What do you think of astrology?

Posting in AIBU for traffic. Not the mystic meg astrology, but birth charts, rising, sun, moon etc. I'm a Scorpio rising, Virgo cusp/libra sun and Taurus moon- after looking up what they meant they're strangely accurate Grin just curious to know!

I tend to keep an open mind about things like this. The power of belief is, on its own, a pretty powerful and very interesting facet of human behaviour.
However, and I would need to go back and check this, there was something about movement of the solar system compared to the stars we base our sun sign horoscope on. The outcome of this is that date based horoscopes don't reflect what was in the sky when you were born. For instance most of us Geminis were actually born under Cancer.
I can identify with a lot of Gemini traits but very few Cancer traits. Maybe there is something to it but its sociological rather than the influence of the stars?

Jeez, that was a bit wordy. In a nut shell, its fascinating stuff.

IDontLikeZombies · 22/06/2019 07:19

As for the moon - I'm a nurse. I work in an open access service. Mental shifts seem to correlate with full moons. Confirmational bias is probably a factor but its pretty common to open the door to leave after a particularly horrendous shift, look up at the sky and theres the full moon. Again interesting stuff.

Is there a link between the lunar cycle and psychiatric presentations?

Conclusions Although many traditional and nontraditional providers believe in effects caused by the full moon based on casual observation or anecdotal evidence, this perception was not supported in the current study. Furthermore, no evidence demonstrated increased psychiatric presentations during the other 3 phases of the lunar cycle. The study found that the lunar cycle did not have an effect on the incidence of psychiatric presentations or on the DSM-5 categories.

@phoningliz read IDontLikeZombies post just under yours. First hand experience right there.

Phoningliz · 22/06/2019 08:34

I was responding to her post starflake Confused. One person's experience vs that of 1857 people. Evidence, right there.

topcat2014 · 22/06/2019 08:38

All total bollocks, but if it makes people happy no harm done.

MissConductUS · 22/06/2019 12:11

To those who believe in astrology, does it apply to cats? I had two siblings, born at the same time and place obviously. One passed a few months ago of cardiomyopathy. The other, after an expensive echo cardiogram, we know to be in perfect shape. And their personalities and habits could not have been more different. Why would that be given their identical star charts?

And what of other animals, fish, insects and even bacteria? Surely they must be affected too.

Spaceprincess · 22/06/2019 12:37

Its total made up bollocks, but that's the typical opinion of a Pisces...

Are you thick?

Gooigi · 22/06/2019 12:46

I can usually spot a Virgo because I don’t click with them. They annoy me and I annoy them. I also get on best with air signs.

So you prejudice people based on their star signs.

Harmless fun indeed, thinking that you can fit people into neat little categories based on the circumstances of their birth. Because that always turns out well.

echt · 22/06/2019 12:48

Sorry, undermined myself there:

BasilFaulty · 22/06/2019 13:35

What i loathe the most is people who ascertain particular unhelpful and nasty traits of themselves to their star sign. Like you are some unmoving, never changing being who couldn't possibly reflect on your behaviour because 'I'm a Cancer, I'm moody' or 'That's Leo's ways, we tell it like it is. You sensitive Pisces wouldn't understand' Confused yawn

boobirdblue · 22/06/2019 13:50

Utter nonsense!

MissConductUS · 23/06/2019 00:47

Still waiting on one of the believers to opine on the cat issue...

Brahumbug · 23/06/2019 01:37

Do you realize that your so called Sun Sign is called that because the sun is supposed to be in that sign on your birthday? It isn't however, it is in the previous sign. So, if you think you are an Aquarius, you are really a Virgo. Grin

fancynancyclancy · 23/06/2019 05:13

I don’t really believe in it but a friend was very into it at uni & did my birth chart which was pretty accurate.

Interesting point about time of year & personalities. Apparently my star sign gets on well with others under the same sign & I have 4 good friends born in that month. My other good friends tend to fit into two other months. Most of my friends are from my youth to early 20s & I noticed this pattern because some months I was broke from having so many parties etc

powershowerforanhour · 23/06/2019 05:55

Load of toss packaged and sold predominantly to women.

icatcare.org (sorry no clicky link) has a good explanation of the mode of inheritance of the risk of developing HCM in cats, as far as it is known. Bear in mind that cats ovulate multiple eggs at a time, rather than one egg splitting- ie littermates are much much more likely to be nonidentical twins and have inherited a different mixture of genes from each parent.

Lifecraft · 23/06/2019 12:16

@PhoningLiz The lack of appreciation for the Scientific Approach is scary. A belief in astrology may seem harmless but the same abandonment of truth leads to shit like anti-vaxers, Trump and Brexit.

100% this. There is a serious lack of critical thinking in the world today. The biggest threat to humanity isn't climate change, or antibiotic resistance, or nuclear apocalypse. It's people believe shit that isn't true. That's the forerunner to all our other problems.

camelliavi · 23/06/2019 14:52

Basil, I'm with you on that one!

ohnoessexgirl · 23/06/2019 16:09

It's bollocks.

Yogagirl123 · 23/06/2019 16:12

I buy a personal chart from a well known astrologer, and I have to say, it is very accurate. I don’t bother with newspaper and magazine ones.

IAmcuriousyellow · 23/06/2019 16:16

Hating astrology is the only thing that unites church and science, which is fun. Vedic astrology is more accurate than western in my view because of the precession of the equinoxes thing,

How can you fall for tripe like this buy paying out actual money, assuming you are a grown adult. Why not do some research into the topic. You'll see loads of proper scientifically conducted experiments, where the same horoscope is provided to many people of different ages and birth signs, having been told it was written specifically for them, and 95% of them say how accurate it is.
