What effect does alcohol have on you?

I know it's a weak AIBU

Majority of the time I am left feeling nauseous, slightly uninhibited (sometimes leads to public crying) and lightheaded. Not sure I really get a buzz just a sluggish/murky feeling. Is this a normal experience? It's not particularly pleasant if I'm honest.

It makes me happy, chatty and sociable, even more so than usual!

iklboo · 12/06/2019 22:19

I've said it on another thread. I go through several dwarfs:

Bashful
Happy
Dopey
Sleepy
Grumpy

TheInebriati · 12/06/2019 22:19

Thats not normal for me at all. The thing is, all alcohol does is remove your inhibitions. So if you are trying to put a brave face on things, you lose the ability to do that.
Its also possible to be allergic to alcohol.

How do you feel about going to see your GP for a chat?

Bluerussian · 12/06/2019 22:20

Makes me drunk and ill.

Saavhi · 12/06/2019 22:25

I have considered the possibility of being allergic. I only drink 1/2 times a week in social settings. Not sure why as I don't particularly enjoy the taste or effect. I think I would have no problem giving it up but is a bit of a "marker" to unwind/relax

Is it normal to feel almost instantaneously hazy/lethargic?

OP posts:
Chesntoots · 12/06/2019 22:28

It makes me have a very bunged up nose. I can't drink it close to bedtime or I wake not being able to breathe and with a massive headache.

I think I have an intolerance to certain chemicals in some alcoholic drinks.

GertrudeCB · 12/06/2019 22:29

Are you on any prescription medication OP?
I have a chronic pain condition and have to manage my medication very carefully if I want a drink or I can just cook out or vomit .

GatsbyWasntGreat · 12/06/2019 22:29

Makes me lose my anxiety and I'm able to chat and be confident. I LOVE tipsy me.

I don't drink often at all because I think I'd lean on it! Instead I've had CBT for anxiety and I've learnt how to be more social when sober.

Sounds like an intolerance for you, OP?

  • conk out. Drinking on medication doesn't make me barbeque Grin
Chillijamntuna · 12/06/2019 22:31

Even one shot glass of wine gives me an intense Hangover for a while week!

ChristmasInJuly · 12/06/2019 22:32

After the first few sips I get an ache in my thighs. Really really odd. Never met anyone else who experiences this. One drink makes me feel relaxed, two glasses very tipsy. I haven’t been drunk for years but I suffer awful hangovers if I overindulge. I don’t think I have the gene that helps process / breakdown alcohol.

Missillusioned · 12/06/2019 22:34

I don't enjoy the sensation either OP. I feel queasy very quickly, before I even feel drunk. And I don't get euphoric. I mainly just feel light-headed and a bit panicky. I don't drink any more - it isn't pleasurable.

Houseonahill · 12/06/2019 22:34

Drinking on medication doesn't make me barbeque

I love mumsnet tonight

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 12/06/2019 22:34

Well I usually get drunk and tell everyone I love them.

MoMandaS · 12/06/2019 22:34

Do you have Asian heritage? There's a certain enzyme which processes alcohol that some people don't produce.

TheInebriati · 12/06/2019 22:37

Is it normal to feel almost instantaneously hazy/lethargic?

No it isn't. Do you buy the drink yourself? Is there any possibility its been spiked?

Prettypetal85 · 12/06/2019 22:44

I used to love a good drink. It would make me feel a lot more fun and chatty (I’m usually quite anxious in social situations so would drink to make it easier to deal with).

Since I’ve had my baby and have a decreased tolerance it just makes me feel rubbish. I will only have one drink because I’m BF but it makes me chatty for about 5 minutes then tired for hours after. Not worth it!

PookieDo · 12/06/2019 22:49

If I have not had a drink in a while half a glass of wine will make me feel fuzzy. I have had a hot face but I don’t know what has done it iyswim

I used to have a high tolerance for alcohol but after a few very unpleasant ‘gone too far’ nights with vomit and severe migraine hangover and anxiety I do not binge drink anymore

I only drink what I like the taste of and nowadays it just makes me feel a bit sleepy so then I go to sleep!

The last time I went out out got a bad headache whilst I was out, drinking beer. Wasn’t even drunk but I can’t really drink much beer at all for this reason but I do like it

Standingonlego · 12/06/2019 22:53

Depends what I drink Grin

BillywigSting · 12/06/2019 22:53

I reckon I might be allergic or have some sort of intolerance to wine (or something in it)

Had four glasses of wine over 3 or four hours on Saturday night, was fine then throwing up violently, then was puking all day Sunday with a thundering headache, dizziness, red face, hot and cold sweats and very painful stomach cramps, normal feeling hangover on Monday plus sore guts. Still felt crap yesterdayand even today still have a very tender abdomen with the most atrocious wind, and it's only today I've started to feel hungry again.

I çan drink five or six gin and tonics and have nothing more than a bit of a dry mouth and a very slight headache the next day. Nothing an alker seltzer and a strong coffee wouldn't fix.

While I'm drinking, I tend to go from chatty and animation, to totally fearless, to feeling like I'm walking through treacle and a bit melancholic. I try to stop before the melancholy as by that point I've definitely drank too much.

Ohyesiam · 12/06/2019 22:56

Most alcohol feels like poison in my system. Yes to all the symptoms you describe.

BillywigSting · 12/06/2019 22:59

It is poison! Quite literally. Ethanol is metabolised into aldehydes which are pretty poisonous. That's why hangovers feel so awful.

There is nothing quite like a wine hangover though. They make you want to not exist anymore because existing is pain.

BummyKnocker · 12/06/2019 23:00

Chilled, happy tipsy, drunk, morbid, obsessive thoughts, guilty, sick, self hatred is the journey.

Two drinks gets me to tipsy, can't always stop at 2. 3 is drunk, 4 is verging on morbid.

If I get too drunk, I will throw up.

SluggishSnail · 12/06/2019 23:05

Billy
I am the opposite of you. I can drink wine very happily (not proud of this, but can drink a bottle on a work night and be fine in the morning).
On the other hand, spirits are a nightmare for me and Prosecco hangovers are another level, beer is ok if it's only 1 or 2.
Each to their own, I suppose.
