Ovarian Cyst?

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 19:38

DD (19) has had a pain just above her hip bone for weeks. It comes and goes but is getting more frequent and worse.

She has been to A&E as thought she had appendicitis and they did urine sample and sent her home (a few weeks ago) and she went to the GP yday.

He examined her and said it might be a cyst but he couldn’t feel anything (did an internal too).

She has to have a blood test next week and wait for an appt to have a camera thing at the hospital.

AIBU that they should be investigating this a bit more urgently?

She texted tonight saying it’s hurting again, and she never usually complains Confused

Can't help much but just letting you know I had a ruptured ovarian cyst in Feb. I'm 22. It started with really really bad bloating and pain in above belly button (centre) and then went down to my right side and became more dull. Admitted to hospital for 2 days as a precaution and put on a drip. But it all happened within one day. As far as I'm aware (likely to be wrong) but ovarian cysts are a usual part of ovulation proving they don't get too big and then rupture?

Hope she's ok!

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:00

Thank you. I am really worried about the lack of urgency Sad

She needs an ultrasound - go private if you have to but push them - I had a massive ovarian cyst - no pain, just gradual discomfort over years I think - ultra sound was conclusive ... it was Fine but I had surgery (it was the size of a 6 month foetus so huge!)
Good luck

Ovarian cysts can be hugely painful - your poor DD Flowers

The blood test might be to test CA125 - if it's raised, that's an indication there's a cyst. Mine showed up a CA125 of over 100 so a trans-vaginal ultrasound was booked quite quickly. The cyst was huge, but benign and part of a much wider problem in my case with endometriosis (lots of other symptoms with the endo besides the ovarian pain).

Hopefully if your DD's blood test shows anything unusual, they will speed up the further diagnostic tests.

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:03

How much is a private ultrasound roughly?

I am annoyed as she has done all the right things, she said she was screaming into her pillow the other night she was in so much pain.

It might be around £150+ for a private ultrasound and you need a GP referral to a private clinic. Your poor daughter, she shouldn't have to wait that long when she's in so much pain. If it gets unbearable I would definitely go back to A&E or phone 111 at the very least.

I had a ruptured ovarian cyst in my 20's but it was acute, severe pain came on overnight and I ended up in emergency surgery the next day. I'd had no pain up until that point.

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:22

I have told her to go to A&E if it gets really bad or call me and I will get her and take her xx

Private appointment can be anything from £150-250. You don't need GP referral, you can book yourself. Not sure where you are in UK but in West Midlands we have a private hospital called BMI Edgbaston (imagine there are similar all around). You can pick your Dr and be seen pretty much straight away.

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:26

Hmm I have some savings I might investigate.

Although I might try a stand off at A&E with her first Grin

Take her back to a&zebra, tell them she's been sick with the pain and keeps looking like she'd gonna pass out. Stay there till they scan.

SummerSix · 20/06/2019 20:41

A&E

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:42

Yeah I don’t think a Zebra will help in these circumstances Grin

Why haven't they done an ultrasound? I would try out of hours Dr and be v insistent. I assume they checked her temp and blood for inflammation markers to rule out appendicitis? Did they prescribe stronger painkillers?

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:49

They ruled out appendicitis, they gave her no painkillers.

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 20:51

Tbf though I have no confidence re appendicitis.

DS1 had it about 8 years ago and NHS Direct got me to examine him over the phone and diagnose him Hmm

I went to OOH recently with similar unbearable pain and was given 30mg of codeine to take 2 daily and when I was still in pain 4 days later and went back to my own GP I was sent straight to MAU. Even the consultant at the hospital said that the fact I was normally well but I'd presented to 3 different medical staff (pharmacist first, OOH GP, Own GP) within the week showed them it was something to be taken seriously so please do make sure she goes back.

Iamnotagoddess · 21/06/2019 21:57

Update - DD texted me on the bus home from work today saying she now felt really sick.

Told her to phone 111 and she made an appointment at the OOH clinic at the hospital. I picked her up and took her.

Dr thinks it’s appendix (I don’t as they have already given her a blood test for that and it came back clear - however I don’t have a medical degree).

I am taking her to the ward at 10am tomorrow morning and they are potentially going to remove her appendix but I am going will give her a bloody ultrasound and have a look to see what exactly is going on!

Thanks all Wine

Your poor daughter - shocking treatment. And wtf was the internal for in the days of ultrasound/CT scan Stay with her as you plan - do I understand she is def going to have an US tomorrow before they do anything? That really must happen - I’m so angry on your behalf as I had exactly same symptoms, went through 111 and into A and E and had CT scan within a few hours - they never hesitated. This led to US and then MRI and then surgery.

Iamnotagoddess · 21/06/2019 22:26

I am going to start getting a bit shitty tomorrow, it’s hard though as she is an adult and obviously she sees the doctor alone.

I had a cyst and the time scales were the same, blood test then internal ultra sound, Dr was already pretty sure it was a cyst.
Mine was golf ball size, they wouldn't touch it and said it would go on its own. So don't get hopes up about them removing it unless it's massive, not sure what the criteria is.
It had gone when I went back for follow up scan weeks later.
I've been admitted with suspected appendicitis twice since then, nothing found by the time investigations were done but I'm sure it was cysts bursting that caused me the pain.
Nurse said ovulation can cause cysts to form and they burst once the egg gets released.
I've got an implant now so no ovulation and no cysts.
Glad she's being seen.
