Ovarian Cyst?

DD (19) has had a pain just above her hip bone for weeks. It comes and goes but is getting more frequent and worse.

She has been to A&E as thought she had appendicitis and they did urine sample and sent her home (a few weeks ago) and she went to the GP yday.

He examined her and said it might be a cyst but he couldn’t feel anything (did an internal too).

She has to have a blood test next week and wait for an appt to have a camera thing at the hospital.

AIBU that they should be investigating this a bit more urgently?

She texted tonight saying it’s hurting again, and she never usually complains Confused

When I have had a scan on the NHS I was told at the scan that everything was fine.

jenny well mine wasn’t so that wasn’t an option☹️

When I was 17 for months I had back and stomach cramps. At first I thought it was a bad kidney infection, I had them for years and experienced similar pain. Like your dd I was in agony. I had to wait ages for an ultrasound. They found something in my pelvis area but could not do an ultrasound. After tons of blood tests they decided to operate. Urgent gynae referal so I was operated on within 2 months. They found a large dermoid cyst on my ovary, (the size of an orange) it was removed. But from initially complaining of the pain to surgery it was probably 4 and a half, 5 months so I definitely think you're doing the right thing going private. Hope your dd has some answers soon and feels better! 💐

So sorry to hear that Bourdic

jenny thanks - it’s all fine now - just relieved I didn’t have to wait for weeks with all the pain and worry. But hate the fact that other women have to.

Go to your daughters GP with her & ask for an NHS choose & book referral to a gynaecologist at your local private hospital, she will get seen as quick as a private appointment, be treated at the private hospital & get it done a lot quicker than an NHS hospital but NHS pay. I had to when I had an ovarian cyst after being fobbed off by A & E & OOH. I know lots of mumsnetters don't approve of queue jumping but your daughter is in pain & needs this sorting out.

I've had 2 ovarian cyst experiences. The first I experienced 3 episodes of intense abdominal pain that came on with no warning, would pass out and/or vomit. These would last a few hours then disappear. GP was happy enough to refer but gynaecologist tried to say it was period pain 🙄 and wasn't willing to scan me...after pushing they agreed to ultrasound which revealed a dermoid cyst which had been causing tortion. It grew rapidly and was removed about 3months later along with the ovary and tube. Many years later I had exactly the same pain (was devastated as thought there goes my other ovary and fertility 😢) but this time it turned out to be a cyst that had ruptured and left a little blood in the pelvic cavity. No problems since 🙏🏻
So I had 2 medically different ovarian cyst issues which to me felt the same. Really hope your daughter gets her scan soon whatever route you take and get sorted out 💐

Glad to hear you are pushing for further tests, OP. Ovarian cysts that are symptomatic aren't something to be messing with.
A couple of years ago, I had an ovarian cyst that eventually ruptured. I had been to the GP for pain and unusual bleeding, but was given ABs for a UTI Hmm One evening, the pain in my right hand side became so unbearable, I was literally bent double. Rang OOH, who told me to go straight to A&E.
In A&E, they did a blood test which showed I had an infection, and also an internal exam which showed I had some internal bleeding from the ruptured cyst. I spent about a week in hospital, nil by mouth and on an AB drip, whilst they fought the infection and monitored the bleeding to ensure I didn't need surgery to stop it.

I hope that your daughter is okay Thanks

Of course this needs to be investigated. But just to let you know OP that most woman have an ovarian cyst at some point, and for most it does resolve itself and no treatment is needed. So hopefully your DD will be in this category.
