Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

They are relatively affordable and high fashion at the moment that's all. It's not the first or last car that has been popular. Not entirely sure what the issue is with what others choose to drive. They aren't my thing but they aren't compulsory so no problem.

Only thing I would agree with is they aren't really the car of choice for true country types who own 8 dogs and ride every weekend, an old land rover with the exhaust up the side is more common at least in our parts, the more covered in earth the better too

FurFoxSake1 · 25/06/2019 18:24

'basic economics would tell you that buying anything that depreciates rapidly would be madness.'

But you ARE paying for that depreciation. The money you pay per month covers the depreciation so the dealer doesn't lose out.

Example - spending £500 (that's a guess) a month on leasing a car for three years leaves you £18,000 out of pocket with fuck all to show for it.

As opposed to just buying an £18,000 car and then, you know, having a car.

letsrunfar · 25/06/2019 18:24

You can always tell the "old money" types, they're the ones in the 18 year old Volvo, Merc or Landy. There kids hair is a bit messy in an endearing way!!

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/06/2019 18:24

The richest person I know buys himself a brand new Rolls Royce every couple of years. I'd like to say I'm not jealous but I absolutely am because he has his initials embroidered on the headrests. That's what I aspire to whilst the DC leave half-eaten apples in the side pockets of my current car.

Serin · 25/06/2019 18:25

I like them. They are good for the economy and keep.people in jobs.
However DH hates them, so we have a reliable Volvo, that is actually really comfy and practical.

Pinkmouse6 · 25/06/2019 18:25

Generally not the richest, most likely to be on finance and just a major case of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ ime.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/06/2019 18:25

This is so far from true it's unreal. Some old money types spend money on great cars, some don't. Old money isn't one type of person replicated and scattered about the country living the exact same life.

SushiTime · 25/06/2019 18:26

@Ncusername why am I a twat for having a private reg?

MsPeachh · 25/06/2019 18:26

Hate them! I live in a city where everyone parallel parks on the street outside their houses. Absolutely no need for them and yet more and more of the fuckers keep popping up on the street!

RightYesButNo · 25/06/2019 18:26

@EarlGreyOfTwinings, @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz, and @Trafalger are all absolutely bang on. I know a lot of people who work in finance (absolutely NOT wealthy myself) and of the ones that are actually millionaires or more, not one drives a Land Rover/ Range Rover (well, I think one of them drives a VERY well-travelled Grin 1980s Land Rover, but he said once he loves it and he’ll never let it die).

Pinkmouse6 · 25/06/2019 18:27

True Grin and they usually have no sense of style whatsoever.

rollingpine · 25/06/2019 18:28

Seriously, genuinely wealthy people are wealthy for a reason. They don't spend money if they don't need to.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 25/06/2019 18:28

of course they do. Not on chavy RR though.
Some rich people have really nice cars, no one is pretending otherwise.

I mean, even Katy Price has one, that says it all.

Yabbers · 25/06/2019 18:29

My next door neighbour drives a Range Rover. He isn’t rich.

I have a friend who is really quite wealthy. She drives a Peugeot.

topcat2014 · 25/06/2019 18:30

Dparents are millionaires & drive old Renaults - so not sure your "rich" = "range rovers" is always true.

Admittedly the cars were bought brand new, but have been kept for 10 years

Yabbers · 25/06/2019 18:31

All the poor people round here drive the same car, though. Can’t move in the car park for the silver Ford Focus. Such a crappy car.

shortsaint · 25/06/2019 18:33

If you live near me they are ten a penny. Basically because they all work for JLR and get a deal on them 😆

Kione · 25/06/2019 18:33

Big cars for no reason other than show off piss me off cos soon we won't fit on the road. I live in a small town with small roads.
It's tricky to use the school carpark, and one day at the supermarket carpark a yummy-mummy with one of those white, shiny, 4x4 was blocking me with her trolley, no problem, she moved it and said "the parking spaces are so small! They should make them bigger" really? Lets remodel the whole carpark for the yummy mummies!

SellFridges · 25/06/2019 18:34

Do you live in the West Midlands? Loads of people have them round here because they work for Jaguar Landrover. Not at all unusual for two per family.

GroggyLegs · 25/06/2019 18:35

I think the Range Rover has been done to death.

They are nice enough cars, but every second person has one around here and that puts me right off. I certainly wouldnt assume the driver is anything other than a regular, average person, because people get company discounts or finance.

Personally I'd much rather have a Volvo XC but BoogleMcGroogle has just indicated that's going to be the next MC must have!
Thankfully it's unlikely to be an issue for me with my choice of deeply very average company cars Grin

user1471449295 · 25/06/2019 18:35

Maybe they have them because they like them and can afford them? We have nice cars (not Range Rovers) because we like them...and can afford them, and we enjoy them for a whole range of reasons. And if anyone wants to judge someone by the car they drive, well, says more about that individual than the target of there inverse snobbery SmileSmile
Reeks a little of jealousy to me.

Crankybitch · 25/06/2019 18:36

Why do people get so annoyed over what people drive? I never notice which car someone drives unless it’s unusual.

I certainly wouldn’t look down on someone for driving a car - they like it, they buy it, it makes them happy - why should I be against that?

SoupDragon · 25/06/2019 18:36

Yeah, because only mothers drive big cars 🙄

RantyAnty · 25/06/2019 18:39

Of course people can buy what they want.

Other people are impressed by expensive clothes, cars, watches, etc. I suppose being social creatures we want to fit in and be admired by our peers and others.

I do wonder if some people do buy things they actually don't really like because it is popular? Grin

Kione · 25/06/2019 18:40

I don't think you got it SoupDragon
