Would this put you off buying a house

We live in a standard 3 bed semi detached 1930s house.

We’re already having a bit of work done to the electrics/ loft this summer.

I think while we’re having it done we should get minimal/ low profile white ceiling fans fitted in the bedrooms, at quite minimal cost. I’m originally from a hot country and all homes have them. I know they’re uncommon in the UK, but we’re in the south and every summer since I’ve lived here (2010) we’ve had to drag our flimsy pedestal fans which don’t provide as strong/ evenly distributed air and break down constantly.

DH thinks they’ll look silly and out of place and will put off potential buyers.

AIBU to want ceiling fans?

Don't get ceiling fans, they are seen as tacky and so '80s.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 29/06/2019 23:44

I'd be delighted if I went to view a house and there was a ceiling fan! Hate trying to sleep in hot weather and love a nice breeze.

Are you planning to sell the house soon? To have the fans or not is really only relevant if youre planning on moving- if youre staying, why wouldnt you have the comfort of the fans and enjoy them? Its your home to live in and enjoy.

NinjaInFluffyPJs · 29/06/2019 23:44

Do they install same way as normal ceiling lights? If yes you could easily switch them in case of sale.
I would find it odd in UK😂But it wouldn't put me off if it's easy fix

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/06/2019 23:44

I've only ever seen ceiling fans in Florida where they are integrated with a central ceiling light so I would assume it wouldn't be a big job to change a fan /light combo to a conventional pendant light fitting.
So yes, get them.

Yours truly, sweating like a pig, Squiffany

BettaSplenden · 29/06/2019 23:46

Yes they're ugly and very dated but it wouldn't put me off. I'm about to have some put in my house because I cannot cope with he heat either and they're less invasive/noisy then the pedestal or tower fans.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 29/06/2019 23:47

I love a ceiling fan! I don’t know why anyone objects to them Grin

My parents had them in their dining room and living room and I was gutted when they got rid of them!

newmomof1 · 29/06/2019 23:48

We have a ceiling fan in our conservatory but it's SO loud!

notangelinajolie · 29/06/2019 23:50

Ceiling fans are a good thing to have in a hot country but a bit naff in the UK. Have them put in if you want them but they won't be a selling point and expect people to knock down the price when you come to sell.

REllenR · 29/06/2019 23:50

We are getting one put in all the bedrooms. They get so warm in the summer.

TooManyPaws · 29/06/2019 23:51

I grew up with them being the norm until we moved house and - gasp! - had central air conditioning.

madcatladyforever · 29/06/2019 23:54

I do whateve I want in my house regardless of whether I want to sell or not, it's my home.
Have ceiling fans if you want them.
My house is painted all kinds of colours and currently looks like the witchcraft museum.
It certainly didn't put any buyers off I sold it within two weeks recently.
Everyone said paint the place in neutral colours and paint over the ceiling stars or you'll never sell but all of the people who made offers loved my house.

Hate ceiling fans. Awful things. Put in a/c if you have to but fans, nope!

Queenie8 · 29/06/2019 23:58

Rather than ceiling fans, install hotel quality quiet air conditioning wall units in the loft conversion at least.

k1233 · 29/06/2019 23:58

In Australia, so bit of a difference Smile but I have ceiling fans in all rooms. In our hot summers I only need the aircon on for a week or two out of the whole year. Definitely preferable to pedestal fans, which are unsightly and get in the way.

MrsEricBana · 29/06/2019 23:59

I'd say don't do it as needed so rarely and would prob put buyers off. Sorry!

starzig · 30/06/2019 00:01

Air conditioning would be much better

Violet25 · 30/06/2019 00:02

I love these!!! Thank you for the link.

k1233 · 30/06/2019 00:02

Ceiling fans are significantly more economical to run than aircon. My aircon goes on once it hits 30 inside. Up to then ceiling fans are perfect.

It's funny, when it's hot, instead of coming outside to help hang out the washing etc, the dogs supervise by putting their heads through the dog door Grin

ToastyFingers · 30/06/2019 00:03

It would put me off sorry, I wouldn't mind if the rest of the house needed work doing anyway, but id want to take them out.

Gillian1980 · 30/06/2019 00:05

I’d bloody love it, it’d make a house more appealing to me.

But I am always overheating and love sitting in front of fans so I may not have a balanced view.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 30/06/2019 00:06

YANBU To WANT them but you’d be a bit daft to get them

I think if there are enough’littlebthungs’ like that then it makes people feeel ‘there’s a lot needs doing’ When they move in

This place had a ceiling fan in the MB and a fucking awful brass pull vurtisin rail thungbin the lounge - both came out on day 1

JaimeBronde · 30/06/2019 00:10

My friend has them & they really do help the air cool down.

BitOfFun · 30/06/2019 00:12

I can't think why they would put buyers off. It's hardly a big job to remove them if you wanted to.

BitOfFun · 30/06/2019 00:15

They'd be a plus point for me. I'd fall asleep dreaming of Indiana Jones Grin.
