To feel the rage with “teacher tired” posts

Rainbowsandglitterbullshit · 28/06/2019 18:26

The season of teachers posting SM messages “no one knows tired like an end of term teacher/TA/dinner lady” is almost upon us.

I want to scream, what about the fuckers who work stupid hours all week and don’t get 6 weeks off in the summer, half term, two weeks Easter, two weeks at Christmas.

I wouldn’t be a teacher for all the tea in China but these people chose their career.

Grrr, actually don’t care if I’m BU.

Looking after 30 children is what you signed up to surely ?

Suzeyshoes · 28/06/2019 21:44

I worked for 12 years as a fashion buyer, one of the most notoriously competitive and bitchy careers, working late every night, and retrained to be a teacher 5 years ago. It doesn't even come close to the physical exhaustion I feel at the end of a term. What a frickin mistake! Work life balance? I work EVERY evening whilst my friends are watching box sets.
Of course there are more difficult jobs. But people have no idea how tiring it is being entirely responsible for 30 kids 8 hours a day then going home to mark all night. There's a reason teachers are leaving the profession in droves..

mumsneedwine · 28/06/2019 21:45

Er 150+ a day. But only from 8.30/3 and then I go to the pub. Anyway, more importantly Tommy is killing it.

Rainonmyguitar · 28/06/2019 21:46

I wouldn’t be a teacher for all the tea in China but these people chose their career

I have several teacher friends who are fabulous people but don’t set the world alight in terms of intelligence

Another mumsnet phrase tripped out by morons who have no more intelligence than originality

Oh OP, thank god you chose another career because honestly, I would be horrified to think someone like you was in the teaching profession with an attitude like yours. You wouldn't last 2 minutes as a teacher anyway.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 28/06/2019 21:47

Don't get me wrong I think teaching is a tough job.

But what I don't understand is why teachers moan about how bad it is. Why don't they just do something else? Admin or something 9-5 if it's that awful.

spanieleyes · 28/06/2019 21:47

If every shop assistant in the country , or every optician or every police officer or whatever occupation you care to name had to take the same week off at the same time then, you can pretty much guarantee that the week before there would be numerous posts from shop assistants or opticians or the police or whoever saying how they can't wait for the holiday , how tired they are and how much they are looking forward to the break. But they don't , they have different holidays at different times so the posts are shared out. Teacher pretty much all have the same weeks holidays and all post about them at the same time. critical mass!

ilovesooty · 28/06/2019 21:49

I don't think there's much point in responding to @Shayne11 and that latest post, which has to win this week's prize for stupidity.

ilovesooty · 28/06/2019 21:52

I meant of course the post at 21.43.

Shayne11 · 28/06/2019 21:52

£40k on a U3 with a TLR - that’s stupid.

Good night martyrs.

CanILeavenowplease · 28/06/2019 21:54

30 children a day? Try Secondary where they a different set of 28 - 34 file through every hour. Then there’s your form you need to register twice a day. And no teacher starts work at 9 - we have daily briefings which we are expected to attend at least 30 minutes before school starts. We don’t leave at 3, we need to set up for the next day so that’s tidying, printing and copying. And then we call parents and catch up on 30 emails that popped in our inboxes and make the necessary responses. We have after school meetings and compulsory training at least one night a week. Then we go home and at some point before the next morning, plan an additional 5 lessons, make any resources, and mark any books with 5 different colours to conform to the latest marking policy. But hey ho, we’re lazy sons of and do fuck all, eh?

fedup21 · 28/06/2019 21:55

And your also overpaid which is why school budgets are in deficit.

Yeah-that’s exactly why Confused.

ilovesooty · 28/06/2019 21:56

Don't bother. @Shayne11 isn't very bright and is a newish poster honing her goady fuckery skills. Bless. Grin

sweetkitty · 28/06/2019 21:57

I’m a teacher who broke up for the summer holidays today Grin 6 weeks

It’s been a long hard year I work with children with ASN I love my job but I also love my holidays.

Children deserve long Summer holidays it’s part of childhood, no children to teach means holidays for teachers too.

Schuyler · 28/06/2019 22:01

I’m married to a teacher who works hard and we have many teacher friends. I also have teachers in my family. None of them regularly work the hours so many proclaim on here. Do they work damn hard and long hours under immense pressure and criticism? Yes, it’s not a 9 am to 3 pm job. However, I think some people on here over egg the pudding on here. I know some weeks are manic but I don’t believe all the MN teachers are consistently doing as much as they say. Perhaps some do but quantity isn’t always quality.

I know the vast majority of teachers work hard though and Wine I hope you have a lovely summer break and get time away from work and stress.

RainbowMum11 · 28/06/2019 22:01

An of school friend of mine, when she was an NQT (primary) was going out with a farmer.
We all went out for a meal, there were 6 of us, 2 self employed, 2 full time professionals, her & her farmer BF.
She actually said that none of us understood how hard she had to work, how tired she was.
My DM was a teacher so I'm very much aware of how much she always had to work through the evenings, weekends & holidays.
However, compared to a farmer who literally is 'at work' 24/7 - we just all had to roll our eyes.
Their relationship didn't last long!

@shayne11 has certainly run out of ammunition, I was hoping to get a full bingo card.

iamthere123 · 28/06/2019 22:13

@Shayne11 I’ll map out my week - not for comparison, just so you have all the information to hand. I arrive at school at 7.15am I leave at 6pm when I’m kicked out by the caretaker. Except on Wednesday when there is a fitness class so school is open TIL 7.45 so pretty much every wed I do over 12hours. I often do another couple in the eve (except wed) and between 6 and 8 hours over the weekend. Usually work between 3 and 4 days every week of the hols except summer where I like to cram it into three weeks then have three weeks off. I don’t complain about my job because those children are worth it. Every. Single. One. From the kid who has no breakfast every morning, to the kid who is currently grieving again for the mother she lost 2 years ago yesterday to the entitled little brat who came in at 12 yesterday because daddy didn’t want to wake him up. They are who matters to my job. Not people that spend their time moaning and bitching about someone else’s job. I’ve spent this evening on Pinterest and twinkl getting ideas and making beautiful displays to tempt my reluctant readers to read over the summer. I feel good about my life, try finding something that makes you feel good about yours so you don’t have to spend your evening insulting strangers. May I suggest knitting - it’s really relaxing.

fedup21 · 28/06/2019 22:18

Why did the teacher not count as a full time professional as well?

Dahlietta · 28/06/2019 22:23

But what I don't understand is why teachers moan about how bad it is.

But we don't all do it! I certainly don't - I've never posted a teacher meme on social media. I haven't posted anything either about the fact that we broke up today for 9 weeks (whoop!) and I'm not going to pretend that I will be spending all of that time working.

Vanderlylecrybabygeek · 28/06/2019 22:24

Babdoc. In 1981 I was taken into intensive care as a baby. My dad said in 5 days there was one female doctor that he swore was there all the time. He wondered if she had any sleep at all

LolaSmiles · 28/06/2019 22:28

It very much depends on school.

Every profession has its martyrs who are very vocal about how many hours they work, how hard they work, how literally nobody understands (as opposed to explaining their challenges for clarity or silly jokes). Teachers are no different. There are some martyrs in teaching and some complainers, but just like any other job.

Some schools look after their staff, staff work more than 9-3 (obviously) but teachers can do a good job on 8-5:30/6 with some prep on a weekend. Some week there is more due to meetings, open evenings, reports due etc, but overall it's a set of standard hours for a professional job (when many profession jobs mean working a bit outaide core hours). These schools are the minority I believe.

Other schools are horrendous environments. They don't value staff, they have new initiatives every week, they have a revolving door of staff, experienced staff vanish and are replaced by NQTs who might last 3 years. They have weekly book scrutiny, learning walks most days, teachers have to submit their planning a week in advance, they don't support staff with behaviour. They have a lot of senior leaders all with the need to stand out which usually means another thing for classroom teachers to do. Marking has to be done in 82 different colours and you better use baby pink pastel highlighter for your SPaG and not fuschia unless you're looking at capability.

Many schools are in the middle.

AzraiL · 28/06/2019 22:28

Expand your mind. More than one type of person is allowed to be tired.

blue25 · 28/06/2019 22:29

YANBU. I used to be a teacher. My school was full of teachers moaning constantly, some in their 20's.

Very few had the intelligence/drive to get out and retrain or find a job that they were happy with. Many have remained teaching, still unhappy, still moaning...

Cinammoncake · 28/06/2019 22:32

Dreadful teacher bashing on here.

I think teachers should go on strike. Why are you not? the conditions sound terrible.

It seems that teachers are being taken advantage of in terms of being conscientious. They are also picking up and dealing with a lot of societies problems. Giving all the time and not getting much in return because the pay's not what it should be.

If they complain, they're accused of moaning. So, go on strike? Or work to rule. Then parents and the govt would have to sit up and listen.
