Ovarian Cyst?

Iamnotagoddess · 20/06/2019 19:38

DD (19) has had a pain just above her hip bone for weeks. It comes and goes but is getting more frequent and worse.

She has been to A&E as thought she had appendicitis and they did urine sample and sent her home (a few weeks ago) and she went to the GP yday.

He examined her and said it might be a cyst but he couldn’t feel anything (did an internal too).

She has to have a blood test next week and wait for an appt to have a camera thing at the hospital.

AIBU that they should be investigating this a bit more urgently?

She texted tonight saying it’s hurting again, and she never usually complains Confused

I had her symptoms and it was a 10cm Dermoid cyst on my ovary. She needs an urgent scan to diagnose whether it’s that or anything else.

Iamnotagoddess · 21/06/2019 23:25

I fully intend on not leaving until she has a scan tomorrow.

jennymanara · 21/06/2019 23:40

I am not sure why you think it should be more urgent? I am waiting this long and I am of the age where it might be cancer.

Iamnotagoddess · 21/06/2019 23:42

Because I am worried she either has a cyst or an appendix that is going to burst?

OP posts:
Iamnotagoddess · 21/06/2019 23:43

And she is in a lot of pain and I don’t know if you have a child and you have seen them in pain - but it’s actually really shit.

I had a cyst and when I finally went to the doctors with excruciating pain it was 6 weeks from Dr's appointment to surgery including ultra sound and MRI. I had presented at the doctors 6 months previoulsy and was told on 3 occasions it was constipation (also had to get emergency doctor out on holiday, I think that occasion could have been a rupture but I was lucky as no obvious side effects from that)

My GP thought I was 6 months pregnant when I went in to his surgery, my cyst weighed 4lb and was 20cm in diameter.

Definitely ask for the ultra sound just to rule it out, but if she lies on her back and can feel anything strange in her abdomen make sure everyone knows tomorrow. Good luck

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 00:03

@Iamnotagoddess Apologies I was out of order. Hope she is okay.

Bourdic · 22/06/2019 00:04

So the argument is ‘ I have to wait so you should as well’? Nice

Threesoups · 22/06/2019 00:11

No one with abdominal pain should have to wait for medical attention. Medical treatment in the UK is shit. Hope it goes ok tomorrow and definitely demand an ultrasound.

Bloodless · 22/06/2019 00:14

Your poor DD. Not medically qualified but my wee boy had emergency surgery a few weeks ago to remove his appendix.

Pain was so severe he collapsed in a&e. A blood test suggested that it could be appendix but surgeon told me they wouldn't know for sure if it actually was his appendix until they opened him up and if it wasn’t that they would investigate further during the surgery. I don’t know if that’s any help to you at all OP but that’s all I can offer. Unfortunately the doctors you have encountered seem way to lax.

Hope your DD feels better soon xx

ladylunchalot · 22/06/2019 00:45

Hope you and your dd get better treatment than we've experienced this year. Dd is 12 and has had stomach pain (lower right side) every day since January and the professionals still don't know what it is.

We've had to fight for every scan and blood test and referral to consultants. Poor dd has been hospitalised 11 times since January, last visit was last week. She's also developed mastitis.

We're all exhausted and dd has missed out on so much this year, think she's managed 3 full weeks of school since January.

Good luck, hope she gets diagnosed and treated v soon.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 22/06/2019 00:54

You're a great mum. I had similar and my family in their stoic way told me it was nothing to worry about really and not to make a fuss. Long story short got sent to A&E by the GP, had an ultrasound where they saw 'an abdominal mass', was admitted, one CT scan later and I had a 15cm dermoid cyst. It wasn't treated as an emergency but I did have surgery about 6 weeks later (it's only now I'm realising that is urgent in terms of how fast elective surgery takes place on the NHS). I was in a lot of pain and it came in bouts of 2-3 days of intense agony, constipation, I was white as a sheet and couldn't sit still due to pain. I now know that was torsion - the cyst was twisting my Fallopian tube and killing my ovary. I lost both ovary and tube but it didn't affect my fertility. Anyway good luck to your DD and I hope she gets sorted tomorrow

Iamnotagoddess · 22/06/2019 00:58

I had “growing pains” in my legs for two years aged 14-16x

I was in agony and struggled to walk.

Eventually a doctor suggested it was referred pain and sent me for an MRI.

I had a huge tumour at the base of my spine.

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 01:02

Growing pains is different though. Most people who go to the GP have fairly minor things wrong with them, and if their symptoms initially suggest something minor then it is right to diagnose them with that. Growing pains are incredibly common.

BitOfFun · 22/06/2019 01:08

She's in the right place. I hope you get some rest Thanks

EMacCoffee · 22/06/2019 01:35

Hope your DD gets on ok tomorrow. Definitely insist on a scan.

Pretty sure I had one rupture once and it was agony. They are definitely related to ovulation as I'm now on the pill and have had no more problems.

OneStepSideways · 22/06/2019 10:26

I've had a ruptured endometrioma cyst twice, both times the pain was sudden, intense and I struggled to walk or move as it hurt so much. My abdominal muscles seized up too. I had bloods in A&E that showed raised inflammatory markers, then an x-Ray (to check for free fluid) and finally a TV ultrasound. They kept me in overnight on morphine and by the next day the pain had eased and I went home. I had to wait another 6 months for surgery! My cysts had leaked a small amount of blood into my pelvic cavity, causing peritoneal irritation and the intense pain.

If it's a simple cyst (not endometrioma or dermoid) it's unlikely they will operate as most simple cysts eventually resolve by themselves.

Ovarian torsion usually causes severe pain that doesn't come and go, it's unlikely she would have this and still be going about her daily activities.

Have the surgical team reviewed her for possible appendicitis?

Iamnotagoddess · 22/06/2019 18:55

Hmmm Sad

So we spent for hours waiting at the surgical assessment unit this morning.

DD was seen for about 5 minutes by two (perfectly lovely) surgeons who ruled out appendicitis and said DD will have to wait for an appt for an ultrasound in the post.

Feel so sorry for DD Sad

OP posts:
Iamnotagoddess · 22/06/2019 18:55

They definitely think it’s a leaking cyst ..

OP posts:
OneStepSideways · 22/06/2019 22:06

At least they've ruled out appendicitis (and presumably other life threatening conditions). Did they check all her clinical signs (heart rate, sats, temp, blood pressure etc?)

It's a shame they didn't scan her though. A TV ultrasound only takes about 20 mins! Most gynae wards have one in their treatment room. When I was admitted for a ruptured cyst I got to gynae ward around 2am and the kind register did a scan straight away.

Iamnotagoddess · 22/06/2019 22:07

No and I have decided to pay for her to go private Sad

OP posts:
Lonecatwithkitten · 22/06/2019 22:13

DD had similar symptoms several doctors ruled out appendicitis - she got her ultrasound and guess what it was appendicitis not the classic abscess, but the lower grade mesenteric lymphadenopathy appendicitis. The appendix got removed and her pain went away. All at the hospital that is the European centre of excellence for appendix disease.

AshQ · 22/06/2019 22:16

Hope she’s ok.
I had to wait a few weeks for a scan to find out I had a cyst.

WhyDoesItAlways · 22/06/2019 22:48

Have the ruled out other potential causes? I only ask because I went to A&E with similar pain and the suggested appendicitis and even went as far as to tell me that if I was a bloke the pain could be one of two things but because I was female it could be anything. So they gave me morphine and sent me on my merry way saying it was "probably period pain".

Turns out it was kidney stones.

Bourdic · 22/06/2019 23:29

You are doing the right thing OP to have the scan privately - sorry as I am it’s necessary for you to have to pay. In my area, none of the private hospitals will do a scan without a GP’s referral letter - I don’t know if you’ve checked this yet given it’s the weekend. Another advantage of a private scan is that you’ll get the results sooner - mine were sent to my GP within a few days. Good luck- hope things get resolved soon
