It's an 11 year old (born male) ice skater. There's a little video where to me she looks female.

I daren't put this on the feminism board, but AIBU to think that in 20 years time we will look back in shame at how we have treated transgendered individuals?

I just put myself in those shoes for 5 hours. What on earth would I think? How much hate would I feel? How fucked up/strange/weird would I feel?

I have a very uneasy feeling in my soul about the vociferous opposition to transgenderism on MN currently. It doesn't sit comfortably with me.

I came across this story just now and it's typical of I suppose what the feminist MNers want transgender people to face. I.e. that they can't...

Should she compete as a girl? Or AIBU?

YABU sport should be separated by sex not gender.

GnomeDePlume · 02/07/2019 06:11

There is so much opportunity for abuse if we go down the route of allowing people to compete in sports in the gender of their (or their coaches/parents) choosing. This especially if the competitor is forced to take hormones to fit into the chosen category.

To me this is little different from the arguments around drug taking generally in sport.

Sport is big business from a very early age. There is little to stop an unscrupulous coach who finds a potential star then gives them 'supplements' to make them fit the appropriate category.

Unscupulous coaches dont have the long term interest of the athlete at heart. They see the opportunity for their own career progression.

Supersimpkin · 02/07/2019 06:11

In 20 years' time? Little Maria will be crippled by osteoporosis from the massive injections of female hormones. No more sports for this kid.

The Rosa Parks analogy is racism of the highest order - OP, you're skating on very thin ice.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/07/2019 06:18

And yet again looking pretty means someone is a woman.

teyem · 02/07/2019 06:19

Facts > Hurt feelings

StealthPolarBear · 02/07/2019 06:21

*Saltystraw

I feel for anyone that faces these challenges in life but the fact is there are differences between genders that go further then how you feel in your mind.. they could tell the gender of my unborn child at 10weeks from DNA.. we need to seperate the term gender and use another word for how we identify. *
We have one. What they saw at ten weeks was the sex. Gender is what the op is talking about.

Op do you have any biologically female daughters?

StealthPolarBear · 02/07/2019 06:22

Women need to be nice, and let men walk all over them. Unless your a trans man, in which case join the women in being walked all over.

StealthPolarBear · 02/07/2019 06:22

The child could always take up horse riding instead.

colourlessgreenidea · 02/07/2019 06:32

As I said, I accept that YOU think IABU, but I really don't think that I am.

Are you able to put forward a reasoned and factually supported argument as to why sex-based differences in sport should be disregarded to the detriment of those born with female physiology, and to the advantage of a small section of those with male physiology?

VivienneHolt · 02/07/2019 06:32

Yanbu at all, but mumsnet is a very transphobic site and you’re going to ruffle some feathers with this Flowers

Bezalelle · 02/07/2019 06:34

Vivienne, it's really not. Any genuine transphobia is clamped down upon pretty hard by MNHQ. What you're seeing is fear for women's rights.

bangs head against wall

megletthesecond · 02/07/2019 06:34

No. Being a woman isn't a feeling, outfit or activity.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/07/2019 06:35

He has a penis. He’s male.

JoyceJeffries · 02/07/2019 06:35

They can compete with all the other male bodied individuals. No one is stopping them.

Why should women constantly lose out so as not to upset others? Fuck that shit.

81Byerley · 02/07/2019 06:36

I can see the point of view that an adult person born male will have advantages over other female contestants, but I share your views, OP. I have a beautiful 5 year old Granddaughter, born male, but who is insistent that she is female. In fact I can no longer think of her as male. I'm hoping that the recent changes in a lot of peoples attitude towards transgender people, particularly amongst our young people, will mean that her future will be happier than it would have been had she been born when I was.

stucknoue · 02/07/2019 06:36

The problem is that we split sports (well most) for a reason, men have a significant advantage, the exact percentage varies by sport but 15% is common just because of testosterone. Once suppressed this advantage does reduce but not to zero because xx chromosomes produce a taller narrower hipped frame. At age 11 there's no advantage in ice skating, but where do you draw a line - watch the documentary currently on iPlayer for a good non sensationalist review of the facts. I think we actually need an extra category of sports people to be completely fair - watching trans us high school athletes beating others by huge margins and getting lucrative college scholarships is just wrong, biological advantage that's why we have separate sports for women.

XXVaginaAndAUterus · 02/07/2019 06:37

I can understand why you feel as you do, OP. I want that kid to be happy and well and safe, too. The thing is, I want the girls around him to be happy and well and safe too. Equal rights for everybody. The reason why sport is sex segregated is to try to allow it to be on a biologically level playing field - allowing the occasional biologically male person to compete in the women's section means it is no longer a level playing field.

Oblomov19 · 02/07/2019 06:39

I don't think MN is transphobic at all.

Ascreed · 02/07/2019 06:40

I have a beautiful 5 year old Granddaughter, born male, but who is insistent that she is female.

Geniunly what does that mean in the context of a five year old? They like traditionally girls toys/clothes or?

StealthPolarBear · 02/07/2019 06:41

81Byerley a five year old?! What exactly makes her feel 'like a girl'.
Do the drugs and potential surgery not worry you?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 02/07/2019 06:41

If one child is told she can't compete, that possibly is the end of the world.

But that child can compete, in their biological sex category.

BoneyBackJefferson · 02/07/2019 06:41

I can't read any more of this shite.
