Not to have realised until now that Joey Maynard’s ‘displaced organ’ was a prolapse?

I know there is or was an enormous Chalet School thread but I can’t spend six weeks trawling through that.

Fascinated to note (because I’ve been reading the complete synopses how all the CS women taken seriously ill either went straight to the San or journeyed - over days - for a consultation with Sir James Talbot. It was he who diagnosed said ‘displaced organ’. At which point Joey had iirc nine children. May be wrong, lost count.

(I read and reread the entire series over my first three decades.)

Thanks Parker231 and everyone who helped with this. I asked DH to download the files to my kindle and I started reading the first book last night. A lovely blast from the past.

SweetestThing · 12/07/2019 14:22

Just finished Chalet Girls Grow Up. Some things I wasn't expecting but pleased to see that Mary Lou turned out to be as self-absorbed as I always suspected and that Jo's obsession with remaining part of the school was mocked. Reg and his relentless pursuit of Len was always a bit creepy.

We didn't hear much about Charles other than his "summer flu" - I am thinking it was much, much more than that...

HeroicAlien · 12/07/2019 15:53

SweetestThing I finished it yesterday. I really enjoyed the first bit as it felt quite tongue in cheek - almost as if the author had been reading this thread! But the second half seemed quite miserable, at if she didn't really know how to create an ending for each of them, so life just kept getting worse.

If that's how Chalet School girls turn out, in glad I didn't go! Or maybe that's just the Maynards...

Papergirl1968 · 12/07/2019 16:46

Thanks, Parker,
They’ve gone into my old Dropbox which is full so I can’t open them at the moment but am deleting photos to make room.
I’d like to keep the books I haven’t read for holiday in a month, but I bet I won’t be able to wait...

Papergirl1968 · 12/07/2019 20:50

I’ve deleted some photos and I’m IN! I’m so excited! And I doubt I’ll hold out for holiday in four weeks...
Thank you Parker and well done!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 12/07/2019 22:47

It is amazing to have these books.

It is topping and altogether very jolly.

Thank you.

Papergirl1968 · 12/07/2019 23:10

I’ve caved in and started Theodora.
Joey is pregnant. Now there’s a surprise Grin

BertrandRussell · 12/07/2019 23:44

I’ve printed off a list so I can tick them off as I read. I claim my prize as the saddest person here.

LaurieMarlow · 13/07/2019 00:22

I binge read Exile. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

But how the fuck did no one in authority cop that Gertrude was a spy? Who the would take a German sounding girl with a suspiciously German sounding name in the midst of war after previous trouble with gestapo?

And that it took Robin of all people to figure it out. I thought Mrs Annersley was supposed to be a smart woman Confused

I know there’s no answer to my question beyond ‘plot’, but just wanted to rant Grin

LaurieMarlow · 13/07/2019 00:23

Also is CS at war and CS goes to it the same book? Confused.

ReanimatedSGB · 13/07/2019 00:25

(I have all of them and am gradually replacing the Armada abridged ones with the GGBP versions).

I did read Chalet Girls Grow Up and... didn't like it all that much. It started off interesting but then everyone kept exploding and committing suicide and misery on top of misery. In the end it started feeling like a parody by someone who hadn't liked the originals much.

ReanimatedSGB · 13/07/2019 00:26

LaurieMarlow: Yes. One or two of the Armada ones had slightly altered titles - or were split into two books (the main ones being The New Chalet School, The Chalet School and the Lintons, and Genius At The Chalet School.)

LaurieMarlow · 13/07/2019 00:28

Ah thank you. Makes sense.

I thought I’d stumbled upon one I hadn’t read. Doh.

AbsinthedelaBonchance · 13/07/2019 08:57

Thank you Parker :)

QuaterMiss · 13/07/2019 09:09

I’ve been so busy chasing up book recommendations on Jemima’s Miss Climpson thread, I haven’t had time to do more than glance in admiration at my newly filled Dropbox file, or even to open Gay From China! (Never mind actually getting on with Life ... Hmm)

But it’s glorious to have so much CS activity here. Thank you Parker and everyone else for sterling sharing efforts.

Many thanks Parker231 much appreciated.
Did I see an Abbey Girls book just sneak into the Dropbox? Lots of country dancing on the Sward to be had then!
Fellow Chaletians, if you think the Chalet lot can be strange, you ain't read nothing yet! Grin

EatingBreadAndHoney · 13/07/2019 11:15

Thank you @Parker231 for the Dropbox link, I'm away for a few days next week and I was going to be crocheting in the car but think I'll be reading, instead!

I'm not the driver, btw. Grin

ReanimatedSGB · 14/07/2019 12:15

Oh you will all hate me but, yesterday, I happened to wander in to a second hand bookshop...

Not to have realised until now that Joey Maynard’s ‘displaced organ’ was a prolapse?
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/07/2019 13:46

I have lost many hours to the Dropbox. I'm trying to work out, if she was so ill in Richenda in November how on earth she can be due a baby in July in Theodora?

swampytiggaa · 14/07/2019 14:17

Alicecooperslovechild · 14/07/2019 17:03

So jealous Reanimated. I love reading them on the a Kindle but there is something amazing about an old book.

Flurgle · 14/07/2019 20:14

I have asked for a link.
Been trying to find a way for years to relive my love of these without selling one of the children.

Flurgle · 14/07/2019 20:19

Thank you!

Bloatstoat · 14/07/2019 20:28

@Parker231 I've just sent a pm about the Dropbox, super excited! Hours of holding a refluxy 5 month old to keep her asleep are looking less awful!

Parker231 · 14/07/2019 20:48

Hopefully I’m now up to date with sending out the Dropbox links?
