What do you think of astrology?

Posting in AIBU for traffic. Not the mystic meg astrology, but birth charts, rising, sun, moon etc. I'm a Scorpio rising, Virgo cusp/libra sun and Taurus moon- after looking up what they meant they're strangely accurate Grin just curious to know!

OP posts:
BrianniStew · 21/06/2019 19:07

Mumsnet loves a bit of moon woo.

VivienneHolt · 21/06/2019 19:08

Moon woo 😂❤️

gamerwidow · 21/06/2019 19:09

Nonsense and the definitions are always so broad they could fit anyone.
If you fit your star sign it’s coincidence and more luck than design.

ScreamingValenta · 21/06/2019 19:10

We should really be having sun woo, not moon woo, as it's the Solstice today!

Tableclothing · 21/06/2019 19:11

It's all bollocks.

Skyejuly · 21/06/2019 19:11

I love it. Its harmless fun :-)

Jsmith99 · 21/06/2019 19:11

Astrology is nonsense, of course, but so are homeopathy, spiritualism, belief in supernatural deities etc etc. People believe all sorts of ridiculous nonsense, either because they were poorly educated or because they are simply not interested in evidence, data, double-blind trials etc etc. And some people are just too thick to know any better.

Skyejuly · 21/06/2019 19:12

Ah yes. Happy Solstice Flowers

Skyejuly · 21/06/2019 19:13

I would much rather read light hearted woo occasionally than be so far up my own arse like some of the responses here.

GraceMarks · 21/06/2019 19:18

Well, according to my star sign, I am stolid, unimaginative and obsessed with food, like a fucking hobbit. Mind you, I did have an eating disorder for 20 years so ooooh, it's all true after all.

The only person I ever knew who took horoscopes seriously also used to scroll through the pictures on her phone and go "Oh my GOD look, there's orbs all over this one! And that one - look Grace look, I knew there were spirits in that room. It's probably my grandparents." So yeah, that's about the level it's on for me.

MissConductUS · 21/06/2019 19:20

Here's the Carl Sagan video PP mentioned up thread. It's excellent.

It's a prescientific belief that was replaced by astronomy. The predictions and personality descriptions are so broadly worded that they could apply to anyone.

Pa1oma · 21/06/2019 19:22

Er no. Simply saying “I am a Gemini” does not mean that you”ll have similar traits to all other Geminis. That is just your sun sign and it’s a very very broad indication of traits, just the same as if you were to say, “I am a woman” I am Korean”. What affects your personality in the various aspects of life is the position of all 12 stars at the time of your birth - eg. your rising star will largely determine how you come across to others but this is affected by the position of other stars too. I have a friend who is a very famous astrologer. If you have a proper chart drawn up, it’s actually quite astonishing.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 21/06/2019 19:24

I'm not into astrology at all but will concede that our dogs are both complete dickheads when it's a full moon without fail. I can't work out any other reason for it, so it must definitely be moon woo.

Vibiano · 21/06/2019 19:24

I don't really believe in it but I used to love reading Jonathan Cainer because he was very entertaining and witty

Badbilly · 21/06/2019 19:29

I don’t believe in astrology ( Virgo’s never do!)

RickJames · 21/06/2019 19:30

My mate is an astrologer. She doesn't take money for it. I'm a fence sitter as while she was able to relate my life with my birth chart - easy, right, she knows me. I've had her do birth charts for people she's never met (other mates that were going through a tough time) and she's been spot on with their histories, their issues, their personalities. And no, she had no names, couldn't see them on social media, they were in another country. No TV psychic nonsense. She's actually very helpful.
Mystic Meg is bollocks but real astrology is a science. I'm not going to say anything against it as there's lots of things we don't understand about the world and scientists can't explain.
My educated brain says bollocks but my experience says maybe.

Phoningliz · 21/06/2019 19:32

Mystic Meg is bollocks but real astrology is a science.

In what way?? In that it’s results are replicable?

Firstworddinosaur · 21/06/2019 19:33

Ha I was about to post the same video as MissConductUS!

Carl Sagan points out that the gravitational force exerted by the obstetrician when you were born had more influence over you than Mars or Jupiter. Medieval hocus pocus.

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 21/06/2019 19:34

I used to think it was woo but read my horoscope for a bit of a laugh... there was this astrologer who wrote for some mag I read at the time - can't remember which one - and she was so spookily accurate it was like she was reading my diary 🤣 check out Jessica Adams, she tweets about what's going on in politics and how it fits with the planetary alignment which is actually really fascinating. Also she did a blog where she predicted the WEATHER on the day of the brexit vote (remember the torrential rain) about 3/4 months before it happened! (I'm not her btw, and I don't know her! I just think she's really good at putting her money where her mouth is in terms of predictions)

Phoningliz · 21/06/2019 19:39

That’s interesting Flossie. Is there somewhere I can read her twenty accurate predictions for September?

ControversialFerret · 21/06/2019 19:58

Completely personal to you - and one twelfth of the rest of the population...

BlueJava · 21/06/2019 20:08

It's harmless fun!

Dec2019mumtobe · 21/06/2019 20:14

Loada shite

MissConductUS · 21/06/2019 20:19

Ha I was about to post the same video as MissConductUS!

I haven't seen it in years. I'd forgotten about the great background shots of midtown Manhattan. That's St. Patrick's he's in front of at the end.

Here's another classic from a Brit, Richard Dawkins.

Time twins studies, which Carl Sagan alludes to in the video, do discredit astrology as having any relability.

Comprehensive study of 'time twins' debunks astrology

Hecateh · 21/06/2019 20:26

My brain says it's rubbish.
Predictions definitely are
BUT
One year I had personality traits done for each of my 3 elder brothers. The person doing them had never met them and I didn't give her names just times and dates of birth. She produced 3 reports that she randomly allocated identifiers to. (triangle, circle and rectangle) and an sealed envelope that linked the birthdates to the shape but nothing in the report identified the starsign or date of birth.

I sent all 3 to all 3 brothers and asked them which they thought was most like them. They laughed at me but, just for fun, their wives did read them all and decided which was their husband. They were right every time.

The brothers decided it was nonsense but were persuaded by their partners to look at them and they each worked out which report was which brother.

OK, clearly chance, (far too small a sample and unscientific method) but fascinating for all that
