To believe in the powers of the full moon?

When teaching, my old headmistress who is the least woo person in the world said the kid's behaviour deteriates at full moon.
I cannot sleep well during a full moon and i believe it is evolutionary as humans gad to be more alert when predators gad good visibilty...and my goodness, there were some arseholes on the road today!
Plus more babies are born on full moon and my period coincides with it. Aubu?

YANBU. A full moon on a night shift made for a busy one on labour ward. Always told my students to work on those nights if they were low on their numbers.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 17/06/2019 20:17

Definitely. I'm an RMN and having worked nights for years, I dreaded full moons. Always busy, chaotic nights with mor unsettled and agitated patients.

PCohle · 17/06/2019 20:18

Well I certainly don't believe it.

There's been quite a lot of research into it -
www.bbc.com/future/story/20131029-does-a-full-moon-make-people-mad.

Yogagirl123 · 17/06/2019 20:19

I agree, one of my DS’ was born on a full moon, rapid birth and he has a very lively personality. More sales also made around a full moon, I have noticed.

MissBehaves · 17/06/2019 20:23

Yanbu

chitofftheshovel · 17/06/2019 20:26

There is definitely a reason why lunar and lunatic have the same start (and take away my knack for using proper English terms)

ShinyMe · 17/06/2019 20:28

I'm sure the moon has an effect.

The wind does too - ask any primary school teacher.
I worked in Switzerland years ago and whenever the Foehn blew everyone went crazy.

BouncingBanana · 17/06/2019 20:31

That is where the word lunatic came from, the lunar cycle.
When i was an RMN many years ago, the patients became more unsettled and agitated during the full moon phase.
More so during the night of said phase.

theorchidwhisperer · 17/06/2019 20:31

Years ago I was 10 days overdue. I called the labour ward to ask to be booked in for induction, and was told no, I couldn't be booked in yet as it was a new moon approaching. I really thought someone was pulling my leg! I'd never heard this before.

And then, I went into labour on the full moon, so it seems did every other woman near their due date.we were in corridors on trolleys as no beds were available in post natal ward.

Total madness but I'm told the lunar cycles do very much influence the female body.

theorchidwhisperer · 17/06/2019 20:33

Typo, full moon not new moon.

Sewrainbow · 17/06/2019 20:35

Apparently research has disproved this theory but many people disagree, especially in hospitals!

Like many old wives tales i reckon there is probably some truth in it, like the fact that lunatic has the same word root

SweatyUnderboob · 17/06/2019 20:35

It’s not too crazy a leap of you think about it. The gravitational pull of the moon controls the earth tides... the human body is 70% water... shrug

Also women think their cycles sync up but actually they are all syncing with the moon.

Certain animals lay eggs on a full moon. Farmers used to plant seeds on a full moon... I could go on and on...

Ohyesiam · 17/06/2019 20:38

At the end of my nursing training one of my fellow students did some research into painkillers using drug charts of patients who had been on surgical wards. They were Not looking for this information, but over a period of two years the need for pain relief increased by 2 to 300% at full moon compared to all the other nights. All four wards had very effective blinds, so it was not about the moonlight keeping people awake.

FartMachine · 17/06/2019 20:38

Yanbu. I’m sure there’s something in it even though I realise there’s lots of evidence to disprove it. I used to work nights in a nursing home when I was at uni. 90% of the times it would be pretty easy, everyone asleep and no issues. Full moon and everyone all awake and I’d be constantly running around like a mad thing sorting people out.

haverhill · 17/06/2019 20:41

Years ago a friend who worked in a crisis centre told me they were paid extra for working ‘full moon’ shifts.

Zbag · 17/06/2019 20:43

I absolutely believe in the powers of a full moon. My periods are synced with the moon and both of my children were born on a full moon. Mother nature is always in control!

Chickpearocker · 17/06/2019 20:44

I find this fascinating so I am following

GrimSisters · 17/06/2019 20:47

Well, if my kids' behaviour this evening is anything to go by I certainly wonder if the moon is to blame!

cardibach · 17/06/2019 20:48

I’ve been a teacher for 30 years, and I think it does affect behaviour - though I agree it’s unscientific.
This doesn’t make sense though Sweaty: Also women think their cycles sync up but actually they are all syncing with the moon. If they were syncing with the moon they’d all be the same already, there would be no shift when women live together.

Papergirl1968 · 17/06/2019 20:50

Yep, I used to work as a police staff member and full moon nights were always busier than normal, in terms of fights etc, especially if the full moon coincided with a weekend.

Runmoreorless · 17/06/2019 20:52

Yes, I'm sure it's true. It controls the tides, and something that powerful must affect other things too

So much of the old legends turn out to be based in fact

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/06/2019 21:01

Full moon = lighter night, more difficult to sleep, easy to see when you're out and about therefore more likely to be wandering aound and get into fights?

shesgrownhorns · 17/06/2019 21:03

My father (a prolific wife beater and all round charming man) used to be at his most violent when there was a full moon. My mum and I used to dread it.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 17/06/2019 21:10

I work in A&E.

I most certainly believe it. I guarantee I will have a horrendous shift when it is a full moon.
My police officer brother agrees.
