Not to have realised until now that Joey Maynard’s ‘displaced organ’ was a prolapse?

I know there is or was an enormous Chalet School thread but I can’t spend six weeks trawling through that.

Fascinated to note (because I’ve been reading the complete synopses how all the CS women taken seriously ill either went straight to the San or journeyed - over days - for a consultation with Sir James Talbot. It was he who diagnosed said ‘displaced organ’. At which point Joey had iirc nine children. May be wrong, lost count.

(I read and reread the entire series over my first three decades.)

Papergirl1968- just had a lovely early morning reading Gay from China in my garden. Thank you!

Blitheringheights · 04/07/2019 08:01

@Papergirl1968 ooh I beg you, make my summer with littlies more bearable!!! I long for chalet school!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 04/07/2019 08:03

May I also have the onedrive details @Papergirl1968? I was one of the original uploaders, but several computers down the line, I seem to have lost all the ebooks Sad.

Jins · 04/07/2019 08:08

Papergirl1968 please could I have the link as well. I did have the ebooks years ago but catastrophic computer failure lost them for me

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 08:15

@Papergirl1968

I’ve sent the details to Blithering, MyVision and Jins.

Happy to share spreading the pleasure!

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 08:16

I do hope I haven’t somehow destroyed a well oiled machine........Grin

Doubleraspberry · 04/07/2019 08:30

Me please!

Teddyreddy · 04/07/2019 08:35

@Papergirl1968 me too please. I owned lots of them as a child but gave them to my younger sister aged as a teenager....

bassclef · 04/07/2019 09:32

Could I have the one drive details too please? Thank you.

Papergirl1968 · 04/07/2019 10:07

No, that’s great, thank you, Bertrand.
I’ll get round to the others later unless you have the chance first.
Be warned people, they are strangely addictive! Many an hour has slipped by while I’ve been...I was going to say enthralled but perhaps entertained is a better word...by the goings on in the Tyrol!
And it’s true that reading them as an adult, you do think WTF! Shock

Apileofballyhoo · 04/07/2019 10:21

I did look up to see if archive.org had any and they have a few of the early ones, if anyone has the same problem as me and couldn't log in. There's a waiting list for all of them though.

QuaterMiss · 04/07/2019 10:31

I don’t have time to read CS books.

I’ve got things to do.

Important deadlines.

A life ...

But I’ve already forgotten the synopsis of Gay from China, which was one of the two or three I never owned.

Please may I also have the thingummy?

I believe Gay from China is the one with the sub-plot where Sybil scalds her little sister.

ReanimatedSGB · 04/07/2019 11:52

Gay from China is one of the good WW2 ones. Practically the entire SLT get maimed in a bus crash, so they have to employ a new HT - the evil Miss Bubb, who is a shocking bully and - gasp!- disapproves of Guides, team sports and even music.
There's a new girl, Jacynth, who has been living in exquisite genteel poverty with her ailing Auntie; she and Gay become friends. Then Gay has a spat with Evil Miss Bubb and is forbidden to go home and see her soldier brother before he departs on a war mission, so she runs away. When she comes back, she's managed to catch German measles and gives it to the whole school, including Jacynth, whose Auntie is having some sort of major surgery and who then dies of it.

It's one of those that, to an adult reader, is nearly as enthralling with its depiction of the daily details of life as for its plot.

Fi72 · 04/07/2019 12:06

@Papergirl1968 Another to add for the link to the One Drive, please! Thank you!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/07/2019 12:45

@Papergirl1968 or @BertrandRussell I would really love the link to the OneDrive please.

I've just started a holiday and would love some holiday reading.

Squirrel26 · 04/07/2019 13:52

Miss Bubb pops up later in one of the Swiss books. She’s asking for work tutoring 6th formers because she’s lost all her money, and she has TB (naturally) and has been advised to go and live in the mountains (of course she has) and surprise! When she gets there, there is the Chalet School. Then a bit later on, she dies.

Now that I think about that as an adult, that’s sinister as fuck. ‘Cross the Chalet School, and we’ll see to it your life goes down the toilet and you have to come and beg for help from us. It might take a while, but it’ll happen. Then when you die we’ll pretend to be all sorry, and say things like ‘such a shame. If only she’d come out to Switzerland earlier. And been nicer to Joey in 1942.’

notoafternoontea · 04/07/2019 14:23

@squirrel26 am I right in remembering that she's denied said work and that Joey is vicious about her to Nell? It certainly isn't very reflective of Chalet School values!

I found an old link to the OneDrive from 2014 but I remember the password changed, and I was given it on the old thread....it's probably changed again since.

Squirrel26 · 04/07/2019 15:33

I think you are right, notoafternoontea, Joey is horrible about her. I think Nell vaguely says that helping her would be the right thing to do, and then they...don’t.

missyB1 · 04/07/2019 15:42

Can anyone solve this mystery for me? Is Nell the same teacher as Bill? If so why the name change? Or is Nell actually Hilda Annersley? I get very confused on this issue!

Doubleraspberry · 04/07/2019 15:49

Nell is Miss Wilson. Nell is short for Helena, which is her first name, and Bill is a nickname from Wilson. Len is named after her. Miss Annersley is often Nan in the earlier books.

BertrandRussell · 04/07/2019 15:50

I’m happy to send the link- but I want to make @Papergirl1968 and I don’t end up both doing it. So If anyone pms me this afternoon i’lll send it- then we can tidy up the stragglers this evening. I’m not doing anything else while the tennis is on, so that’s fine. Would that work?

cwg1 · 04/07/2019 15:57

Pretty please for the link.

missyB1 · 04/07/2019 16:31

Thanks Doubleraspberry yes I remember Miss Annersley being Nan!

notoafternoontea · 04/07/2019 16:52

Yes Nan is Hilda Annersley and Nell is what the teachers call Miss Wilson, Bill is what the girls call her (I think)
