To feel the rage with “teacher tired” posts

The season of teachers posting SM messages “no one knows tired like an end of term teacher/TA/dinner lady” is almost upon us.

I want to scream, what about the fuckers who work stupid hours all week and don’t get 6 weeks off in the summer, half term, two weeks Easter, two weeks at Christmas.

I wouldn’t be a teacher for all the tea in China but these people chose their career.

Grrr, actually don’t care if I’m BU.

Well said @Iggly.

Youngandfree · 29/06/2019 09:37

@hanvicteacher yes!! In terms of planning we do handwritten daily plans
E.g
9.30-10.10 maths (see book) page 47 long division
10.10-10.50 English (see book) page 32 adjectives
I write those out to cover two weeks
Then we also type up fortnightly plans - this is a bit more detail, includes learning outcomes, strands of curriculum, topics and pages covered, resources used etc etc. Then at the end of every month we have to submit to our head a “cuntas miosuil” which is a monthly record of progress. (So what we have covered) but it doesn’t take forever to do. Our children finish at 2.40 and I stay until 3.20ish. Unless we have a meeting (like * said only happens twice a month and finishes around 4.
Marking happens in classroom with mainly verbal feedback.
Teaching is a highly regarded profession here in Ireland and I am very lucky in my school as the parents are very supportive. Some friends of mine do have the odd parent who can be annoying but in general over here they let the teachers “TEACH”!

needmorespace · 29/06/2019 09:37

WRT only having 5 weeks off: at least those can be taken at your discretion. Teachers can't take a break outside the holidays and any emergency leave is therefore unpaid

er, actually they can't be taken at our discretion - what a bizarre notion, we have to apply for them and regularly get turned down - you can't plan holidays because if you book before your leave is granted you risk not being given it. In my workplace (a local authority) there is no 'emergency' pay. My daughter was admitted to hospital with meningitis last year, in resuscitation, and I had to take it as either leave or unpaid.
I know several teachers (my closest friend is a head) and frankly I have never seen any evidence whatsoever of a 60 hour week. And that is not me being goady - I wouldn't want to be a teacher. And I have never seen any evidence of working through the holidays.
Yes, it is a hard job but a lot of jobs are hard. All jobs are hard when you are not in control of your own time.
And I don't understand that this time of year is exhausting for teachers - from my recollection of my kids being in school, they don't do anything at this time of year - it always felt like school was in wind-down.
Finally, I really take issue with the way children are described on this site (not just this thread). When posters say, other people's 'little shits' or 'little darlings'. It is fucking nasty.

brainache78 · 29/06/2019 09:42

Here's one for people to copy and paste into threads like this one...

I'm a teacher.

I work harder than anyone else IN THE WORLD.
I drag myself to work on foot with no shoes because I can't afford a car, or even shoes to wear. I am so underpaid. I also give all of my salary to the children. Because I am THAT selfless.

I work 24 hour days and never have a wee. I've had a catheter put in and a saline drip because I don't have time for a sip of water for weeks at a time:

Doctors, nurses, criminal lawyers, parents of challenging SEN children or sick babies...none of them work as hard as I do.

The holidays are a myth. I sleep at school. I even do the cleaning.

I post meme after meme on social media about how hard I have it - and then come onto Mumsnet to say the same again.

Because I work SOOO hard and no one appreciates me, or puts me on a pedestal, which I so deserve to be on.

I fully expect a sainthood and to die the day the retire.

There. Does that help? Because for all of the 'teachers are moaning' posts, I've never ever seen anyone back it up with any evidence. I don't see posts from teachers moaning about their lot. I've never actually heard a teacher say anything of the sort.

I have, however, seen plenty of people suggesting that teachers do NOTHING but moan.

So if you need some evidence to back up the teacher bashing, you can use that.

HTH.

yoursworried · 29/06/2019 09:59

I am a teacher. I've never posted a meme like this and neither do any of the numerous teachers I know. Everyone gets tired from work- teachers included. Why the special vitriol for them? If it's because of the holidays then it's tough shit really - do you want your kids to go to school 52 weeks a year or are you happy for them to have a break? If the latter then you'll have to accept that there's no kids in school for them to teach so they may as well stay at home and enjoy the perk of the job. I teach because I like it and I appreciate not having to find childcare in the holidays 🤷‍♀️.

mumsneedwine · 29/06/2019 10:01

One plus. School near me has an outdoor pool. And I'm friends with the teachers. Happy days ☀️🏊‍♀️

noeyedeer · 29/06/2019 10:02

I quit teaching three years ago. I miss it, the actual teaching, but not enough to go back just yet.

I think all the tiredness posts that people seem to see must get overwhelming because all the teachers you know are all about to go on holiday at the same time.

It's also a fact that this term the majority of the workload hits all at once, again, it's just the nature of the job. Assessments, reports, analysing data, performance management, final observations, productions, class lists, new curriculum or initiative planning, shuffling year groups, changing classrooms, sharing information with new schools or classes etc.

Do I think it's the hardest job in the world? No. I do think it's a particular type of tired that can get overwhelming, I'm sure doctors, nurses etc also know the feeling.

I'm guilty of posting the owl meme before. It very accurately summed up how I felt.

BelindasGleeTeam · 29/06/2019 10:10

The kids get what they feel is a wind down.

You ever taken 850 kids on mass school trip to Alton towers? I have. It's not fun for the teachers.

The kids doing easy stuff? That's because the teacher is sat at the computer slogging through the last data drops, assessment marking for said data drops, planning for September that SLT want before we break up.

Secondary also have new Ofsted framework they have to make sure they've jumped all the hoops for incase the dreaded inspectors turn up.

All after you've just finished exam season.

And it's hot. 32 hot teenagers in a room with windows on two sides of the room and only open two inches. They're tetchy and tired. We are tetchy and tired.

We all know the end is in sight....and we are lucky for the holidays. They're a huge reason I'm still teaching.

But yes, you've got 200,000 people in this country who can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That's why it's noticeable. There's just a lot of us!!!

ashmts · 29/06/2019 10:25

Pieceofpurplesky

@ashmts what pay rise? The majority of teachers didn't get one.

Apologies, I'm Scottish and was referring to the 13% rise but that seems to only be in Scotland. In that case I'd say our teachers are going to be very well paid but an English classroom teacher's pay seems in line with other public sector jobs. Maybe slightly better. I think teachers' starting salaries are a bit rubbish to be fair but they do go up quite quickly.

mumsneedwine · 29/06/2019 10:25

My lot won't be taking it easy until 25th July. We break up on 24th. I don't have time to waste with year 10 & 12 if going to finish stuff in time for exams next year. And still have lots of curriculum to get through with KS3 too. Might do a few whizz bang lessons on last week but otherwise I expect the same standard of work and behaviour. Kids don't always agree with me on this.
Anyway, writing reports by another schools pool with a cup of tea. Life not too bad. And Love Island is spicing up too 😁.

Lizzie3869 · 29/06/2019 10:37

WRT only having 5 weeks off: at least those can be taken at your discretion. Teachers can't take a break outside the holidays and any emergency leave is therefore unpaid

Not true about other sectors. My DH works for the local council (bridge engineer) and needs to plan his leave well in advance. Especially now he's a manager.

Plus, he's a parent and does like to take leave when our DDs are on holiday.

starzig · 29/06/2019 10:44

I get where you are coming from OP. And it's not just teachers. Many people work their asses off 7 days a week doing jobs that contribute to society but unless you are in the public eye you are deemed of lesser importance. I couldn't and wouldn't want to do a teachers job but in the same breath I very much doubt they would want and could cope with mine.

SoupDragon · 29/06/2019 10:50

Plus, he's a parent and does like to take leave when our DDs are on holiday.

"Likes to" is very different to "can only"

fedup21 · 29/06/2019 10:53

One last point : I can guarantee that the 6/8 weeks of summer hols for teachers will soon be a thing of the past. There simply isn't enough money to keep on paying for it.

There’s always one who has no idea that teachers aren’t paid for their holidays Grin.

Shall we start the

Why can’t teachers have inset days during the school holidays ...

Or

Why can’t teachers strike on a Saturday?

Next...

SoupDragon · 29/06/2019 10:57

There’s always one who has no idea that teachers aren’t paid for their holidays

Oh, there's always far more than one!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 29/06/2019 11:00

I work in a school and I have friends that also work in schools. Yes they moan it's hard, stressful and they're tired but I have never seen any of them post thet they're the most tired or work the hardest or whatever. Not on here either. It always seems to be non teaching people (that would never be a teacher anyways) that spot these posts. Or more likely it's just their interpretation of it,complete with bias and chip on shoulder.

Mumsymumphy · 29/06/2019 11:01

I'm starting a tally chart of teacher-bashing threads.

fedup21 · 29/06/2019 11:03

If I could go back in time, I would have trained to be a teacher. Loads of holidays, a stable career (as things go) , and more money than the industry I've ended up in

Go and train to be a teacher now then! There’s a recruitment and retention crisis in case you didn’t know-you’ll land a jo as an NQT easily!

Just watch it after a few years though when you start to try to provrsss up the pay scale...

fedup21 · 29/06/2019 11:03

Progress!

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2019 11:13

I have just checked in on my Facebook (nearly all my friends are teachers) :

One (American ) cousin posting memes about holiday (she is a teacher) and being happy
One ex colleague (not a teacher ) posting almost daily memes and brags about her great new job, her promotions, her SBXH, her mental health, and her perfect daughter
One teacher colleague having a moan about marking : she has been pretty much ignored
My BIL posting endless endless anti abortion, pro Trump memes and articles for me to block. And his wife putting Christian stuff on there
Lots of people selling tat
People moaning about our village being a town
One woman posting constantly about how tired she is as a 'mummy'
Same woman posting constantly about how tired and shit and underfunded the job of working in the police force is. (which I am sure I believe and don't judge at all)

Just for info.

fedup21 · 29/06/2019 11:13

Also what I mean by stable career is there are always teaching jobs available, and always will be. You can move to almost any area, and many teachers stay in posts for decades. That's rare in other industries

I think you are basing your information on how things used to be. Things have changed dramatically in the last few years.

There are loads of jobs advertised..., for NQTs. If you want to teach full time and are heading to the top of MPS or UPS, you are much less desirable. No teachers over the age of 40 in my school and many of those I knew of locally, were managed out on capability. They were very good teachers, just expensive.

I’m part time. If I wanted to increase my hours, I wouldn’t be able to where I am, because we can’t afford it. HLTAs are used to prop up job shares as they are cheaper. If I wanted to move schools, I could never find a job share where they’d be prepared to pay £23k for me on UPS3 for 3 days, when they could fill a class for 5 days with someone 20 years younger on the same pay. Pay portability has been scrapped, so I could move but would have to drop to the start of the main pay scale. To go full time, finding a school to pay me £38k full time (rather than the cheap NQT) just isn’t going to happen. It’s very easy to get trapped.

Gold plated pensions? Not for most of us.

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2019 11:14

ps ex colleague's great new job not in a school, to clarify!

fedup21 · 29/06/2019 11:15

The season of teachers posting SM messages “no one knows tired like an end of term teacher/TA/dinner lady” is almost upon us.

A mumsnet whinge about something that hasn’t actually happened but you think it MIGHT Grin.

Do you work for the Daily Mail?

Passthecherrycoke · 29/06/2019 11:15

“There’s always one who has no idea that teachers aren’t paid for their holidays”

I think lots of teachers think they’re paid for their holidays! As I said on page 17 I was told on MN last week that teachers are paid for their annual leave allowance, albeit that their 30 days doesn’t cover the entire school holidays And they obviously don’t get to choose when they take them

But everyone gets annual leave. It can’t be the case that teachers aren’t allowed to take paid holiday in term time but also don’t get paid for school holidays - that would be illegal.

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/06/2019 11:21

@Passthecherrycoke teachers are paid for 30 days holiday. The rest is unpaid.
