Period due on my wedding day FFS!

Has anyone ever taken Norethisterone before to delay their period? Did it work? Did you have any awful side effects?

I've just realised that I'm due on my period on my bloody wedding day!!

They are usually heavy too so I can't be doing with the stress of it on that day.

WIBU to consider taking period delay tablets to stop this and ask if there's anyone here who has?

Alternatively did anyone manage their period on their wedding day and how did you go? The thought of a heavy period in a white dress is making me nauseous.

I take it your not on the pill? If you were than obviously just stop taking pills early to have period beforehand (using condoms).Northisterone gave me bad side effects like pp described.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 02/07/2019 10:59

I took Northisterone for about a month so I could take my A-Levels without risking curling up on the floor in agony in the sports hall and extended it to cover a holiday immediately after. I didn't have regular periods, they'd just turn up every few months and floor me. The next period came the following month and was the one that had me sobbing on the filthy stockroom floor at work before the manager came to look for me.

At the time it worked very well and it was reassuring that I didn't have to fear my menstral "cycle" ruining the outcome of two years of study.

Bluerussian · 02/07/2019 10:59

If you are on the pill you can take it without a break and you won't have a period. It will do no harm because 'pill periods' aren't real periods anyway. Lots of people do that, it's called taking it 'back to back'. I did it myself occasionally (not on pill now, past all that :-) ). If you're not on the pill, talk to your doctor who may suggest something and you can explore options.

stucknoue · 02/07/2019 11:02

How long to your wedding - can you take it the month before to alter your cycle by 2 weeks? I've taken it and it was fine but I don't get symptoms anyway from periods

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 02/07/2019 11:03

I took it when I was trying to delay AF for IVF treatment and it worked well.

FuckOffPeriod · 02/07/2019 11:09

No I'm not on the pill and don't want to start them due to fertility treatment coming up after the wedding.

I've taken this on a regular basis as many a holiday coincided with a period. Your period should arrive three days after the last tablet.

Once it failed - I started on a beach FFS and had to use one of those wretched Turkish loos - unpleasant at the best of times.

Obviously you'll be sensible enough to wear a mini-towel 'just in case' and have proper sanpro stashed away in a friend's bag if the inevitable happens. Enjoy your day.

FuckOffPeriod · 02/07/2019 11:13

Yes definitely. I think I'll wear cycling shorts under my dress too just in case ha.

if you delay this next period will it knock the next one back the same amount of days as well? Can't remember if it does that?

My GP said it didn't work like that when I asked him. From experience I'm sure that is does though - odd.

Anyway, I've taken it loads for holidays and have had no side effects at all (touch wood). I always end up with some left over tablets too which mean i can delay it at random times in the year if it's inconvenient.

tisonlymeagain · 02/07/2019 11:21

I've used Northisterone several times - had no side effects.

Wynturphelle · 02/07/2019 11:22

I've taken Provers (medroxyprogesterone) to delay a couple of periods. It was fine when I just wanted to push it back a few days (started taking it three days before date due on) and I had no bloating or heavy period as a result. Period came the day after I stopped the morning dose.

However, it was awful when I tried to take it to push back for a week. I was absolutely raging at any little thing. Still no bloating but the rage issues were awful.

ILikeYouToo · 02/07/2019 11:26

I've tried it twice and it's knocked on my cycle like others have said, so if you can get it this month, that's a great idea. Order it asap though - I did it through boots private prescription (seemed overkill to go through docs and appts are hard to get), and it took a few days. You have to start taking it 3 days before you're due.
The only side effect I got was bad dizziness. It seems unusual, and no one else I know has had it, but happened both times - bad rooms spins when I lay down. Did coincide with travelling (plane and boat) so maybe it was that, but I don't usually get it.

Newschapter · 02/07/2019 11:26

Does a doctor prescribe this or can it be bought OTC at chemists?

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 02/07/2019 11:26

I'm queen of the period turning up at every important occasion- holidays, wedding, honeymoon. I agree with delaying the month before and hoping that works. You could take ibuprofen full dose for 3 days before your period is meant to start as it lessens the flow by 50% at least. I couldn't do with the tranexamic acid and was told this by a gynae and it works. I've also discovered the sheer joy of period pants. Those modibodi knickers are amazing and they do quite fancy ones- just as a back up.

DifficultSituation19 · 02/07/2019 11:28

I’ve taken it a few times and each time it’s given me PMT a million times worse than usual, and makes me have the skin of a very spotty teenager. I’d never take it again. Being that hormonal mixed with wedding nerves and stress would = a few murders probably if it was me.

FuckOffPeriod · 02/07/2019 11:30

Newschapter, it's prescription only but you can get it from pharmacies like boots etc... Without having to go to the GP.

I know some said it didn't cause them any effects, and didn't while I was taking it (delayed my period while on holiday as didn't want v heavy period while in Florida in summer!) but the period I got when I stopped taking it - heavier, and really painful. Worse than normal. Obviously short lived and had no impact on my cycle, I only delayed it by about a week and my cycle returned to normal.

shazkiwi · 02/07/2019 11:42

My period turned up 30 minutes after I got married ! I forgot I was due on. Complete nightmare - I had to borrow pads from a guest & really struggled with petticoat & big dress in the loo.

Deuxcaggages · 02/07/2019 11:44

I've taken it for a holiday. It stopped the period, but still had the PMT. Could you not just get on the regular pill leading upto wedding and stop after it . I don't see how taking Northisterone is any different to taking regular pill, you're still messing with your hormones if you're considering fertility treatment.

haflump · 02/07/2019 11:44

I was also due my period on my wedding day and started taking it 2 days before my wedding and stopped it 2 days after my wedding. Meant I had quite a heavy period with huge clots afterwards but I’d much rather that on my honeymoon than on my wedding day in a white dress! There was no problems at all and it works well. I’ve also taken it for holidays a few times (or taken the pill for a few days only) and had no problems.

FuckOffPeriod · 02/07/2019 11:49

I don't want to take anything for a continued length of time so don't want to be on the pill now for the next two months. If I were going to take the period delay tablets I'd stop taking them the day after the wedding so only a few days of taking them in comparison to months on the pill.

I really don't want to take a hormonal contraceptive for any extended length of time.

SoupDragon · 02/07/2019 11:51

In that case i would go to your GP and explain, asking whether delaying this period will delay the one after in line with the "new" cycle. If it does, better to have any symptoms at home!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 02/07/2019 11:52

I had very heavy periods (so heavy in fact that I'm currently recovering from a hysterectomy) and have taken norethisterone a few times over the years. I found it resets your cycle so if e.g you're normally due on the 1st of the month and delay it till the 10th your next period will be 4 weeks after the 10th. No side effects for me other than my next period being slightly heavier. You take it 3 times a day so I used to set a recurring reminder on my phone.

Good luck and congratulations!

QueenofallIsee · 02/07/2019 11:53

No ‘side effects’ in terms of my well being for me, but it buggered up my cycle for almost 6mths! I could set my watch by my period from the age of 12 so that was a shock as enough for me to think I’ll just put up with it. That said, 3 days light flow here so not a massive deal

Sosayi · 02/07/2019 11:54

I take it quiet a lot and I find I don’t get moody or irritable but when I didn’t take it my period moods were awful
As soon as I don’t take it I get a period within 2/3 days and then a normal one 28 days or so later
