What effect does alcohol have on you?

I know it's a weak AIBU

Majority of the time I am left feeling nauseous, slightly uninhibited (sometimes leads to public crying) and lightheaded. Not sure I really get a buzz just a sluggish/murky feeling. Is this a normal experience? It's not particularly pleasant if I'm honest.

I’m a lot more relaxed, chatty, sociable and fun when drinking. I’m also a lot nicer when I’m tipsy because when I’m sober I’m judgemental. I prefer tipsy me to sober me but as I have a 1 year old it isn’t worth the hangover so I don’t drink very often any more.

Walkerbean16 · 12/06/2019 23:16

I don't really drink ever but if I do, eg i had a gin and tonic on a weekend away i get an intense pain in my chest like i am going to have a heart attack.

Its not just spirits, any alcohol really - even cider etc.

BillywigSting · 12/06/2019 23:17

@SluggishSnail there are different compounds in different types of alcohol (obviously or they would all look /taste the same), I guess we are just sensitive to different ones! Though prosecco is just as bad as wine for horrendous hangovers for me. I have no trouble with beer at all, though that might just be because I struggle to actually drink that much of it in the first place because of the sheer volume of it. Four pints is an awful lot more liquid than four spirits plus mixers

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/06/2019 23:18

After about 3 drinks I just get excessively sleepy. I've been known to excuse myself from company and go upstairs for a mid party nap.

PookieDo · 12/06/2019 23:19

I can drink Prosecco with no hangover really. Only a few reds I can tolerate, beer not really (v sad about that) but I can’t drink normal white wine, instant headache

I don’t drink spirits I don’t really like them

BlackPrism · 12/06/2019 23:21

I either go from 0-100 real fast, don't remember anything but know I woke up at home or I get chatty and uninhibited until I'm sleepy.

Depends on factors such as where I am, which alcohol, what I've eaten and how hydrated I am. I hate the former

happyhillock · 12/06/2019 23:25

I'm a bit of a light weight when it comes to alcohol, 2 glasses of wine and i need to go to sleep

funinthesun19 · 12/06/2019 23:27

It makes me very confident/chatty and happy and energetic. When I’m sober I’m an introvert, but when I’ve had alcohol I’m the complete opposite.
But then after a while I sometimes hit a slump and start being very weepy and sad. I usually start going on about stuff that’s bothering me or stuff that bothered me in the past. By that point enough is enough and I need to go to bed.

My body does not cope well with alcohol and I feel very ill the next day. I don’t really like the stuff to begin with anyway and all of it just tastes rank. If I do drink it I have to mix it with a soft drink e.g. wine and lemonade. When I’m drunk though I don’t really care about the taste because I can’t taste anything, so will drink anything by that point.

thenightsky · 12/06/2019 23:46

After the first few sips I get an ache in my thighs. Really really odd. Never met anyone else who experiences this

Until now @ChristmasInJuly

That's the first thing that happens to me. Always after about 2 mouthfuls. After the first glass is finished the ache has gone. Weird.

goose1964 · 12/06/2019 23:52

Sleepy, could do with a gallon of vodka now

happymummy12345 · 12/06/2019 23:52

Nothing really. I have a very high tolerance and never get drunk unless I'm drinking to get drunk (I'd have to drink a lot to get actually drunk, and I've never not been able to remember what's happened).

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 12/06/2019 23:53

It increasingly makes me negative and nasty and it takes me days to recover from even a couple of glasses.

I given up drinking it.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 12/06/2019 23:54

I've

JeSuisPrest · 12/06/2019 23:55

There's about 3 sips of wine between chatty, sociable slightly tipsy me and head back on the sofa snoring and drooling fast asleep me. It's a very fine line Grin

toriathet · 12/06/2019 23:58

couldnt say as ive been teetotal my whole life(38) and have never even had a sip of any thing alcoholic

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 12/06/2019 23:59

Tipsy, my worry over small talk/do people find me interesting/god I hope I don't say the wrong thing etc goes and I'm chatty and fun, basically the way I am with my close friends.

But too much and the room spins, I feel sick and spend the wee hours hugging the toilet feeling vile so I don't let it get to that point anymore. I've always been like that though, I start the hangover the night before!

SisyphusHadItEasy · 12/06/2019 23:59

Me... Just tired.

userxx · 13/06/2019 00:00

@GatsbyWasntGreat It takes the edge off it temporarily but you will pay the next day. Wine feeds anxiety.

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 13/06/2019 00:04

Everything becomes funny for a while and then I fall asleep.

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 13/06/2019 00:17

I can drink a bottle of wine in an evening and just have a mild fuzziness the next morning that clears pretty quickly.

When I used to drink spirits my nose would go numb after a bit, and that was my cue to stop. Also couldn't read after a few spirits; it felt like my eyes were looking in different directions!

Moodwise, depends what I'm doing. Some DVDs make me cry then I get really maudlin, or I might hear an old favourite song and before I know it it's disco classics full blast on YouTube while I dance the night away, which I wouldn't do "sober". But I rarely feel drunk.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 13/06/2019 00:19

I used to be able to drink brilliantly! I was a funny, happy drunk and my hangovers lasted a max of half a day.
Now all it does is give me a headache and leaves me feeling nauseous for 2 days after.
It's not worth it so I've stopped.

JaceLancs · 13/06/2019 00:25

I get more chatty after a few
Then I get sleepy and go to bed

pineapplebryanbrown · 13/06/2019 00:35

Well before I gave up I was your common or garden completely hilarious Hmm traffic cone and kebab type of drinker.

LackOfAdhesiveDucks · 13/06/2019 02:25

I feel much the same as you, OP. After only a little (like half a glass of wine) I feel lightheaded and ‘fuzzy’, which I assume is what you mean by murky/hazy. I only drink maybe 1/2 times a year, I really dislike the feeling. I’ve never really drank, even in uni. I’ve wondered if I have some sort of sensitivity as it seems to affect me differently than others.

IAmNotAWitch · 13/06/2019 02:42

Relaxed and a bit louder/more chatty. Followed by sleepy quite quickly.

I don't get "drunk" anymore, a couple of glasses socially with water in between and I am quite happy.
