Following on from this -it was just getting interesting. Someone posted about how Meghan called herself a feminist but hadn’t earned the title. I was interested to know how you earned the title- but the thread ended.

It didn't come across as snobby to say Ashley Cole might not share her interests. Your comment did.

Sorry if it's not what you intended.

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 22:35

But reality is, the royal family is only important to a handful and Meghan Markle might be the only reason the Americans are talking about him right now

Well, actually I don’t think that is quite the case - American press are pretty obsessed with the RF although no member has come close to the level of obsession they had with Diana. I lived in the States during the Diana years and the column inches she occupied was staggering, more so because she wasn’t American. That said, I think it’s fair to say that that is the case all over the world, UK included. The level of interest in Diana was insane and hopefully never to be repeated.

PineappleFwitters · 08/07/2019 22:35

So this is where you all got to!

I thought it was an open secret that Ashley Cole isn't exactly what you'd call a ladies man...

IABUQueen · 08/07/2019 22:36

No to be honest my British husband and American cousins were in fact very “meh” about the royal family. They knew there was a lot of royalists who gush over them but no they didn’t and don’t see a big deal and if I brought up conversations about their newborn they would look at me like I’m some celebrity gossip who has a boring life...

So yeh, not everyone gets the fuss.. I know a lot of people who actually “became” interested BECAUSE of the Meghan Markle phenomena... including me, my husband and American cousins. Simply because it was modernising what to us was a boringly privileged institute. Something that reflects this century a bit better.

findingmyfeet12 · 08/07/2019 22:38

The American press might well be obsessed with the royals but that doesn't mean that they have insider info about what these people are like or know more than we do about them.

MM as an actress would have known not to believe most of what she read about them in the media.

IABUQueen · 08/07/2019 22:39

DidItAgain

Yes Diana obviously is the reason why the royal family became interesting to the rest of the world. Her personality and quirkiness and tragic death made global news.. And her choices of boyfriends which made her relatable and a bit ... eerrrr.. diverse ??

Meghan revived that.

But the day to day of the other royals is quite boring actually. Not many people care.

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 22:41

What? You must be joking. It was in response to a pp suggesting a footballer wouldn't have anything to talk about to a privately educated 'feminist'

That’s not really what I said or meant. It was a tongue in cheek response to a pp who suggested that Meghan was being disingenuous because she had turned Ashley down because of his reputation.

If I was looking to meet a man to settle down, in MMs position I'd turn down Ashley Cole too.

She probably didn't want to waste time on a relationship that didn't sound great on paper. Nothing wrong with that.

GlitchStitch · 08/07/2019 22:47

Of course there is nothing wrong with turning down Ashley Cole, most sensible women would! I was just saying how likely is it that an American actress would know all about an English footballer but nothing about an English prince?

findingmyfeet12 · 08/07/2019 22:58

Ashley had a reputation. H was a very eligible batchelor. Just because he didn't have a similar reputation to Ashley, doesn't mean she knew much else about his personality until she met him! She was a small time actress, why would she know about H's personality?

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 23:06

She was a small time actress, why would she know about H's personality

Quite. Small time actress or not, how could she know anything about Harry’s personality until she actually met him? Even asking the mutual friends who introduced them wouldn’t be much use other than “oh he’s such a great guy etc” I mean of course they’re going to say that - they’re the ones setting H&M up. How doesn’t anyone know anything about anyone until they actually meet and get to know them? Maybe she doesn’t really know him very well even now, it’s only been a 3 years since they met, much of the first 2 years spent in a LDR. I certainly know that it took a lot longer than 3 years to realise that my ex was a bit of a twat and that we went together like a scooter in a swimming pool.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/07/2019 23:07

I thought Ashley Cole contacted her on SM fanboy style. Then she met with the Daily Mail journalist about raising her profile and took the opportunity to enquire: "There's this bloke called Ashley Cole and he's been attempting to woo me online, he says he's a footballer, should I respond? As in, 'Is he eligible?'

And the DM journo rather charitably told her to "Avoid and run for the hills"

So as fate would have it the Daily Mail played a hand in Meghan ending up with Harry.Grin

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2019 23:14

BertrandRussell

i’ll justn leave this here, shall I?

If you want to, do.

Why?

Smokeonthewater · 08/07/2019 23:18

I’m really astonished at the comments made about Kate ‘making’ William marry her. Also Meghan chasing and somehow trapping Harry. The assumption being that men (or just Royal men?) are poor little lambs being ensnared by scheming witches. Are we in 2019 here or 1842? Are grown women really peddling this misogynistic claptrap on a public forum?
These claims that Carol schooled her daughter in how to catch William (like a bear in a pit!!). What’s the evidence there or is it more spiteful tabloid fodder being regurgitated?

I do not believe for a moment that Meghan didn’t know who Harry was and wasn’t star struck. However, he has a mind of his own and decided he loved her.

Do people REALLY believe Carol said to Kate ‘you must apply to St Andrews to read Art History because that’s what PW is studying. Make sure you wear a sexy number at a fashion show and knock him dead’. What absolute insulting crap.

The insinuation that she herself inveigled her own husband through trickery is just jaw droppingly crass. This is the sort of brainless shite men have used against women for centuries to diminish us. Why would any modern women buy into and perpetrate this women hating nonsense. It’s shameful.

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 23:25

@Smokeonthewater

If you’re referring to my post, it was actually poking fun at exactly the points you’re making. Of course it’s ridiculous and frankly insulting to both parties. Sorry if my intention wasn’t clear enough.

Truly well said..

The American press might well be obsessed with the royals but that doesn't mean that they have insider info about what these people are like or know more than we do about them

But surely that can't be right? Just in the last year I've seen:

Queen to abdicate (again)
Philip's dead but it's being hushed up
Kate plots to snatch Queen's crown
Charles and Camilla to divorce
Kate's pregnant with twins

Admittedly these were in checkout rags, but you can't really mean they're making it up can you??!!! Shock Wink

You mean this post, I think:

Anyway - you can’t make someone marry you!

Not true! Apparently you absolutely can make someone marry you. Kate made William and Meghan made Harry. Fact!

Even I could see that was a joke.

And I'm rubbish at spotting jokes Wink

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 23:37

@Puzzledandpissedoff

You’ve broken my innocence. How could you?! Not felt this way since I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus....

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/07/2019 23:40

You’ve broken my innocence. How could you?!

Good job, then, that I didn't mention the one about William plotting to "off" his dad so he could have the throne next Grin

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 23:41

😂

DidItAgainOops · 08/07/2019 23:43

Well, tbf, I reckon Wills is a bit of a dark horse...

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/07/2019 23:52

No it's possible for a woman to be scheming without also being a witch. Why is witch always used as a slur? The two are often mutually exclusive.
