Why can't I say people's names???

ikkkp · 15/06/2019 17:28

This seems so weird. I've never said my mums name, never called her 'mum'.
My ex used to call me out that I never said his name in years.
Now current DP has made a comment about me never saying his.
It's something that I feel genuinely uncomfortable with - but it only seems to be people close to me, I'm fine in passing!!!

Is there something wrong with me? Confused

What do you call them?

If you're calling up the stairs, what do you say?

I've worked with a few teenagers with ASD that have difficulty referring to people by name.

WhiteRedRose · 15/06/2019 17:30

So do you call them "man in the green jumper" or "babe" or "sweetie" or what? What do you do when you need to call them from another part of a house? Confused

justbeniceplease · 15/06/2019 17:31

I am exactly the same. I just say what I have to say. Never call DH his name. Never called my mum or dad that either. But ok with more distant people.

ikkkp · 15/06/2019 17:32

I can say their name in conversation with other people. Otherwise if we're in the house I shout 'hey!' or 'what you doing?' or anything like that etc. usually only one on one in the home so never need to specify! I know it's weird!

Wtf?Confused

Tigger03 · 15/06/2019 17:34

I’m the same! No idea why - same at work as well. I’m fine with people I don’t know we’ll, but anyone I’m close to saying the name feels weird!

MissAi · 15/06/2019 17:35

I was like this. Then I just started forcing myself to do it and now it's fine. Grin

justbeniceplease · 15/06/2019 17:35

wtf?

Well that's helpful Confused

Whatsyournameagain · 15/06/2019 17:36

I am the same but no one has commented on it to me, it never occurred to me it might be weird!

Seeingadistance · 15/06/2019 17:36

Like a pp, I thought of ASD when I read your post.

I do call people by their name, but only when I need to, I suppose. I dislike it when people call me by name just for the sake of it, during conversation.

MotherTime3 · 15/06/2019 17:38

I’m similar. I would use the name if I had to shout to another room, or when talking about someone, but otherwise no. I also find people who use my name during conversation with me a bit weird. You have my attention, why do you need to use my name?

Barnabyboy · 15/06/2019 17:38

My mum never called my dad by his name. Ever.

CaptainMyCaptain · 15/06/2019 17:38

I find it irritating if people keep saying my name when they talk to me and I never do it.

UserFriendly14 · 15/06/2019 17:39

I mostly do this with DH. More often than not if I need his attention it's "Hello?" or honey. TBH I hate it when he says my name too.

hammeringinmyhead · 15/06/2019 17:40

I say "Erm," wait for eye contact then speak. DH is Babes. I hate using names too!

miaCara · 15/06/2019 17:48

Me too. Strangely its not everyone Im close to but quite a few . Also Ive always been uncomfortable with people who say my name when talking to me. It gives me a weird sense of ...anxiety? Dunno but odd anyway.
Dont know if its connected but Im curious about those people who can immediately put face to name - for example when turning a corner in an office I meet another person and they immediately say "Hi Mia, how are you today?" By the time they have gone I might have mumbled some sort of reply but no way on par with their greeting. It will take me a good minute or so to remember their name though.

cheesewitheverything · 15/06/2019 17:56

This is brilliant, I thought it was just yet another quirk in my own relationship but me and DH are like this. If he ever says my name I know it's an emergency. For instance, we were once pulling a tree down together and it caught his ear, he thought it was ripped off so he shouted my name. I knew it would be a hospital visit as soon as he did that!

Proseccoinamug · 15/06/2019 17:57

Me too! Diagnosed ASD though.

cheesewitheverything · 15/06/2019 17:58

Not remotely ASD here, it's just an intimacy thing somehow. Too close maybe. We call both kids by nicknames usually as well.

MogMogMog · 15/06/2019 18:04

My husband never says my name... he's diagnosed ASC too!

Toodleoopuddle · 15/06/2019 18:11

I'm the same, never say my dh name. My parents haven't ever called me by name either so I try to use my kids names.

PotatoesDieInHotCars · 15/06/2019 18:17

Oh wow I had this exact conversation with my DP recently too. He asked me why I never call him by his name. I don't really know why tbh. It could be an intimacy thing like someone else suggested. I think if he had a nickname it would be easier but his name is too short and I can't bring myself to use "hunny" or "luv".

And I don't know if it's related but he's the only person that calls me by my full name. I kinda hate it haha. Everyone else uses my nickname. Even his friends! But it's been well over a year so it's a bit late now to say "Hey...you. Would you mind not calling me by my full name. I have no reason."

sergeilavrov · 15/06/2019 18:17

Thank god this isn't just me. I also find people saying my name a bit scary, like I'm in trouble - it makes me a bit anxious.

usernameuser · 15/06/2019 18:38

Oh my, I thought it was just me. I literally have to force myself to say my dh's name (was the same with previous boyfriends too) WTH?? 🤭

Sewrainbow · 15/06/2019 18:42

I always thought it was weird that my mum and dad never called each other by their names. I literally never heard my dad call mum anything. My mum called him "honey". Me and dh uses each other's names and the children's. I refer to him as "my dan" just as so many people I know have partners of the same name.
