Would this put you off buying a house

We live in a standard 3 bed semi detached 1930s house.

We’re already having a bit of work done to the electrics/ loft this summer.

I think while we’re having it done we should get minimal/ low profile white ceiling fans fitted in the bedrooms, at quite minimal cost. I’m originally from a hot country and all homes have them. I know they’re uncommon in the UK, but we’re in the south and every summer since I’ve lived here (2010) we’ve had to drag our flimsy pedestal fans which don’t provide as strong/ evenly distributed air and break down constantly.

DH thinks they’ll look silly and out of place and will put off potential buyers.

AIBU to want ceiling fans?

Forgot to add that it wouldn't put me off buying a house with them!

KeepCoolCalmAndCollected · 30/06/2019 09:34

I think they look very out of place and quite tacky in the UK, but definitely right/correct in hot countries.
It wouldn't put me off buying a house, but one of the first jobs I would get my DH to do would be to take them out and Ebay them 😁.

QuitMoaning · 30/06/2019 10:33

My OH wanted them when we moved into our house 9 years ago. I didn’t but I decided to go with it. They are sleek modern things and look ok but we have them on most nights in the Summer and they are epic.
They do not push warm air around, they do create cool air and we sleep so easily with them.
They might look tacky but they are in our bedroom and it is our private space so no one goes in there and quite frankly I don’t care, they are sooo cooling. One of our best decisions ever and I don’t care what others think.

HopelessLayout · 30/06/2019 10:35

I love ceiling fans. If people don't want them they can just remove them when they buy the property?

fancynancyclancy · 30/06/2019 10:53

I never understand why simple fixtures & certain paint colours puts people off buying a house. They are very easy to fix!

lljkk · 30/06/2019 11:08

I need a pic to decide.. that said, I grew up with ceiling fans & they were just noisy stirrers of hot air in my experience. I pretty much loathe all fans.

lljkk · 30/06/2019 11:09

ps: would not put me off. Can just remove & replace. I don't expect to keep your decour.

Rockbird · 30/06/2019 11:17

I'd absolutely love it if a potential house had fans. BeyondMyWits that one is lovely.

AlexaAmbidextra · 30/06/2019 11:39

Can't you just open a window?

On a hot day with no breeze? How on earth would that help cool down a house?

BeyondMyWits · 30/06/2019 12:01

What gets me on here is the "tacky" comments - really? all of them?

The wooden, the white, the coloured whatever-the-heck-you-like, the propeller, the sycamore, the multifans, the fixed blade, the moveable, the retractable, remote controlled - all of them?

We have moved way past the rattan, massive bladed, beige with an orange tint, pull cord, single speed ones that were from the dim and dingy 70s. Wayyyyyyyy past.

OhNoooNotAgain · 30/06/2019 12:10

It's one of the things I'm disappointed about in the new house we're buying... No, not that it has them, but that it doesn't! I've lived in houses with them fitted for years, couldn't cope without it in my room.

So we're getting Aircon fitted instead Grin

MyOpinionIsValid · 30/06/2019 12:12

Ceiling fans are quite common place down herein the south, cant legislate for the rest of the country. TBH they're just a light fitting so I cant see why he thinks they'd put people off

katewhinesalot · 30/06/2019 12:14

They don't look nice.

simplyhaving · 30/06/2019 12:17

When are you planning to sell?

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/06/2019 12:17

It would never stop me buying a house, some of the more moderns ones look lovely.

LoafofSellotape · 30/06/2019 12:19

Surely you don't nit buy a house because it has fans you don't like?! That's like saying you don't like a light fitting,it can just be changed.

Tibbycat · 30/06/2019 12:21

They wouldn't be for me. In fact, we used to live on the sea front on the South coast and the house got very hot. When we moved in, there was a ceiling fan in the bedroom. It was one of the first things to go. Saying that, my family live in Malaysia and have built in AC and fans in every room. They seem fitting when it's 26°c every night and they're really quite nice, modern ones. I think I just don't associate them with the UK.

Tibbycat · 30/06/2019 12:22

I should add. We just put AC in instead, works a treat and looks better. We hid the outside box on a wall that isn't really viewed from outside. Could be an option.

bellabasset · 30/06/2019 12:23

I have a double glazed house with 2' thick walls so I don't need them. Have what you want and take them with you when you sell.

exLtEveDallas · 30/06/2019 13:11

it ruins the look of the room. Its strange you cant see that

Nope, still don't get it. A white fan against a white ceiling - how on earth does that ruin the look of the room?

My bedroom is where I read, sleep and have sex. If I was staring at the ceiling during any of those functions I'd be doing it wrong!

OralBElectricToothbrush · 30/06/2019 17:38

How much does it cost to get central A/C installed in a home, especially a period one with masonry walls so there would be some serious issues with getting aircon ducts in? Or do you just have those units that fit to the wall? With electricity being so expensive here I cannot imagine getting A/C and running it would be cheaper than ceiling fans. Anyone know how much it costs? We have a portable A/C unit for our bedroom in the UK and it was about £300 to buy but it does cost a lot to run. I'm currently in N. America in a house with central A/C.

HeronLanyon · 30/06/2019 18:37

Just had a strange thought - of an early Victorian version of mumsnet discussing the new dangled electric ceiling light fittings and how ugly they are and how they ruin the ceiling etc. After candles and gas usually on the wall I’ll bet there was similar aversion?
My strange thought may be due to the heat - wish I had a ceiling fan Grin

HeronLanyon · 30/06/2019 18:41

Friend recently had partial a/c installed - 2 rooms only think upstairs bedroom and sitting room. One above the other. all fully fitted etc. came to around 1200 for parts/ducting/work/making good/redecorating. 1930s solid house. First use last night and she said it was life changing re sleep etc.

francienolan · 30/06/2019 18:56

I miss ceiling fans so much--our flat gets really warm even when it's not a crazy hot summer. At least one in the bedroom would actually make me look more favorably on a house I was looking at.

floraloctopus · 30/06/2019 19:57

Don't have a budgie if you have ceiling fans.
