To be disappointed with a veggie only menu?

We booked an event at our local wine shop ‘summer Mediterranean supper club’. £45 for 3 courses including paired wines. Menu tba.

Event is tomorrow and the menu has arrived today and it is 100% veggie. I do enjoy veggie food but can’t help but feel a bit ‘short changed’ and my committed meat eater DH is really unimpressed.

It is a fab venue with great owners that always put on a good evening.

AIBU to be disappointed?
Would you tell the venue you were a bit disappointed?
If you would, how would you say it, terribly nicely?

Thanks.

It sounds okay but not amazing. Stingy wine pours though!

BertrandRussell · 21/06/2019 10:53

So only 250ml of wine all together? That’s really mingy!

Food sounds lovely, though.

BertrandRussell · 21/06/2019 10:54

I’d expect half a bottle per person.

ShatnersWig · 21/06/2019 10:57

I wasn't impressed with the menu to begin with but I assumed you'd get a decent amount to drink at least. Sorry, I think that was a rip off.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 21/06/2019 11:00

The menu was uninspiring to begin with but the fact you had hardly any wine at an event hosted by a wine club is unforgivable. I would be leaving a disappointing review it honestly doesn't sound anywhere near worth the £40 per head they charged you.

TheInvestigator · 21/06/2019 11:08

So it sounds like they didn't want to open more than one, maybe 2, of each bottle of the wine! That's not even a standard small measurement. I think I would be leaving a bad review for that. Nothing wrong with veggie food, it's just food, but it needs to be good. And you really need a proper glass of wine with each course.

Yes, I reckon 1 250ml glass overall, more was required... and available to purchase.

I won't leave a bad review but when I next visit I will take the opportunity at some point to let them know in person.

I'd have no issue with a vegetarian med menu but that menu is poor.

Obviouspretzel · 21/06/2019 12:26

Just seen update, wine very very stingy.

Okeycokey1 · 21/06/2019 13:24

Jeez I’d be more pissed off about the wine.

LaurieMarlow · 21/06/2019 14:18

Food sounds nice enough now you’ve described it. The wine was stingy. Doesn’t sound like good vfm, I wouldn’t return.

NewSchoolNewName · 21/06/2019 14:53

I’d have expected more wine than that from a wine shop event.

I think that would annoy me more than a menu I wasn’t keen on.

BlueSkiesLies · 21/06/2019 14:58

You should leave a fair review. Warn other people. It doesn’t have to be nasty just factual.

“Attended the med wine pairing supper club. Slightly disappointed, menu lacked imagination and although the wine choices were very tasty we were only given 125m total wine. Felt like this wasn’t great value for £40 pp”

OralBElectricToothbrush · 21/06/2019 15:09

I agree with Blue, I don't see what's unfair about leaving an honest review.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 21/06/2019 15:18

I'm another who agrees with Blu. You don't have to be unpleasant but by leaving a review you might help others decide if the event is worth attending in future. It is obvious that the menu might change for each event but the lack of wine is likely to be just as much of a problem for the next couple who book so to give them a heads up would be a kind thing to do.

BertrandRussell · 21/06/2019 16:29

I think with the update the menu sounds really nice. I would leave a poor review for the quantity of wine, though. Two and a half tiny glasses is just not OK.

Zbag · 21/06/2019 16:46

Did the other guests enjoy it?

OralBElectricToothbrush · 21/06/2019 16:48

It's so dairy heavy, that menu, but then I could never go for a tba menu as I'm lactose intolerant. But the wine was stingy.

Chewbecca · 21/06/2019 17:58

I’m definitely not leaving any reviews, it is a small local business that I love, if there is anything to be said, it should be said directly to the owners IMO.

Sounds OK-ish
Hefty starter, basically deep fried rice stuffed with cheese, and the fact that they got cheese / dairy into yet another course makes me think they are not good at building a menu.

No excuse for wine stinginess.

Thatsnotmyname4291 · 21/06/2019 18:10

I always find it a bit odd when people can’t go a single night without meat or fish being the staple part of their meal.

I’ve been to so many restaurants with tasting menus where the veggies have been prepared superbly, and the ‘main’ of meat or fish has been such a letdown - plain and dull, with little done to enhance the flavours.

That said, I would find the overkill of dairy a bit much. Arancini are fab but as a PP said, definitely more of a street food.

£45 pp seems like ok value considering that wine is included. I wonder how well the wines will complement the food, given that arancini is very much a food usually eaten with a coke or lager.

Thatsnotmyname4291 · 21/06/2019 18:14

Ugh, just actually read the full thread and seen that you’ve been!

They served dry bread - no oil or vinegar? A bit weird. Glad the rest was nice - snorted at ‘boursin on a biscuit’ 😂😂

zwellers · 21/06/2019 18:21

I'dont be very disappointed to op. Those food options sound horrible espec if you not keen on cheese. And given the price you have paid too. Have they sent you the veggie menu by mistake

Aaarrgghh · 21/06/2019 19:24

The amount of wine given is surprising. Definitely makes the meal to expensive for what you got.
