Prepared to be told I'm being old and boring.
I enjoyed Stormzy's set, he's obviously a progressive liberal guy, and he seems like a good human.
So why the sexist lyrics?
"Finish on her face to top it off (ay)"
"If her friend is a dead ting, take one for the bredren"
"2 peng tings at the entrance" (just feels wrong calling women 'things')
If he was just another artist then fine, but he seems so principled in so many other ways. So I find this odd.

I've no interest in what he's done or where he's from, it's a music festival and that performance was just rubbish.

Pa1oma · 29/06/2019 22:58

It’s not a race issue though Vladimir. There is structiral imbalance in the male female dimension too - obviously. If a man calls a woman a slut, he is being sexist. Theme the rules. It works that way too.

Could you please start a thread about the misogynistic Ed Sheeran lyrics because I don’t know his songs?

Thuglife · 29/06/2019 22:58

@Justanotherlurker
The reality is Stormzy didn’t play Labourfest as he had prior commitments but yeah let’s slag an artist for wanting to be paid for his work, much better narrative Hmm.

Pa1oma · 29/06/2019 23:01

And as for Boris Johnson - er, I don’t think anyone on here hesitates to call him out,

Pa1oma · 29/06/2019 23:03

Anyway, this thread is mental. I’m going to bed.

GreatOne · 29/06/2019 23:04

@StoorieHoose
It's a music festival which is well know for catering for fans of rock indie guitar bands.
Er, Look at the list of previous headliners/main act.....Adele, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams, Sugababes, Tony bennett, Lady Gaga, Shakira, etc etc etc

Wodkavodka · 29/06/2019 23:04

If he's calling any human a 'ting' then he's not ok.

Justanotherlurker · 29/06/2019 23:06

Structural imbalance is the answer there. If a white person chooses to make jokes about a black or other PoC then they are being racist. It is about the power balance. Them's the rules. It works that way.

No it isn't, you are clinging onto IDPOL religion. you are trying to imply the falacy of low expectations and it's insulting as a WOC to see this shite become mainstream

VivienneHolt · 29/06/2019 23:07

It’s not a race issue though Vladimir.

Your absolute insistence on this undermines everything you say in my opinion, because there just isn’t any valid argument that structural racism doesn’t exist in this country. It is inarguably a feature of the way black artists are treated, and you can bury your head in the sand about it if it makes you more comfortable but you must know that in doing so you’re choosing to uphold a racist status quo.

And as for Boris Johnson - er, I don’t think anyone on here hesitates to call him out

And yet he’s likely to be our next PM. Make no mistake, women will vote for BJ despite his explicit sexism.

Could you please start a thread about the misogynistic Ed Sheeran lyrics because I don’t know his songs?

It doesn’t need its own thread. This thread is a totally valid place for a discussion on the misogyny of Ed Sheeran. Why do you think we should keep discussions of his misogyny separate instead of discussing the way he is treated differently to Stormzy on this thread?

VladmirsPoutine · 29/06/2019 23:07

@Pa1oma Goodnight. Hope to catch up with you on another less mental thread.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/06/2019 23:11

@Justanotherlurker Good. If that's how you feel then so be it. I am also a WoC too. You must have drunk too much of the Kool-aid. Ironically you accuse me of 'identity politics' yet you are actually committing the same crime you find so abhorrent. GTF.

@GreatOne You have been ignored on this thread. Are you some sort of promoter?

Pa1oma · 29/06/2019 23:16

Of course there is structural racism Vivienne. Who wouid disputes that? But you can’t use the fact that one inequality exists to justify another! This really is mental. And I am going to bed. And I don’t know Ed Sheerans songs. Nor do I want BJ as PM but there not a lot I can do about that. I don’t want Brexit either, but what can you do?

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 29/06/2019 23:18

Is "Wild Thing" by Steppenwolf (?) a big issue for the people on this thread too?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/06/2019 23:20

What da fuk is wrong with wild thing???

Justanotherlurker · 29/06/2019 23:24

@VladmirsPoutine

Haha, you unironically use the term Kool aid...

I would like to know how I am using IDPOL, its looking like from your previous comment you don't actually know what you are talking about.

However you try and spin it you are trying to spin the fallacy of low expectations

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/06/2019 23:26

Read back your comment slowly and try to understand it. Seriously, I'm not being facetious.
VladmirsPoutine, you are being deliberately obtuse though. I gather that Glastonbury is traditionally an indie rock thing so unless Jay Z has radically changed his style it's not wrong to say that die hard Glastonbury fans might feel he's not what they want to see.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 29/06/2019 23:28

rufus the word "thing" which, if you read the thread, is a massive bone of contention for many on here apparently.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/06/2019 23:30

Oh....

I see

(Still like the song...)

VladmirsPoutine · 29/06/2019 23:44

@WannaSeeHowItEnds YES. I am the one being deliberately obtuse JFC!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/06/2019 23:48

What's JFC?

aPengTing · 29/06/2019 23:53

JFK= Jesus fucking Christ.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/06/2019 23:56

Thanks aPengTing

Storkbloom · 30/06/2019 00:00

Finish on her face to top it off (ay)"

If it's consensual , there's nothing wrong with that.

I'm a woman, the lyrics don't bother me. But them I'm a big Eminem fan that knows all the lyrics to Kim, so....

Mayday19 · 30/06/2019 00:43

All heroes have feet of clay.
I don't know this singer, I'm much too old, but couldn't he still be cool and brave and do good works AND demonstrate a respectful position towards women in his language? Was his song better for saying slut in it?

happinessischocolate · 30/06/2019 00:52

According to urban dictionary Pengting is all one word, and often abbreviated to peng and means perfect or gorgeous no mention of ting being an abbreviation of thing.

This is also how my 2 teenagers understand pengting, nothing about calling anyone a thing.
