To ask what to do about Boris

I get how it works. We elect parties to reporesnt ya. Their members elect their leaders.

But I feel so strongly that I do not want Boris Johnson to represent Britain as our leader.

Yet I feel so powerless and like an observer watching the Tory party elect someone because of internal politics that has nothing to do with good leadership, integrity and actually leading the country.

What are the options for action open to us?

The postal vote inquiry is only into 3 complaints, we'll see what the outcome is. Just like we did when we saw investigations ( and sub subsequent fines issued) for Conservative election fraud.

It is interesting that the Brexit party split the vote in Peterborough, because it was thought that it would split the Labour vote.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 13:57

Good point about Peterborough often having vote rigging allegations.

itwaseverthus · 20/06/2019 13:58

I'm a Conservative and would vote Boris on the basis someone has to take over and he is saying he will deliver Brexit. If there is a general election and still we are in the EU, I will vote TBP, no question.

Peterborough appears to have been rife with electoral fraud. I wouldn't get too comforted by the Labour win there as an indication of anything.

🎶 How do you solve a problem like Boris? How do you catch a clown and pin him down? How do you solve a problem like Boris, how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand? 🎶

Lol you still believe in democracy 🤣🤣🤣
Even when we get a vote, it's a vote for people already handpicked for us to choose from. Who cares if Boris is PM? He will get his instructions and told to get on with it. No different to May, Cameron, Brown, Blair...etc. You should be more worried about how attached you are to a system that benefits the world's elite and nobody else.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:16

Are we forgetting @TFBundy that the Tories were accused and in some cases received convictions and fines for electoral malpractice in 2015?

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:17

BTW there has been a complaint about Conservative votes too.

itwaseverthus · 20/06/2019 14:17

I'm struggling to believe in democracy, not least because of the attitude of the losing side to thwart the result. The tories were just as bad. But as you say JQ, no different to Brown, Blair etc. They're all at it.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:21

Can I ask why people think Boris will be a good negotiator?

I think the EU would let him him take us into a no deal situation.

Alsohuman · 20/06/2019 14:21

@TFBundy, I live near Peterborough. I struggle to think of any election at any level there when there haven’t been allegations of vote rigging. Locally it’s seen as a joke.

LellyMcKelly · 20/06/2019 14:23

He’s a knob, but we’re stuck with him. I give him until Christmas.

NCforthis2019 · 20/06/2019 14:24

What to do? Nothing you can do. He’s going to win. Then we wait and see what he does.

There was a conviction in Thanet for election expenses fiddling, and I think about 14 other electoral fraud cases put forward to the CPS.

Police have already said that no offences were committed in 3 of the cases in Peterborough, they are continuing to investigate two.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:30

"The force said no offences were revealed in respect of one allegation of bribery and two allegations relating to postal votes."

Postal votes also vary vastly,

"The proportion of postal voters also differs among English regions: at the 2015 general election, it ranged from 13.4% in the West Midlands to 26% in the North East. The highest proportion of postal voters was found in the Houghton and Sunderland South constituency (43.3%); the lowest in Birmingham Perry Bar (7.4%).[2]"

researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/CBP-7419

So Peterborough isn't even the constituency with the highest amount of postal votes, as % of the entire vote.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:37

Glad we cleared up that the postal vote fraud and bribery allegations have been investigated and resulted in the police deciding no offences have been committed.

There was a Conservative conviction for electoral expenses fraud.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 20/06/2019 14:39

Evidently, what with 1 in 3 people voting by post and ballot papers going at £10 a pop.

Did anyone see Richard Ratcliffe is on hunger strike now because his wife Nazanin is still unfairly imprisoned in Iran? www.nytimes.com/2019/06/19/world/europe/zaghari-ratcliffe-hunger-strike-iran.html

If you ever think Boris is a ‘harmless buffoon’ just think of Nazanin and her family whose sentence was increased after Boris said she was in Iran training journalists. Angry To me he seems like the paramount of privilege. He has always been cushioned from the consequences of what he does so he doesn’t take anything seriously or realise that as a politician he affects real people’s actual lives. He would be a terrible prime minister.

The80sweregreat · 20/06/2019 14:42

One thing I've not heard anyone mention recently is that Boris did vote for Theresa May's withdrawal agreement on its third outing.
Now his threatening no deal/ new deals and all the rest.
I'm still a bit confused ; unless the 160,000 voters will change everything.

Zipee · 20/06/2019 14:43

@justanotherposter the bribery and postal vote allegations were investigated and police said no offense had been committed.
