To be disappointed with a veggie only menu?

Chewbecca · 19/06/2019 14:44

We booked an event at our local wine shop ‘summer Mediterranean supper club’. £45 for 3 courses including paired wines. Menu tba.

Event is tomorrow and the menu has arrived today and it is 100% veggie. I do enjoy veggie food but can’t help but feel a bit ‘short changed’ and my committed meat eater DH is really unimpressed.

It is a fab venue with great owners that always put on a good evening.

AIBU to be disappointed?
Would you tell the venue you were a bit disappointed?
If you would, how would you say it, terribly nicely?

Thanks.

I can’t think of many vegetarian dishes I would happily choose to eat. I don’t eat vegetarian food.

Yeah, I don't believe that.
You always have meat for breakfast?
No toast, no cereal, no crumpets?

alligatorsmile · 19/06/2019 16:23

I don't eat vegetarian food

Aye ye dee. You just eat meat as well.

adaline · 19/06/2019 16:24

@Yabbers really?

So you don't eat toast? Cereal? Macaroni cheese? You never eat cake? Or scones? What about crisps or chocolate? All of those foods are vegetarian. What about margarita pizza? Or cheesy chips?

Of course you eat vegetarian food - it's just you think of it as "food".

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/06/2019 16:25

I don’t eat vegetarian food.

Lol. I would love to see a daily menu for someone who doesn't eat vegetarian food. Breakfast alone - do you honestly never eat breakfast cereal, or toast and marmalade, or yoghurt, or pastries? Just sausages, bacon and black pudding every day?!

jennymanara · 19/06/2019 16:25

Some people would not have 3 course that are vegetarian.
Although that menu is not vegetarian either.

LaurieMarlow · 19/06/2019 16:25

Yeah, that's disappointing for £45. Also, wine works better with meat/fish so the wine pairings not much of a draw in the circs. I'd complain.

SinkGirl · 19/06/2019 16:25

People saying it’s too expensive would hate to see the price of the paired wines when I went to Le Gavroche last month! The wines were more than most meals I’ve had in the last few years (not getting into the food cost!)

At any restaurant here (not London), those three courses would easily cost you £25

I take it they’re not a restaurant, just a wine shop? I wouldn’t have expected any more than this to be honest

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/06/2019 16:25

X-posted with everyone who also rolled their eyes at that statement.

herculepoirot2 · 19/06/2019 16:26

I probably would have expected lots of vegetables but a fish main. YANBU.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 16:27

@LaurieMarlow
I'm guessing they are using wines which pair well with cheese... of which there are many

jennymanara · 19/06/2019 16:28

But you have to be keen on cheese and not everyone is. I am not.

Thertruthisoutwhere · 19/06/2019 16:29

I like nice veggie food but that's not it.
Far too much cheese! I often chose veggie options but expect them to be properly thought out not any old cheese and pastry

In india their veggie food is varied and tasty not overpriced bland food.

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:29

@TheInvestigator

Goats cheese salad? Macaroni and cheese? Nope. Can’t eat Pasta. Don’t like goats cheese

Mozzarella sticks and salsa dip. Nope, hate salsa, mozzarella makes my teeth squeak raw and is insanely greasy cooked.

Cous cous? Pea risotto? Lentil soup? Sweet potato soup? Literally thousands and thousands of good without meat.... Nope. Would eat none of these.

Do you not eat vegetables?, Fruit? Salad? as part of a balanced meal, sure.

Bulgar wheat? Pulses? Nuts? Nope. Hate them.

Do you literally eat meat alone for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Bacon roll, tuna sarnie, chicken salad. Sure, why not. I might often swap the bacon roll for cereal. I wouldn’t have thought a bowl of shreddies counts as a meal you’d see on a menu.

Cheese on toast? Margarita pizza? Tomato soup? I’d eat these if there was nothing else on offer, but I wouldn’t particularly enjoy them. Also not something I would expect as a main meal I’m paying someone to provide.

So, as I said, I don’t eat vegetarian food.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 16:32

Then what you call a balanced diet isn't a balanced diet. It's processed meat for breakfast and then meat, meat and more meat. Maybe one or 2 portions of veg or fruit. Sounds like a great diet for a healthy heart Hmm

deydododatdodontdeydo · 19/06/2019 16:33

You have bacon roll every day?
I think that's pretty rare that someone eats meat for every meal.
It's not at all healthy.
Also, I wouldn't consider cereal and milk or toast and butter to be vegetarian food as such, just food.

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:35

What about margarita pizza? Or cheesy chips? Cheese on toast

You do realise most cheese isn’t vegetarian?

crisps

Many of which aren’t vegetarian.

cake

Minefield too here, not all cake is veggie.

Of course you eat vegetarian food - it's just you think of it as "food".

Ironic given much of what you listed is actually “food” and not necessarily vegetarian.

PickAChew · 19/06/2019 16:35

I would be pretty ill after that amount of cheese and other dairy. I would be more disappointed in that than the lack of meat.

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:36

You have bacon roll every day?

I don’t eat breakfast every day.

VivienneHolt · 19/06/2019 16:37

Yabu - no reason why it should contain any meat at all, especially when so much amazing Mediterranean food is vegetarian. Just because it isn’t personally catering to your preferences doesn’t mean you have any right of recourse.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 16:38

VivienneHolt, but this isn't amazing med food. It's cheap med food... and it's cheese, cheese and cream. There should be fresh produce and something to break up the cheese!

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:39

Then what you call a balanced diet isn't a balanced diet. It's processed meat for breakfast and then meat, meat and more meat. Maybe one or 2 portions of veg or fruit. Sounds like a great diet for a healthy heart

You have no idea how balanced it is, nor how many portions of anything I have every day. You are making a judgement because it makes you feel better. Is it really so offensive to you that someone might do something differently to you?

Yabbers · 19/06/2019 16:40

Then what you call a balanced diet

I said balanced meal, do try to keep up.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 19/06/2019 16:40

@Yabbers

Most cheese is vegetarian (although this didn't used to be the case).
Most crisps are vegetarian, although a few may not be.

I assume you'd check every pack of crisps to make sure the flavouring had animal extract in and avoid the (vast majority) of crisps that don't?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 19/06/2019 16:41

There is only one menu for all...

Have your friends been before? Is this menu similar to previous occasions? If its very different then I would ring up the wine shop and express some surprise and disappointment. Not outrage, but it's not a well-balanced menu and it's not especially summery or Mediterranean either. Tell them that on this basis you probably wouldn't book again in future. You might not be the only ones.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 16:42

Bacon and bread isn't a balanced meal.
I just think it's very sad, and also bloody ridiculous that you refuse to eat so many foods just because vegetarians eat them.
