Fascinated to note (because I’ve been reading the complete synopses how all the CS women taken seriously ill either went straight to the San or journeyed - over days - for a consultation with Sir James Talbot. It was he who diagnosed said ‘displaced organ’. At which point Joey had iirc nine children. May be wrong, lost count.

(I read and reread the entire series over my first three decades.)

Coadjutor, to be accurate. According to google it’s a Latin term usually used for bishops etc that means equal to but informally or unofficially. So I guess while jo and Anna are considered equal in terms of running the house, jo is the mama, the real top dog.

You might be right, Laurie. I seem to remember Jo nicked a slave from Madge or vice versus. And Anna had one or two cousins who helped out too. Who was Rosa? Was she madge’s version of Anna?

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Rosa turned up randomly in Joey’s or Madge’s depending on where Elinor needed a handy slave.

Ah, they did help Miss Bubb when she reappeared: they gave her tutoring work for the sixth formers who were doing Classics.(In Excitements and they were all worried about her during Coming of Age - she keeled over in the middle of the Sale and was carted off to the San, lingered for a few more books though thoroughly offstage and then popped her clogs.
