I don't want to live in a world where we are all censored

You don’t get to tell other people what’s funny. Sorry to break it to you.

They have tried to, that is the pendulum is swinging back.

It's a shit show where the vocal right are holding the vocal left to the same standards that they have tried to set.

bluebell34567 · 13/06/2019 22:08

i find it worthless really isabella Grin

RomanyQueen · 13/06/2019 22:11

Free speech has gone to political correctness. You can't speak for fear of upsetting someone, it's been like this for a long time.
We moved into being told what we think a while ago.
Soon, we'll all be manipulated, and will be pointless trying to resist.
Happy futures.

I’m glad you acknowledge your shortcomings.

She's allowed to say it. People are allowed to criticise.

Agreed. But free speech shouldn’t be a left/right issue...

derxa · 13/06/2019 22:15

I was on a thread recently where someone was implying that she wished Farage hadn't escaped unscathed from a plane crash. There's a nastiness on social media and in society atm which is unprecedented. It's everywhere and it stinks.

IsabellaLinton · 13/06/2019 22:19

@bluebell34567

Look sweetpea, you started it! At least I can argue the issue. You don’t.

bluebell34567 · 13/06/2019 22:21

well done to you and happy for you Isabella. the end again.

BluePheasant · 13/06/2019 22:21

It wasn't exactly one of her best moments but the uproar is ridiculous. Farage is absolutely loving it as it puts him as a victim and the lefties as the bad guys. It's all such a bloody pantomime.

IsabellaLinton · 13/06/2019 22:22

@derxa

That’s awful. I dislike his politics but I don’t wish harm on him. The nastiness is so boring because it’s lazy. No one has to debate an issue or defend a position, it’s all endless name calling and character assassination.

Dapplegrey · 13/06/2019 22:24

BluePheasant what did you think of the Nazi pug?

jasjas1973 · 13/06/2019 22:30

The assumed target of her joke was Farage, who has promptly complained, as is his right.....
The same Farage who said he would take up a rifle (against the state) if brexit didn't happen....so inciting civil war.

Acid attacks have been happening long before any comedian made jokes about them, comedians reflect society, they don't drive behavior..... unlike Farage, who has stirred the racist and nationalist pot with gusto and with impunity.
I ve often wondered if Jo Cox would still be alive if it weren't for the self serving politicians who have driven brexit and thats no joke.

Justanotherlurker · 13/06/2019 22:33

Dapplegrey

Not who you asked, but the context was a hard line socialist with the hammer and sickle tattoo openly admitting turning his beloved dog evil.

It was funny in context, he didn't deserve to go through the courts for it, and it is the left that has swung him to being somewhat alt-right now.

Bad taste yes, police intervention no, funnily enough he has come out in support of brand, the problem is that the alt right supporters now want this law applied uniformly and it's the left who are now using the same context, nuance arguments without a hint of irony.

derxa · 13/06/2019 22:34

I ve often wondered if Jo Cox would still be alive if it weren't for the self serving politicians who have driven brexit and thats no joke. Jo Cox's sister has commented publicly tonight on this matter. She said people should consider their words carefully.

SkiingIsHeaven · 13/06/2019 22:39

Can you imagine what she would say if a Tory man suggested that people throw acid in her face.

AhhhHereItGoes · 13/06/2019 22:49

I think in the toughest times humour is what saves us.

Ultimately we combat fear with humour.

I think if someone mentions a specific person, invites others to actually go do something or they themselves do the act then freedom of speech should be upheld.

However, this may mean others judge you for your humour/lack of tact etc. Once it's out there it's now up for anyone's interpretation.

hilbobaggins · 13/06/2019 22:51

As free speech disappears down the plug hole it seems entirely reasonable to me that if Count Dankula (nazi pug) and Sargon of Akkad (wouldn’t even rape Jess Phillips) are being investigated by police, then Jo Brand should be too.

Lougle · 13/06/2019 22:54

I love satire, but I think there are lines. I once went to a stand up comedy show with some colleagues and we sat in the front row. The comedian, on stage, asked what we did for a living. We said "we're intensive care nurses". He started to warm up for a joke and then said "actually no" and changed the subject. He came up to us in the interval and said "there are some things you just can't joke about, and intensive care is one of them. It just wasn't right to make fun of saving lives."

I think he was very self-controlled, because there's a lot of bleak humour in medicine, it's how people survive the constant exposure to tragedy.

IsabellaLinton · 13/06/2019 22:55

I ve often wondered if Jo Cox would still be alive if it weren't for the self serving politicians who have driven brexit and thats no joke

So Jo Cox’s murder isn’t the fault of the person who actually murdered her, but a bunch of politicians?

hilbobaggins · 13/06/2019 22:57

Or maybe one halcyon day we can get back to the world of sanity in which no comedian is ever investigated for a bloody joke. Remember those days? Happy times.

SidekickSally · 13/06/2019 22:58

I agree with free speech but this comment was distasteful.
I agree with some other posters - a few years ago it probably would have gone unnoticed but with politics as it is today, plus the current issue with acid attacks, plus the threats of violence that alot of politicians get nowadays the comment or "joke" was not thought through and irresponsible.

Hithere12 · 13/06/2019 23:04

Would you find it funny if a Brexiteer comedian joked about throwing battery acid on Remainers?

hilbobaggins · 13/06/2019 23:05

I disagree that “there are some things you can’t make jokes about”. Nothing should be off limits. I watched a video recently of a woman who was talking about the way in which being able to laugh and joke about sexual assault and rape with a friend helped her to survive and recover from her rape. It was really interesting to hear that perspective. She said that people who were all “you can’t joke about rape, it’s too serious” made her feel much worse. She didn’t want anyone deciding what was and was appropriate for her to laugh about.
