To be disappointed with a veggie only menu?

Chewbecca · 19/06/2019 14:44

We booked an event at our local wine shop ‘summer Mediterranean supper club’. £45 for 3 courses including paired wines. Menu tba.

Event is tomorrow and the menu has arrived today and it is 100% veggie. I do enjoy veggie food but can’t help but feel a bit ‘short changed’ and my committed meat eater DH is really unimpressed.

It is a fab venue with great owners that always put on a good evening.

AIBU to be disappointed?
Would you tell the venue you were a bit disappointed?
If you would, how would you say it, terribly nicely?

Thanks.

As a vegetarian, I'd have expected a bit more in the way of vegetables. It seems a bit of an odd menu, as if they're trying to please everyone bar the vegans. I wonder if the wine is vegetarian?

BrylcreamBeret · 19/06/2019 15:14

Ahh I see. The feta cheesecake results I had all suggested a sweet plate rather than savory. Will there be sides to go with it? It does seem quite a steep price :/ I the hope the wine is incredible. If they bring out Blue Nun you need to have serious words.

Chewbecca · 19/06/2019 15:21

feta cheesecake recipe it is really nice! I would normally serve it on a buffet or something... with some meat or fish options...

Sure the sides will be good.

Seems a bit steep for what is essentially some cheese and a bit of rice, no matter how delicious it is.

jennymanara · 19/06/2019 15:22

YANBU. If it is an all veggie meal that should have been advertised. And feta cheesecake does not sound yummy at all.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 19/06/2019 15:22

I think it sounds lovely but I do think they should have indicated this in advance, esp for that price unless it is very Fine Dining. I would also have expected the main at least to have a meat or fish option alongside the feta thing (which could be awesome) Omnivorousness is the norm, still, afterall. I say that as a vegetarian with vegan tendencies.

PuffsMummie · 19/06/2019 15:22

I agree, although it sounds lovely it's going to be cheaper for them to produce than some options with meat or fish. I'd be disappointed and I would have to say something as well.

Even if just one of the dishes wasn't vegetarian, that would be fine.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 19/06/2019 15:24

though is feta cheese cake kind of just glorified quiche?

Babymamamama · 19/06/2019 15:24

Totally wierd menu. Arancini is a streetfood snack from Sicily. No idea if the feta cheese cake would be a savoury main course or a sweet desert. And semi fredo is like an Italian angel delight (although obviously much posher). Too much dairy and no clear main course.

jennymanara · 19/06/2019 15:26

I too think it is a weird menu.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 15:27

It seems like a cheap and cheerful menu. So I hope the wines are good! The veggie thing shouldn't be an issue; as long as he good tastes good then who cares if it's got meat or not? You wont be any less full. Your husband shouldn't need meat in every single meal to enjoy it.

luckygreeneyes · 19/06/2019 15:28

I hate cheese, it’s pretty much the only think I really detest, I’d be gutted at cheese then cheese then cream

LadyRannaldini · 19/06/2019 15:30

What's the problem with having one vegetarian evening?

Would you say to a vegetarian What's wrong with having a non-vegetarian evening?

Your comment smacks of the arrogance that endears food-faddists to the rest of us.

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 19/06/2019 15:32

I think if the menu was much better then you would be being unreasonable but as precious have said, that is very dairy heavy and sounds cheap. There’s so much - like fresh pasta filled with asparagus and pecorino which are veggie yet special and a tonne of desserts. I’d be disappointed

OralBElectricToothbrush · 19/06/2019 15:32

Far too much dairy, weird and cheap. I'd be very unimpressed. What's their cancellation policy? That's too much money for basically cheese with Angel Delight. Yuck.

Starlight456 · 19/06/2019 15:33

I would be disappointed . I do eat veggie sometimes but consider that to be my cheap nights to save buying meat . Unless I was going for a vegetarian restaurant I would never buy a vegetarian meal .

I go out for something special and for me that involves meat

Nothingsuitsmelikeasuit · 19/06/2019 15:34

I wouldn’t mind the vegetarian menu aspect but that’s is a lot of dairy based food and not what most people would think of when they think of Mediterranean food, I wouldn’t have thought. The sides and wine would have to be very good I think to pull it together well.

pelirocco123 · 19/06/2019 15:35

I would love that , so many times the only veggie/ vegan option is a plate of chips lol
My vegan meal at a lunch event I attend every meal was last week
A tin of butter beans in a tin of tomatoes with a few bit of what tasted like boiled onions , I was not happy
especially as I had told them please don't give me baked beans

joystir59 · 19/06/2019 15:39

Get a life OP! A veggie meal isn't a poor option- it is FOOD! I'd be really happy with that menu. I eat anything and everything.

Chewbecca · 19/06/2019 15:41

Not cancelling, am not sufficiently peed off to not go & I know I will enjoy the evening; we’re going with friends. Haven’t told them yet, they will be more disappointed than me!

Glad to hear I am not the only one feeling a bit disappointed with the menu, and have now pinned it down to feels cheap, doesn’t feel like summer in the Med and not well balanced.

Caterinaballerina · 19/06/2019 15:41

Have you checked they haven’t made a mistake and sent you the veggie option menu? You said you booked when the menu was still to be confirmed but someone veggie would have to mention that so they may have two variations of the menu?

Chewbecca · 19/06/2019 15:42

joy this is my life - wine tasting and supper clubs Grin

Xmr1986 · 19/06/2019 15:43

You're there for the wine, not the main menu. The dishes are to compliment the wine not the wine to compliment the food. Yabu.

TheInvestigator · 19/06/2019 15:44

@LadyRannaldini

That's not the same thing at all. Vegetarians restrict their diet, so giving them meat would be giving them something an item their diet does not allow. Omnivores don't restrict their diet; they eat meat and veg. When you give them a meal without meat, you're not giving them something they restrict from their diets. You're just giving them food!

A vegetarian cannot have meant one time because that is not allowed in their diet. A meat eat can have a vegetarian meal because that is allowed in their diet. Completely different situations.

You need to hang-out in a slaughter house for a while.
