...that isn’t covered by takeaways that deliver (or Just Eat etc? I love living here but god I would kill for some readymade dinner right now.

Lighthearted, obv. DH is away on a work trip, 8 month old DD just gone to bed and the kitchen looks like a bomb’s gone off from my (failed) attempts to create tempting and nutritious weaning recipes.

I swore I would never become one of those cringy real life mum memes that bangs on about having g&t for dinner but I think I’m heading that way.

Seriously considering bribing next door’s teenager to go to the chippy for me Blush...

I have a 24mile round trip if I want a takeaway ....I’m still fat though 😩

Bloodless · 28/06/2019 06:49

Forgot to add, I don’t live in a village ...,I live in a really isolated place

Jacopone · 28/06/2019 07:14

@Omfgareyouforreal
It looks beautiful. I envy you.
I think this reliance on takeaways is a relatively recent thing. I wonder if it becomes the norm and cooking skills obsolete.

@wasgoingmadinthecountry and @HeyThereDelilah1 got to love Everest Inn!!
There’s one in Ashford too if that works out nearer?
Best Chinese in HYTHE is the Golden Bowl - but they don’t deliver to where we moved to 😭

KnittingForMittens · 28/06/2019 07:25

I've lived in a village and absolutely loved it. Hopefully will be moving back into one in the future! I only had two takeaways at the village I lived at. I understand what you mean though! It is tempting... living by the countryside in the middle of nowhere would be better. I'd love it!

mydogisthebest · 28/06/2019 08:53

@floribunda18, yes I could order lentils etc online but I would probably have to pay post and packing which could well be high.

I buy big packs of green, brown and red lentils, black eyed beans, chickpeas and lots of other things. It works out cheaper, we use a lot of those items and we do have the storage room. The little packs in supermarkets are expensive for what they contain and we would forever be going shopping for more when neither of us enjoy shopping.

As to chips cooked in dripping. Well should they not have notices up just in case any of their customers are vegetarian? I can honestly say some of the chips I have had since moving North have been the most disgusting I have ever eaten. They all ended up in the bin. I can cook much nicer chips at home and certainly do not use dripping

I live in a village. It has one grim pub. A school and a post office/shop. The shop sells ketchup and pot noodles and longlife bread. Nothing of excitement ever happens. You rarely see anyone around. It’s the most dull place ever. It isn’t even particularly pretty. No takeaways for miles.

RobikandLexik · 28/06/2019 11:17

@contentedsoul had to look up "ten bobs" and pleased I did.
Totally agree, cook from scratch and freeze half everytime, stocks the freezer for this eventuality.
Not sure I'd eat from our wheelie bin...

We are in a rural village and yeap we are the same .The nearest Dominoes is 20 min drive away and they don't deliver .We have a fab chinese from the next town 20mins away that do and could of Indian restaurants that do but always a wait .Lived here all my life so used to it .If DC's ever want a Macdonald's also 20min drive and nearest Kfc is good 25mins away.

MrsAmaretto · 28/06/2019 12:37

@Omfgareyouforreal phew! Thank goodness for that, it’s an institution! Though it’s 20miles south of the village I’m from so we didn’t go often. I now live on an island, so have not moved to a town or city. I cannot cope with the constant hoards of tourists and the fact everything is geared towards them and the place shuts in the winter. Must be a nightmare nowadays with universal credit for people who only work seasonally. Sustainable rural tourism is very difficult to achieve. You’d think more people would open food delivery places :) !

MrsAmaretto · 28/06/2019 12:38

My nearest dominoes is 180miles away and 12-14 hours on a ferry. I’m not keen on their pizza’s luckily 😂

Kanga83 · 28/06/2019 12:39

Village girl here too! I now have a freezer of ready meals for Friday and sat nights and lots and lots of wine. I too learned the hard way!

CanYouHelpFindThis · 28/06/2019 17:32

Dominoes deliver here.. and so does 1 burger delivery shop, but it really isnt great food.

We are a good 45 minute walk to the nearest normal shop. No little shops ..

I lived in London my whole life and thats what i miss most....

Notsurewhattodonow · 29/06/2019 08:12

I can get (mostly quite grim) food delivered but also not easily walk to buy milk and bread. Both are a sad change from London where we were surrounded by delicious take away food and, obviously, shops. We do almost never have take aways now though because they are so poor. So that’s good for us.

Omfgareyouforreal · 29/06/2019 08:47

Our village has a Co op and a tesco and loads of tourist shops. Plenty places to eat out but as I said earlier, no takeaway places. Plenty of chip shops lol and a pizza place and one Chinese but none deliver but all is in walking distance.

emerencealwayshopeful · 29/06/2019 12:19

When I was pregnant with number 3 I had a breakdown one night when I realised there was absolutely nothing to eat in the house that appealed and my 1 and 2 year olds were both snotty and not going to sleep. And it was hideous weather so getting to a takeaway shop was impossible.

I'm lucky that now there are delivery options available - and so are my (no longer small) children. I salute all those who managed single-adult with small baby in a household night after night with no food delivery options.

pinkstripeycat · 29/06/2019 15:31

We lived in a village in Suffolk about a 7 minute drive to the nearest town (if you can call it a town it was so tiny) but totally impossible to walk along the country road and a stretch of dual carriageway. The only thing we had in our village was a pub that didn’t serve food, a bakers and a post office until it closed. Nothing else. My DH worked shifts so I wasn alone with 2 DCs a lot. We used to walk the village on a summers evening after their bath in their double buggy listening to everyone having BBQs. It was very lonely but as I did the shopping I made sure i had plenty of scoff.

Omfgareyouforreal · 30/06/2019 08:51

I suppose the last thing I want to say is I'm shocked how many people are so reliant on takeaways! I spend the majority of my life in a town until just over a year ago and I can count on one hand how many takeaways I've ever bought. Remember, a takeaway is shit food. Just be organised and do a good shop each month/week, see what local farms deliver meat and egg packs (as its usually way cheaper then the supermarket) and make your own curry's etc. Plus you save a lot of money, know what you are putting in your body and won't get 'village life anxiety' 😜
