Would this put you off buying a house

We live in a standard 3 bed semi detached 1930s house.

We’re already having a bit of work done to the electrics/ loft this summer.

I think while we’re having it done we should get minimal/ low profile white ceiling fans fitted in the bedrooms, at quite minimal cost. I’m originally from a hot country and all homes have them. I know they’re uncommon in the UK, but we’re in the south and every summer since I’ve lived here (2010) we’ve had to drag our flimsy pedestal fans which don’t provide as strong/ evenly distributed air and break down constantly.

DH thinks they’ll look silly and out of place and will put off potential buyers.

AIBU to want ceiling fans?

I bought a house with ceiling fans, thinking we would remove them - but I actually love them now, so nice and cooling. I go for function over looks every time, but actually they aren't ugly, I just didn't think they would be needed in the UK, and was wrong. (The house is like a greenhouse/suntrap).

TheHobbitMum · 30/06/2019 20:32

OP we have ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom. I wouldn't be without them now, I don't care how they look Grin

Catsick36 · 30/06/2019 20:34

I would buy a house with modern clean new ceiling fans

OneStepSideways · 30/06/2019 20:43

I think they're ugly and out of place in the UK! Better to get air con installed if you're bothered by the heat.

It would put me off a house!

Figgygal · 30/06/2019 20:44

We have a ceiling fan in our bedroom we did In our old house too

It's brushed steel and our light fitting also remote controlled

Dh is always hot i could do without it but don't even notice it's there anymore

Twooter · 30/06/2019 20:46

I thought we were supposed to be trying to use less energy these days?most days in the uk opening a window is perfectly sufficient, rather than paying for fans to be working all night

ControversialFerret · 30/06/2019 21:10

I love ceiling fans. I have two in the conservatory and when we get our bedroom done in a couple of years I'll be getting one installed in there.

Twooter our bedroom faces south and has the sun on it constantly.
Even with the blinds shut for the whole day it's roasting in there even with the windows open - because there was no breeze at all.

LoafofSellotape · 30/06/2019 21:12

If you do decide to have them put on OP then get remote control ones , I wish we had. We play the " it's your turn to get up" when it's time to turn it off at bedtime 😂

ChicCroissant · 30/06/2019 21:22

It would be a no from me as well OP, although we have floor-standing fans in the heat I don't like the air blowing directly at me so something right over the bed would be awful for me. I don't even have a floor standing fan in our bedroom.

Accountant222 · 30/06/2019 21:40

I had ceiling fans in my last house, horrendously hot upstairs due to dormer and ray burn cooker which ran hot water and heating. They were quite trendy stainless steel ones and looked good, it made a massive difference in a sweltering summer and visitors appreciated them.

CustardOmlet · 30/06/2019 21:45

Reading this thread has made me realise we are missing a ceiling fan in our bedroom, DH and I are very excited about buying one now! We have a very nice one in the conservatory which works amazingly.

Poppyisa · 30/06/2019 21:49

Yes, put them in. I live in a hot climate, that’s fairly cold in winter, and we use it all year.

Would this put you off buying a house
sueelleker · 30/06/2019 21:51

I like the look of the brass and wicker ones-a bit old-fashioned, but lovely.

raspberryk · 30/06/2019 21:55

I think they look awful on the most part and for the cost of the ones that look less old fashioned and invasive you could get air con which actually works.

mathanxiety · 30/06/2019 22:08

The naysayers will all change their minds about ceiling fans when the menopause hits them...

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 30/06/2019 22:13

Just tell any buyer you're taking them with you

gubbsywubbsy · 30/06/2019 22:16

We had one in our old house .. why would they put anyone off? They are easily changed .. literally go in the light socket .

SensationsThaisweetchilli · 30/06/2019 22:20

@BritWifeinUSA those are so cool, I’ve never seen ones like that before

Ceiling fans are significantly more economical to run than aircon. My aircon goes on once it hits 30 inside. Up to then ceiling fans are perfect.

Exactly, I wouldn’t put in air con, I think that would be a bit much

OP posts:
ToPlanZ · 30/06/2019 22:22

I would love ceiling fans! Hate to be too hot. Definitely would not put me off.

Much cheaper to run than aircon. Amazed how many people are saying get aircon. It's miles more environmentally unfriendly too.

SensationsThaisweetchilli · 30/06/2019 22:23

@UnderOverUnderRover same here I grew up with them, so I don’t think they look odd but dH finds them a bit naff, I think?

SensationsThaisweetchilli · 30/06/2019 22:25

@MargaretRiver thank you, I will definitely google them

Livpool · 30/06/2019 22:27

I love ceiling fans

macdhui · 30/06/2019 22:31

Love ceiling fans too - I live in extreme weather conditions and have the reverse fans which might be worth considering as you’re in England as they push the warm air down in winter
