and why its become a situation where its lionesses when its reporting about the england national team lion, in reference to the 3 lions it is often used in commentary even in the guardian

I think the 3 lions name for the men has come about because of the song not the other way round. I don’t recall any mention of 3 lions until the song came out in 1996.

Yes but when talking about the Male players they aren’t constantly referred to as the “lions”. I work in journalism and when the World Cup was on I didn’t once see the Male players referred to as “lions”, whereas every broadcaster is calling the female players “lionesses”.

Just because it’s said in one song 20 years ago doesn’t mean people still use it. It’s patronising.

If there is a well-established team already then an alternative team will be known by an alternative name for example, a youth team. If there were to be a men's netball team then no doubt they would be called the men's team. It's not about the default always being male. It depends which is the longest-established team surely? It's called women's and men's tennis, women's/men's 400 metres, etc. The male England football team was already established and well known as just 'the England team' before the women's team existed. It's not sexist.
