Would this put you off buying a house

We live in a standard 3 bed semi detached 1930s house.

We’re already having a bit of work done to the electrics/ loft this summer.

I think while we’re having it done we should get minimal/ low profile white ceiling fans fitted in the bedrooms, at quite minimal cost. I’m originally from a hot country and all homes have them. I know they’re uncommon in the UK, but we’re in the south and every summer since I’ve lived here (2010) we’ve had to drag our flimsy pedestal fans which don’t provide as strong/ evenly distributed air and break down constantly.

DH thinks they’ll look silly and out of place and will put off potential buyers.

AIBU to want ceiling fans?

Sorry, I don’t think I was clear, we’re not planning to sell anytime soon, in fact we just moved in. DH just generally doesn’t like doing any improvements which could diminish the value of the property, and I get his reasoning, so I think he’s thinking of a few years down the line. Maybe I could get quotes for removal as well as installation, so we replace them when it comes to selling (in like 10 years)

I honestly think once you've lived with one you wouldn't be without it, and weather is only going to get more extreme.

Unfortunately I think you’re right about the weather

portable plug in ones aren't great.

Agreed, they don’t work as well, and they seem to break easily which really annoys me as I hate buying things and sending them to the landfill

We have them in the bedrooms as house gets mega warm in summer. Quite a modern style though, black and chrome thing matching the décor. As long as not those old style brown ones with the mesh in, it'll be fine

I would love it. We have so many tower fans

SensationsThaisweetchilli · 30/06/2019 22:45

This is just me personally, I don’t think I could justify the environmental impact of AC, but fans are still not exactly environmentally conscious so it’s just a personal choice

Thank you for all the messages, sorry I haven’t managed to reply to all of them.

If nothing else, I’ll go into my next discussion with DH armed with that 59% vote in favour of fans :)

Do what you want to your house to make it more comfortable for you now...not some potential buyers maybe years down the line.

We have a ceiling fan in the bedroom...it's a godsend and the base of it takes up little room so you could switch it out if you came to sell

Are you planning on selling soon ? I think your Dh is being silly to plan you life round potential buyers over something that is so easy to change

Oldraver · 30/06/2019 22:54

Sorry just seen you're not planning to move soon..tell DH he's an idiot.

A ceiling fan is no more complicate than any other light fitting

EekThreek · 30/06/2019 22:56

Until recently I'd have said a big fat nope to ceiling fans. But then we moved into a (rental) house that has one in the main bedroom and I'm completely converted. My only problem is that when it gets unbalanced it's noisy, but a quick poke to readjust and it's fine again (for 10 mins).

zwellers · 30/06/2019 23:01

Would totally put me off. I would think they were installed because of something wrong with heating or insulation. Plus the work need to remove them and repaint/plaster etc. I would also think you were wierd for having them.

OhNoooNotAgain · 30/06/2019 23:54

But there's no work needed @zwellers - they literally fit where the light fitting is

Floofboopsnootandbork · 01/07/2019 00:20

Plus the work need to remove them

It takes less than 5 minutes Hmm

breakfastpizza · 01/07/2019 00:33

Very common across the US and Canada now. Catch up, UK!

TildaTurnip · 01/07/2019 00:34

It wouldn’t put me off. I think I’d be slightly more pleased they we’re there than not. I think we will be getting more used to seeing them.

Even if I hated them it wouldn’t put me off! That’s like saying a house having wall lights would put you off buying it or a house having a dado rail. They’re not permanent or expensive things to change.

Bluerussian · 01/07/2019 18:27

Agree with you, Tilda Turnip. They're great (if they work), I really wish we had them and expect we will have eventually. I wouldn't understand someone put off buying a house because of fans - if they don't like the look of them they can remove them easily enough. In any case, new buyers usually alter things at least a bit.

bumblingbovine49 · 01/07/2019 18:56

Just put them in. When you come to sell, have them taken out.

It is your house. Have what you want!!!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 01/07/2019 19:05

Have your house how you want it for living, not for a potential buyer in 10+ years time. Crazy to compromise on your living arrangement for 10 years!

You can always factor in the cost of removing them when deciding if you want to buy them.

DorisDances · 01/07/2019 19:17

Wouldn't put me off buyi g nut they absolutely would be ripped out when we moved in. All they do is move warm air around and generally make a noise- not therefore effective and very dated I'm afraid. However, your houae so your call

SciFiScream · 01/07/2019 19:24

Silly question but I assume you have clearance? Love the idea of fans, but our reality is that I can touch the ceiling when I stretch my arms and on my tiptoes. DH is 6'4" - we can't have pendant lights as he walks into them. Fans would be similar.
