... to not tell my militantly vegan friend she ate fish sauce?

I am a relaxed vegan, as are one of my kids, the other kid and my partner are mostly vegetarian. Basically what that means for me is that I would never spend my own money on animal products, and I wouldn't use them in my own cooking, but if someone else prepares food for me or I'm a guest in someone's home I'll eat what's put in front of me, for the most part - I won't have a sausage or a burger at your barbecue, but I'll eat the pasta salad even if has cheese in it, and I'll have some of your birthday cake even if it's made with eggs.

Anyway, my friend Alice- who is a militant, rather than a relaxed, vegan

  • was over and I heated up what I confidently thought to be vegan sweet potato and black bean chilli that my partner had made earlier in the week. I know the recipe backwards and forwards because one of us makes it at least once a month with zero animal products so I had no reason to suspect otherwise. I must say it was especially delicious this time - because, as it turns out, my partner added some fish sauce because he'd read somewhere that it's good in chilli. I didn't find out until today and now I'm wondering if I should tell Alice? I can't decide if, in her shoes, I would want to know or not. Would you?

because they need to have special label

Projection much? Yes we get it you are fabulous and so much better than OP.

Love vegan threads!
I have vegan friends who for the most part don't give two shits about the treatment of animals etc. They do it because it's their lifestyle choice, it's healthy, they believe it helps them maintain their weight and taking care of their body from the inside out. Veganism and vegetarianism is not just about being eco-friendly, saving the animals and all things ethical.
Not everything is so black and white.
proof of real militant vegans

toomanyleavesonthattree · 16/06/2019 18:43

You sound a bit judgey about your friend if you describe her as 'militant' just because she is consistent in her diet.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 16/06/2019 18:43

And OP, no don't tell her.

Christmastree43 · 16/06/2019 18:43

Why does moving to a more vegan approach have to be so arrogant and elitist?

Totally agree @woollyheart also you vegans love to be special don’t you where’s the inclusivity or praise for a people trying their best to follow your general rules, benefiting themselves and the environment hugely?! Why does it attract such vitriol? Is it because you like to be different and special 🧐

diddl · 16/06/2019 18:44

"Op thought it was vegan, but it wasn't supposed to have fish sauce in it."

Yes, but that's because her & her partner are both so "relaxed" about being vegan/wvgetarian.

He didn't think to tell her that there was fish sauce in it, which I would have thought would be important to vegans.

Best thing in future might be to not feed vegans unless you've cooked it yourself!

S1naidSucks · 16/06/2019 18:44

Anyway, I’m off. I’ve an ACTUAL VEGAN meal to cook. (yes I’m putting that down again and don’t give flying fuck if you think I’m ranting)

Snuffalo · 16/06/2019 18:45

I see a consensus - I tend to err on the side of being TOO honest, and I think I'll keep this one to myself.

For those of you bent out of shape because I dared to use the word vegan to describe myself - 'relaxed vegan' is just a shorthand way to say that I have made the moral choice for myself not to financially support the meat and dairy industries, but I don't expect other people to go out of their way to cater for my personal moral choice. I also think that letting prepared food with meat or dairy to go to waste is more of a moral wrong than eating it, so, as long as it's not a big chunk of flesh (barf), I'll eat it. You can draw your own moral lines where you want, but getting all het up about what vegan REALLY means is a makes you sound like a child who can't understand shades of grey and the flexibility of language.

thethethethethe · 16/06/2019 18:46

It's not a religion, FFS.

toomanyleavesonthattree · 16/06/2019 18:46

Maybe there needs to be a new word for eating animal product free 90% of the time........oh wait it's relaxed vegan!

I heard the term vague-on, which I quite like.

tuxedocatsintophats · 16/06/2019 18:46

Won't someone please think of the children and share the recipe Grin?

SolsticeBabyMaybe · 16/06/2019 18:47

I can't think of any advantage of telling her.

I think my reaction would be to remember next time not to serve something I didn't cook personally, as husband isn't vegan.

thethethethethe · 16/06/2019 18:48

Even if it was religion - if a Muslim eats non-Halal meat by mistake they've done nothing wrong.

S1naidSucks · 16/06/2019 18:48

what vegan REALLY means is a makes you sound like a child who can't understand shades of grey and the flexibility of language.

There are no shades of grey! You’re either a vegan, follow a vegan diet or an omnivore. What is the point of using a word to describe yourself when it’s not actually true. You might as well say you eat meat every day, but not on a Friday, so you’re vegan. You’re not! Right, I’m definitely away now.

Windyone · 16/06/2019 18:49

@LivingDeadGirlUK yes sorry I did jump on the OPs terminology. I am definitely not a vegan but I am very involved with food. I get fed up with smug social media posts and people saying they are vegan just to be trendy, posting pictures of avocados from goodness knows where (then eating eggs and cheese).
Im sure the OP was using local sweet potatoes and black beans 😀

Hithere12 · 16/06/2019 18:49

Wow, some omnivores really hate vegans, don’t they? Or are there more assholes going around pretending to be vegans, than I initially thought

Hate vegans who act like you? Yep. You are putting people off and doing damage to your cause.

Pinkmouse6 · 16/06/2019 18:49

You can say ‘I’m mostly meat and dairy free’. Veganism means something different to ‘mostly avoiding meat and dairy’. They also won’t touch animal byproducts or things tested on animals.

Snuffalo · 16/06/2019 18:49

@S1naidSucks I thought you said you were off? Please don't let us keep you.

Gosh, I was right about your how judgemental you are.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/06/2019 18:51

Poor vegans; they used to be so special and now everyone is having a go.

PregnantOnPurpose · 16/06/2019 18:52

Oooooh please tell her.

I've always wanted to tell me extremely strict vegetarian aunty that Worcester sauce is made with fish. Cant bring myself to do it though.

Hithere12 · 16/06/2019 18:52

Bloody right I am! 😇

No you aren’t you’re a cliche toxic vegan.

Windyone · 16/06/2019 18:53

@pinkmouse6 Yes! That’s it exactly
