...that isn’t covered by takeaways that deliver (or Just Eat etc? I love living here but god I would kill for some readymade dinner right now.

Lighthearted, obv. DH is away on a work trip, 8 month old DD just gone to bed and the kitchen looks like a bomb’s gone off from my (failed) attempts to create tempting and nutritious weaning recipes.

I swore I would never become one of those cringy real life mum memes that bangs on about having g&t for dinner but I think I’m heading that way.

Seriously considering bribing next door’s teenager to go to the chippy for me Blush...

We live in a small town, still classed by the LA as a rural community, imagine the excitement when Dominos opened!

BouleBaker · 27/06/2019 06:26

Yes I don’t understand the Dominoes fascination either. It’s highly expensive greasy crap.

We can get 100’s of takeaways but we only get things delivered once every couple of months, if that. It’s a very expensive way to eat and most of it I can cook at home.

I do, however, have a well stocked freezer for nights I don’t want to cook.

hen10 · 27/06/2019 06:36

SingingLily I am 99% sure I live near you - we drive through your village most weekends (keeping strictly to the speed limit!) and I always think - "It would be lovely to live here - but then, it's miles away from ANYTHING useful." I don't think my teenagers would be up for it!

Siameasy · 27/06/2019 06:37

I’m glad for my waistline and bank balance that we don’t have Deliveroo here. Some of my London friends get it most days.

JulianFarquaarMP · 27/06/2019 06:58

I live in a small village. One small shop (where they fit an amazing amount of stuff in a small place) and two pubs, one of which does food. We can get Indian food delivered but that’s it. Luckily it’s delicious. I’m not fussed about dominoes (yuk) but I would like it if we could get Chinese food delivered - nearest takeaway is 5-10 mins drive away.

However I wouldn’t trade having food delivered for listening to wood pigeons in the morning, owls at night, looking out over fields and being able to walk out of my door and into the countryside.

Having said all that, worse than any lack of takeaway is having teens! Our bus service is very limited and having to pick them up from the station all the time is a total pain.

Elllicam · 27/06/2019 07:00

We don’t even have a shop Confused

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 07:02

We don't have a shop or any food delivery places. I love it.

foreverhanging · 27/06/2019 07:04

I'm on the edge of a dominos delivery area. It took 2 HOURS for it to turn up. V hangry lady at the door for them!

PollyPelargonium52 · 27/06/2019 07:07

I would sooner stick pins in my eyes than live marooned in a village.

It is bad enough living in a small town although I do have a Londis nearby the convenience of London before I moved up is sometimes sorely missed.

Everything shuts so early!

80sMum · 27/06/2019 07:09

I have never had a takeaway delivered! I have sometimes phoned through an order in advance but always for me to collect in person.

When we moved to our village over 30 years ago, there were no takeaways in the area that offered a delivery service. There are a few now, but I don't use the service. We don't have takeaway meals very often anyway, probably about 3 or 4 times a year.

stucknoue · 27/06/2019 07:33

I just quickly learned to be organised, I kept spice pastes etc so I could make curries etc when we wanted one. Thankfully dh had to drive past the chippy/Chinese and near to a large Waitrose on his way home so he brought food in a bit - we moved , there's over 300 outlets on just eat

MindatWork · 27/06/2019 07:40

I am loving how this thread has developed Grin.

We also have a scarecrow competition (in the next village over tho) but no ducks .

The most annoying thing is we’re not even that rural! We’re 20 mins from two large market towns in opposite directions, pretty much equidistant from two different dominoes outlets and neither of them will deliver.

I totally understand some people hate takeaways, don’t understand dominoes, would rather cook delicious and nutritious food at home etc etc - that’s not really where I was at last night though...

I live in London but went on holiday to deepest, most rural, remote Wales. I loved it and revelled in the the peace, quiet, countryside, lack of people. It was bliss and I spent the week dreaming of living there forever.

On our way home we spotted a drive through McDonalds and our relief and joy was a ridiculous thing to behold.

ThighsRelief · 27/06/2019 07:52

I don't like pizza, Indian, KFC, or Thai food but a lack of McDonalds and Chinese would probably give me rickets.

HeronLanyon · 27/06/2019 07:52

theghosttrain I have never had a takeaway delivery in The uk (have had ‘take out’ in the states). But for me it’s because I live very very central London. A different reason my waistline is suffering!

Quail15 · 27/06/2019 08:04

The only place that delivers to my village is the dominoes from the next village - we moved from Croydon and it was a bit of a shock but brilliant. We have only ordered a dominoes once since we moved many years ago (it was expensive and horrible).

We don't have a shop but do have a lovely pub. The lovely land lady used to box up any meal off the menu for us and would hand it to us over the garden fence Grin

Unfortunately she retired last year and the new lads aren't quite so accommodating Sad

I love village life though.

SingingLily · 27/06/2019 08:10

Then you'll have escaped the attention of our village speed watchers, hen10. There's four of them, all septuagenarians, and they take it in turns to don their special hi-vis jackets, point the special radar wotsit at speeding cars and scribble furiously on their special clipboards. Oddly enough, their wives are very happy for them to spend endless hours on this important work, even though they never catch out any villagers, only tourists. The first time NDN greeted me by hissing "Last of the Summer Wine. Pass it on", I was a little nonplussed but did so dutifully.

This is a village with a lot of code words Wink

There was an item on tv news last night about low hygiene standards and takeaway deliveries. Occurred to me I've never used any of the famous delivery companies and won't be doing so. I want to know where my dinners have been prepared and in what circumstances. Shudder.

MindatWork · 27/06/2019 08:16

@longwayoff so you’ve never eaten in a restaurant then? All of the takeaway places we drive to have a 5 star hygiene rating

I would never live in a village for that reason alone. Not just takeaway but the inability to get ethnic food ingredients puts me right off

Lycanthropology · 27/06/2019 09:09

Ah, our village doesn’t have scarecrow competitions, but it does have combine harvester races!

I would never live in a village for that reason alone. Not just takeaway but the inability to get ethnic food ingredients puts me right off

But excepting some of the more outlying Scottish Highland areas, most village dwellers can drive into their local town to buy such things.
There is an ethnic supermarket in my local town that I could reach in 35 minutes to stock up if I wanted. Occasionally we’ll get a takeaway , but have to drive 25 minutes each way. When we’re out at DCs’ after school activities, we might pick up chips or sometimes Chinese/Indian while we’re out and in semi civilisation.

Being in village doesn’t mean you are completely without access to everything, just that it’s not on your doorstep!

RottnestFerry · 27/06/2019 09:28

Reminds me of when my dirty living sister-in-law was sharing a recipe. Apparently, one obscure ingredient was readily available in our local Arab shop.

Our local shop does stock ethnic ingredients though... as long as you are happy with White British.

RottnestFerry · 27/06/2019 09:29

City living!

Bloody iPad.

longearedbat · 27/06/2019 09:36

We have scarecrow competitions and sheep racing, hunting, shooting and fishing. No food deliveries here except meals on wheels (appetito). We have a village green and ponds too.
We recently made the long trip to a kfc as we really fancied one.It was a year since our last fast food meal. We really enjoyed it though, which is a bit sad.
We do have a local pub within walking distance that does lovely food and beer though.

Hmm you’re crossing off a lot more locations than Villages, if that’s your criteria for where you live.

And anyway, Waitrose do deliveries.
