I don't want to live in a world where we are all censored

We're getting there. But she should have been more aware and it was a daft thing to say.

Nanny0gg · 13/06/2019 18:07

Well then that goes for the Bernard Mannings and Jim Davidsons too, yes?

SophiaLarsen · 13/06/2019 18:08

What did she say?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 13/06/2019 18:09

Nannyogg

Yes, it does.

codemonkey · 13/06/2019 18:10

I doubt anyone will be too worried. It's only Farage complaining isn't it? And he only does it to keep himself in the media.

RabbityMcRabbit · 13/06/2019 18:11

In the interest of true free speech, that should therefore apply to everyone, even those you may not like or agree with...

MyOpinionIsValid · 13/06/2019 18:11

And you'd hold the same opinion if a male comedian suggested an acid attack on a female politician would you ?

Jo Brand is a psychiatric nurse by trade, she should know better

Sirzy · 13/06/2019 18:12

I think this has highlighted the serious double standards that are found across this topic. If someone is well loved they can get away with anything

AlaskanOilBaron · 13/06/2019 18:12

I actually quite like Jo Brand (although I disagree with her politically) and think it wasn't a big deal, although I can only imagine the uproar had it been Nigel Farage saying that someone should throw acid on hard left protesters.

Everyone likes to score points over this kind of stuff, it strikes me as a distraction from matters of more importance.

zippey · 13/06/2019 18:12

She said throwing milkshakes over politicians she disagrees with was pathetic and they should throw battery acid instead.

AlaskanOilBaron · 13/06/2019 18:13

I doubt anyone will be too worried. It's only Farage complaining isn't it? And he only does it to keep himself in the media.

No, there's rather a lot of discussion about it by now.

endofthelinefinally · 13/06/2019 18:14

Remember Jo Cox.

PositiveVibez · 13/06/2019 18:15

I hate the way people who didn't listen/watch a show jump on the bandwagon and bay for blood.

Shall we demand a police enquiry into every comedian who says something deemed offensive?

CareBear50 · 13/06/2019 18:16

I get really angry that diff people are judged by diff yardsticks. So it's okay for her to say it ??? but if a right winger said it they'd be vilified. I think in the wake of awful acid attacks it shouldn't be said by anyone in a public forum.

herculepoirot2 · 13/06/2019 18:17

No, not funny.

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 18:18

I truly believe that free speech should be just that. But then I don't know where we put the line?!

We cannot go around policing comedians, they're suppose to shock and amaze.. that's their raison d'etre... including all the ones that I find offensive and frankly, shit.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/06/2019 18:18

I like her, but that is an awful “joke”. Joking about acid attacks? Ha bloody ha.

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 18:19

@CareBear50 I think everyone should be able to joke about anything and everything in the interests of humour and free speech.

OP posts:
noleftturn · 13/06/2019 18:20

@ThroughThickAndThin01 People have joked about the holocaust!

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/06/2019 18:20

Well I think you’re wrong op. No lines drawn? Ok to joke about disabled people? Fabulous idea.

BenWillbondsPants · 13/06/2019 18:20

Well, I'm a big fan of Jo's, but I think this comment was, at best, misjudged.

There are some things when there really isn't a grey area. Acid attacks are not funny and never will be.

Smokesandeats · 13/06/2019 18:21

She should apologise, even if she didn’t mean to cause offence, because it was an inappropriate joke.

Op, would you feel the same if she made the same remark about Jeremy Corbyn? Or Sadiq Khan?

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 18:21

That's what I'm struggling with.

Where would we draw the censorship line? It's a very scary thought. Reeks of 1984

OP posts:
BenWillbondsPants · 13/06/2019 18:22

People have joked about the holocaust!

That hardly makes it OK. What about rape? Child abuse? Is that ok to have a good laugh about?

noleftturn · 13/06/2019 18:22

For the record her joke was just boring and low-brow. I don't for one minute believe she would actually like politicians to be attacked with acid
