Oven chips

noenergy · 27/06/2019 20:47

Recently got rid of my deep fat fryer so would like recommendations of the best oven chips, I like my chips to be chunky and have never really been keen on oven chips especially ones that seem to be quite heavily coated.

Nothing that's covered in beef dripping as they need to be veggie friendly.

You need the M&S triple cooked chips. They don’t taste like oven chips at all.

catsmother · 28/06/2019 09:15

Honestly, making your own is so quick and easy … and you can cut out any grey bits that you nearly always get in shop bought oven chips. Like most others, I usually just cut up potato, toss in oil and bake which is fine but if you have a little extra time, cutting them up very chunky and gently parboiling them for about 6 mins first, then letting drain and steam for a good 10 mins really makes a difference and IME you end up with something more akin to traditional chips that are crispy outside, fluffy within.

Aldi's own home fries knock off are the best I've ever tried.

IvanaPee · 28/06/2019 09:32

Jumping in to ask does it matter the brand of air fryer? There’s a massive price difference so I’m assuming some are shit?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 28/06/2019 09:35

I’ve been pleased with our air fryer. It uses a lot less oil than you’d need for DIY oven chips as it tosses them around to coat them and stop them sticking. I use ordinary potatoes in ours.

Destinysdaughter · 28/06/2019 09:37

If you get an airfryer you can make sweet potato chips that are NOT SOGGY! Woo hoo Grin

BillGiggeloe · 28/06/2019 09:46

Invest in an airfryer, you won't regret it.

I've got the Power XL one which wasn't that expensive and I use it all the time.

Thanks for the air fryer suggestions.

What do you do in them besides chips, if @noenergy doesn’t mind me asking!

DoneLikeAKipper · 28/06/2019 10:11

We only have Aunt Bessie straight cut ones here, use a drop of oil and put them on the top rack in the oven. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside (I’m very unbothered about chips in general, so they must be ok Grin).

BillGiggeloe · 28/06/2019 10:13

I ccok everything that you could cook in an oven in my airfryer.

I've even done fried eggs in it.

Chicken wings/drumsticks, steak, roasted veg, halloumi kebabs, toasted sandwiches, pork belly strips, sweet potato fries, celeriac fries, homemade chips...the list is endless.

Chances are if you think you can cook something in there, then you can!

FFS why do people ask what's your AIBU? Does it really matter?

Passthecherrycoke · 28/06/2019 10:23

Making your own isn’t quick though is it? Raw potato to chip takes 40-60 minutes in the oven depending on quantity.

Oven chips take 20-30. I agree with McCain home fries

NoParticularPattern · 28/06/2019 10:26

I love the Lidl Maris Piper chips. No idea if they’re covered in dripping or not though. I suspect you’re going to have to try a few even though you don’t want to!

Coralfish · 28/06/2019 10:28

*You could just cut up potatoes into chunky chips, spray with oil, sprinkle with salt and bake in the oven.

Much cheaper, and much nicer.*

Was thinking of investing In an air fryer.

I love my Tefal Actifry. I use a teaspoon of oil unless it is a dinner party/special occasion when I splash out with a tablespoon! I usually just chop potatoes into wedges (don't bother with the peeling/soaking/drying) and they come out beautifully.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 28/06/2019 11:55

Oh god I see the competitive MNers are out again.
Poor OP just asked about oven chips. Maybe she doesn't want to stand round chopping spuds up.

MadSweeney · 28/06/2019 12:05

I have found the holy grail of chip that's amazing in our actifry - Aunt Bessies.
But.
For some reason the small bags you get in Tesco etc are completely different to the huge 2kg bags from Farm Foods. The FF ones are much chunkier and cook much better.

So the answer is Aunt Bessies, but only in the 2kg bags.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/06/2019 12:47

If you have the time, get a bag of spuds and chip your own par boil, let them dry out, stick them in the oven with lots of fry lite and spices, they are amazing and really healthy compared with prepared oven chips.
I don't par boil as I chop them thinly.

EmeraldShamrock · 28/06/2019 12:50

Sorry I didn't rtft.

It is slimming worlds method, not sure about it being competitive.

isseywithcats · 28/06/2019 12:51

VivienneHolt · 28/06/2019 13:05
