Oven chips

noenergy · 27/06/2019 20:47

Recently got rid of my deep fat fryer so would like recommendations of the best oven chips, I like my chips to be chunky and have never really been keen on oven chips especially ones that seem to be quite heavily coated.

Nothing that's covered in beef dripping as they need to be veggie friendly.

Potato wedges are sooo easy. Just wedge small-medium potatoes and chuck over a load of olive oil, salt, pepper and whatever spices you like. Top tip, place them so the skin side is on the bottom and they wont stick to the tray or burn.

magicstar1 · 27/06/2019 21:11

Aldi have huge chunky Maris Piper chips

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 27/06/2019 21:11

What might you be being unreasonable about?

bluebellation · 27/06/2019 21:12

My vote is Aldi Homestyle, just lake sure you do them until they're brown and crispy

VivienneHolt · 27/06/2019 21:13

McCain now do something called ‘gourmet’ something or other and they are genuinely outstanding.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/06/2019 21:14

Another vote for Albert Bartlett ones, tried them last week and they are really nice.

I do sometimes make my own and I love much crinkle cutter thingy.

VivienneHolt · 27/06/2019 21:14

Gastro! That’s it, not gourmet.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 27/06/2019 21:14

I love the Iceland chunky ones - they're the biggest and fattest I've found yet.

Snog · 27/06/2019 21:24

McCain gastro

DontCallMeShitley · 27/06/2019 21:35

Look carefully at the bags before you buy them if you are concerned about the type of fat that is used.

I make my own chips, always in the oven with decent oil. Dry the chips off first and roll them about in a small amount of oil, hot oven and give them a turn once in a while.

Or parboil first.

flossie86 · 27/06/2019 21:40

Tesco finest triple cooked chips.......yummmmm

bluebluezoo · 27/06/2019 21:46

Check the ingredients. Potatoes plus oil, if there’s a long list avoid. Most mcain etc have shitloads of extras.

Hate to say it but the best ones i’ve come across are waitrose essential thick cut from ocado.

Howlovely · 27/06/2019 21:46

Definitely get an air fryer. They make even the most unremarkable frozen chip quite delicious!

MozzchopsThirty · 27/06/2019 21:46

Someone tell me about air fryers please

OneHanded · 27/06/2019 22:22

The mccains gastric are beef dripping FYI

OneHanded · 27/06/2019 22:23

Gastro* fucking autocorrect

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 27/06/2019 22:25

McCains chunky chips, coated with oil, salt and pepper. Oven chips are so much better if you cook them with a bit of oil.

Madvixen · 27/06/2019 22:26

McCains Gastro chips get my vote. They're the only oven chips that I actually enjoy

stucknoue · 27/06/2019 22:27

I just make potato wedges, easy

theoldtrout01876 · 28/06/2019 00:03

I stopped using oven chips.
I cut my potato into chips and put it in a bowl and toss with a couple tablespoons of oil. I add a mix of salt, onion powder, garlic powder ans paprika and toss to cover.
I spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake just like I would oven chips, so about 400 for 30 mins.
Its almost as quick as oven chips and way cheaper
Oh if you try this go wicked light on the salt

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/06/2019 00:10

McCains Gastro chips, absolutely gorgeous!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 28/06/2019 07:40

To everyone suggesting Gastro Chips:

Is nobody reading the OP where she says ^"Nothing that's covered in beef dripping as they need to be veggie friendly.""

Gastro Chips are indeed delicious, but they use beef dripping!

MrsPnut · 28/06/2019 07:42

I also like Albert Bartlett Rooster chips, they are the best ones we’ve tried and they actually crisp up.

Vagndidit · 28/06/2019 07:55

Albert Bartlett Roosters are amazing, as are Sainsbury's Rustic chips. The Rustic are a bit thinner though, but really good.

MotherWol · 28/06/2019 08:20

McCain skin-on fries are delicious, they usually have them in Iceland.
