Would this put you off buying a house

We live in a standard 3 bed semi detached 1930s house.

We’re already having a bit of work done to the electrics/ loft this summer.

I think while we’re having it done we should get minimal/ low profile white ceiling fans fitted in the bedrooms, at quite minimal cost. I’m originally from a hot country and all homes have them. I know they’re uncommon in the UK, but we’re in the south and every summer since I’ve lived here (2010) we’ve had to drag our flimsy pedestal fans which don’t provide as strong/ evenly distributed air and break down constantly.

DH thinks they’ll look silly and out of place and will put off potential buyers.

AIBU to want ceiling fans?

It would put me off buying a house to a small degree but I think it would be easy enough to change.

Unless you are thinking of selling next week then do it. It’s your house.

DrVonPatak · 30/06/2019 00:20

They are becoming increasingly necessary with these climate changes, so go ahead, I'd count it as a plus if I was a buyer. There are some sleek ones, quite chic if you do it right.

Squirrelthingsaway · 30/06/2019 00:22

Tbh I would dread having to live in a semi detached house because you can hear the next door doing pretty much anything

azulmariposa · 30/06/2019 00:22

If my ceiling wasn't stupidly low I'd have ceiling fans! We had one in the conservatory and took it out. What a mistake that was!

OralBElectricToothbrush · 30/06/2019 00:23

I'd see it as a plus. Aircon is very expensive to run.

UnderOverUnderRover · 30/06/2019 00:24

I'm from Aus and most houses here have them, I can't understand why a pp would say they look tacky?

Our house in London had one in our bedroom as it got the hottest sun of the day and had a huge window. It was an absolute godsend when it did get too warm in summer.

Definitely do it! I hate the tower fans.

Bluerussian · 30/06/2019 00:25

After last year's hot summer - and we do have a pedestal fan - we vowed to have ceiling fans installed in time for this summer. Guess what? We didn't think any more of it and have been very hot for the past week - especially today! So you go girl.

Bambamber · 30/06/2019 00:26

We have ceiling fans, not the cheap white ones though. They aren't as nice as some lighting you can get, but you can get some quite nice ones. We use the fans the vast majority of the year as I'm pretty much constantly too hot, so get good use out of them. They aren't overly difficult to change over either, so if you was concerned about putting off potential buyers when it comes to selling, you could always swap them for normal lighting.

julensaor · 30/06/2019 00:31

don't bother, most people in the uk would not expect them and if they want them they will install them themselves; much like buying an air conditioning unit if you live in the likes of NYC.

julensaor · 30/06/2019 00:31

Plus I find them extremely ugly.

RainbowMum11 · 30/06/2019 00:32

No, don't do it!
They are massively 80's, we have just a couple of nights each year that are warm (if that, in the UK)..
And fans just circulate the warm air.

LauderSyme · 30/06/2019 00:34

Squirrelthingsaway Wow. I hope you're at least aware of your privilege.

SensationsThai My parents bought a house with ceiling fans so it wouldn't put everyone off. Sometimes (like now!) they are invaluable.

Knitclubchatter · 30/06/2019 00:36

so odd, put them in, take them out, it's just like any other lighting fixture.
great for circulating air when muggy or damp.
great if you can afford a/c but if you don't want to go full on a/c a ceiling fan is fine.

MargaretRiver · 30/06/2019 00:41

You need retractable blade ceiling fans
They look like (and act as) a light when not in use

LoafofSellotape · 30/06/2019 00:41

I have one in the bedroom and it's fabulous, they can easily be taken down when you sell.

PlatypusPie · 30/06/2019 00:58

Why would it put people off buying a house any more than seeing an ordinary light fitting or lampshade that they don’t like? - it isn’t a big job to remove them. We are used to using them when travelling in the various hot parts of the world : I have just had a quick search and think a purchase will be made for at least our bedroom tomorrow !

DrReed · 30/06/2019 01:08

I can't imagine why it would out anyone off buying a house. I'd love one right now.

Expressedways · 30/06/2019 01:12

Don’t they just move around warm air?! Unless you have a/c I think they’re pretty pointless. We have one in our bedroom in the US and it’s good but I wouldn’t want one in the UK. But it’s not exactly hard to replace with a more tasteful light fitting if a future buyer objects.

UnderOverUnderRover · 30/06/2019 01:14

Expressedways surely if you have one then you know when it's on high it gives a pretty cool breeze Confused

DickZillaofTheVilla · 30/06/2019 01:20

They would be a plus for me I’d love them

HappyNOTdriving · 30/06/2019 01:23

I wonder if such a thing as a clear acrylic ceiling fan exist (not googled it) you get all the benefits of having a fan but without the visual annoyance of one.

TantricTwist · 30/06/2019 01:27

Pointless putting them in if they're not actually for you, what a waste of time and money.

Jux · 30/06/2019 01:40

Even if I was unlikely to use them I'd be delighted to have them.

NeckPainChairSearch · 30/06/2019 01:55

Sorry OP, I'd want to rip them straight out. In a bigger space, possibly. In a standard 3 bedroom semi, it's ceiling clutter that wouldn't appeal to me.

Quintella · 30/06/2019 02:01

They wouldn't put me off buying a house (that would be silly) but removing them would be near the top of my To Do list once I'd moved in. There are approximately 15 days in the UK where such a device would be of practical use. The other 350 days they would be an eyesore.
