Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

I love RR. The evoque is nice, as is the discovery etc
If someone started a thread asking ‘why do all these poor people drive then they would be pulled apart for it... definitely inverse snobbery.
I drive a 12 year old 207 by the way... and I’m definitely not poor!

steff13 · 25/06/2019 17:59

Surely you just pick a car you love that's in your budget and that's that?

That's what I would have thought. I don't have a Range Rover, although I think my next car will be an Evoque, I quite like the look of it. Range Rovers/Land Rovers aren't that common here, though.

SushiTime · 25/06/2019 18:00

@ethelfleda exactly, it doesn't mean anything. We lease both our cars and are certainly not rich!

Cloudtree · 25/06/2019 18:00

They're not always expensive though, (particularly not land rovers)

I have a shiny black land rover (not a range rover). You can't tell the age. Owned outright. But its probably worth less than £10k

I have it because Its safe to drive and I need 4WD because we live on a steep hill in woodland.

Its nothing to do with keepign up with the Joneses or giving the impression I'm rich Hmm.

BoogleMcGroogle · 25/06/2019 18:00

ISayWhatNow Teslas! They really are super expensive, but I do see a few about here now. Are you in Cambridge? That's what I imagine all those silicon fen-preneurs to drive. Rich and Eco-conscious, it's a double message isn't it?

Passthecherrycoke · 25/06/2019 18:01

I wonder how many people actually own these Range Rovers. Many of them will be on finance and pcp

I never understand the arguments. Who cares if it’s on finance? They can still afford the finance, which means they have the money for it. A quick google suggests a new RR on finance is about £600 a month. Are you saying that somehow suggests these people “can’t really” afford their car? It’s £600 a month!

whippetwoman · 25/06/2019 18:01

@FudgeBrownie2019 Yes! I'm Warwickshire too. Literally every other person I know works for JLR and drives them.

CrotchetyQuaver · 25/06/2019 18:02

Maybe they like to support British manufacturing?

ethelfleda · 25/06/2019 18:03

Finally, I've put all those hours listening to Thinking Allowed with Laurie Taylor to some use

I love that show Grin

mabelmylove · 25/06/2019 18:04

I absolutely adore Range Rovers! If I were ever in the position to spend that much money on a car (highly unlikely!) a Range Rover would probably be my first choice.

legolife · 25/06/2019 18:04

@Passthecherrycoke but it's not theirs until it's all paid off? Like I said in my previous post. If you can't walk into a showroom and pay out right for a car you can't afford it 🤷🏻‍♀️ simples.

ethelfleda · 25/06/2019 18:06

I’m delighted that people buy Range Rovers, even if they are mainly bought as status symbols. They are designed in Warwickshire and built in Solihull & Liverpool. The engines are also made in the UK. JLR employs tens of thousands of British workers and are a big export earner

This!

Cloudtree · 25/06/2019 18:07

Like I said in my previous post. If you can't walk into a showroom and pay out right for a car you can't afford it 🤷🏻‍♀️ simples.

apply the same logic to housing and most people can't afford to live in their home..

Bizarre

ethelfleda · 25/06/2019 18:07

legolife
I could afford to buy a car outright, brand new but I would still use finance because many have 0% interest deals. Better my money stays in my account earning interest.

Ingurr · 25/06/2019 18:07

We have a Discovery to keep our 3 dogs in for dog walks and for getting around when we have snow/ice as we live in a rural area with lots of hills. The high driving position is good and it's very comfortable for long journeys.

Passthecherrycoke · 25/06/2019 18:07

It’s not “simples” it’s a ridiculous argument. Of course they can afford it. The fact they pay it off in instalments with interest is irrelevant- that’s how you bought your house after all?
It’s not sensible to drop £50k cash when you can get cheap finance

BogglesGoggles · 25/06/2019 18:08

Do they live in the country? Range rovers are the only cars that are suitable for rural driving ime.

Sadie789 · 25/06/2019 18:08

This thread is very green in colour. It’s actually quite pathetic.

legolife · 25/06/2019 18:09

@Cloudtree it's exactly the same. A mortgage doesn't mean you "own" your house. It means your living in it until you've paid it off. Then it's yours. Your life could be flipped upside down tomorrow and the lot would be taken from you.

BogglesGoggles · 25/06/2019 18:10

@Passthecherrycoke paying interest is a huge red flag of financial illiteracy. One should only pay interest when using the capital to generate a yield that outstrips interest payments.

Teddybear45 · 25/06/2019 18:10

The rich people where I live drive hybrids / electric cars. I think this might he an age issue.

WickedGoodDoge · 25/06/2019 18:11

DC are at private school. There’s a fair amount of Range Rover drivers but also a good mix of other cars. I considered buying one last time as I am very bad and drive down roads that aren’t really roads- I destroyed the undercarriage of my last car. Blush I didn’t because of all the appalling reviews re constant expensive repairs. I bought a Tiguan instead. Grin

BogglesGoggles · 25/06/2019 18:11

@legolife you do actually own it. The bank merely has a charge on the property. I know what you mean of course but just correcting a misconception.

jennymanara · 25/06/2019 18:11

I wouldn't care if the fuckers in the countryside on narrow roads would move over to the side of hedges, instead of making me do it, so they can keep their range rover clean and scratch free.

Bibbittybobbittyboo · 25/06/2019 18:12

We have a Range Rover and horror of horrors a private reg number. Ours is leased not because we can’t afford to buy one but basic economics would tell you that buying anything that depreciates rapidly would be madness.

No one we know has one and our child goes to the village primary.

We’re on our second RR which we intend to replace by a Tesla in 2 years.

We both grew up in poverty and a nice car was aspirational - I’m quite comfortable with any inverted snobbery
