Oven chips

noenergy · 27/06/2019 20:47

Recently got rid of my deep fat fryer so would like recommendations of the best oven chips, I like my chips to be chunky and have never really been keen on oven chips especially ones that seem to be quite heavily coated.

Nothing that's covered in beef dripping as they need to be veggie friendly.

Just make your own. Small potatoes cut into wedges, large potatoes cut into chunky chips, toss in oil and whatever flavourings you like (garlic and smoky paprika for me), chuck in a medium hot oven for 30-40 minutes. It's hardly rocket science.

Another vote for Aldi Homestyle Fries - the ones in the green and yellow packet

They're honestly the closest I've found to making them yourself

AdobeWanKenobi · 28/06/2019 13:58

Well gosh, I didn't know I could make my own chips! And all these years I've been thinking I could only have frozen ones. How enlightened am I today!

Lyricallie · 28/06/2019 14:54

I'm an air fryer convert here too. However if I had to buy oven chips it would be McCain's I think the wetherspoons and nandos chips are and they're great.

IvanaPee · 28/06/2019 17:24

It's hardly rocket science.

Really? Did anyone say it was rocket science? You don’t win any points for being a dickhead who manages to feel superior about potatoes. 🙄

HopelessLayout · 28/06/2019 17:31

Albert Bartlett.

HopelessLayout · 28/06/2019 17:32

@feelingverylazytoday What you are describing is roast potatoes, not chips.

ZazieTheCat · 28/06/2019 17:34

Air fryer is brilliant. Go for that. Much cheaper in the long run, and air fried chips taste much better than oven ones.

bellabasset · 28/06/2019 17:41

I love the gastro chips as well, but often par boil small potatoes, smash and sprinkle with a little veg oil and put in the oven.

youwillgo · 28/06/2019 17:48

Scotty Brand Chippy Chips, I'm not sure if all the supermarkets sell them but you can get them in Tesco. They really do taste like chippy chips!

sueelleker · 28/06/2019 18:03

I use McCains, but I have an airfryer which cooks them beautifully.

isseywithcats · 28/06/2019 20:40

we have the tefal actifry i dont know how much they are to buy as Oh brought it with him when we moved in together

sueelleker · 29/06/2019 08:54

Don't know how much the Actifry is, but mine came from Lakeland and cost £79.99.It's only small though, so no good for a family.

AliceRR · 29/06/2019 09:07

I was going to say OP get an air fryer and make your own chips. They are fantastic and better for you.

We’ve had a Philips one for 2 years and we use it a lot, not just for chips but also jackpot potatoes, sausages, fish fingers, basically heating anything you might fry or heat in the oven but it is much faster generally.

AliceRR · 29/06/2019 09:08

We love ours so much we got one for my parents for Christmas. I think they are about £180 those days but we got my parents’ one for about half that in Black Friday sales on Amazon

noenergy · 29/06/2019 09:14

I ended up getting the Lidl jumbo chips which were actually quite nice.

Am looking into airfryers, has anyone got the tower one? It's only £50 in B&M and a friend recommended it.

Sainsbury’s taste the difference triple cooked chips. Definitely the best oven chips.

TheLongRider · 29/06/2019 10:12

If you make your own potato wedges, zap them in the microwave for a couple of minutes before putting them in the oven. That gives them a fluffy inside and crispy outside.

IvanaPee · 29/06/2019 12:55

@TheLongRider do you put them in water or anything in the microwave?

TheLongRider · 01/07/2019 23:41

@IvanaPee - I chop them into wedges, skin on or off according to preference, put them in a bowl on their own, cover and microwave on full power for about 2-3 minutes. Then I tip them into a hot roasting pan with about a tbsp of oil in it, enough to coat them, season a roast until visibly crispy. Yum!

ISeeDeadDandelions · 04/07/2019 19:34

I bought the smaller tower air fryer from B&M and took it back as soon as I opened it. Went and bought a bigger one from curry's... just check the basket looks big enough as you don't want them piled in too much. One layer is best if you can...

HisBetterHalf · 04/07/2019 19:36

M&S triple cooked
