Posting here for traffic
So basically last year I started on sertraline for anxiety and depression and ever since I have been piling on the weight.
One area I'm particularly conscious of this my stomach and how I look pregnant.
What should I do??

Go to your GP. Review your medication and check for other causes.

MrsSpenserGregson · 11/06/2019 15:29

Have you done a pregnancy test? Have you had PIV sex in the last six months or so?

Yes, it looks similar to a pregnant stomach BUT I had exactly the same when I took amitryptiline (sorry for the spelling) which is another anti-depressant which is also prescribed for pain relief (I have RA and fibromyalgia). I only took one dose and my stomach ballooned just like yours .... so I stopped taking it. So I guess it could be the sertraline. Have you discussed with your GP?

How old are you? There are other more concerning causes for abdominal distension - I don’t say this to worry you, but it was the first symptom my mum had of ovarian cancer. In that case it’s caused by fluid building up in the abdomen so it doesn’t go up and down like bloating.

Please talk to your doctor about it just to be safe.

Singlenotsingle · 11/06/2019 15:34

My dsis had an extended stomach due to ascetes, result of drinking too much wine.

Imoen · 11/06/2019 15:35

My best mate has EXACTLY The same - she often gets mistaken for being pregnant.

She has what I would call a beer belly if it were on a bloke.

Hers started when she was put on anti depressants.

She's been tested for everything and last year had very early stage cervical cancer - and was ruled out for ovarian and other nasties.

It just is what it is.

She also drinks far too much which is the cause but its weird the wway its just gone on her stomach and no where else.

Baby bump would make your belly button stuck out! Separated stomach muscles make you look like that.

Whackitupto200 · 11/06/2019 15:41

Definitely worth investigating with the GP.

My friend had this and it turned out to be an enormous (but thankfully benign) cyst on her ovary.

HollowTalk · 11/06/2019 15:46

My belly button didn't stick out when I was pregnant.

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 15:48

My bellu button didn't stick out in pregnancy either

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 15:48

Belly*

ShiveringCoyote · 11/06/2019 15:58

No sticking out belly button when I was pregnant. Go to your gp, could be a side effect or it could need investigation.

PrimalLass · 11/06/2019 16:01

Baby bump would make your belly button stuck out!

Mine never did.

ElizaPancakes · 11/06/2019 16:02

My belly looks like this. I’m just fat.

I think it really depends on the rest of your body and also whether or not there is actually a possibility of pregnancy.

steff13 · 11/06/2019 16:02

My belly button didn't stick out either, in three pregnancies.

My mother looked like that when she had an ovarian cyst the size of a football.

QuimReaper · 11/06/2019 16:06

That looks pretty uncomfortable OP. Does it feel tight?

ChewbaccaHutchinsCool · 11/06/2019 16:10

Sorry, but I don't think it looks like a baby bump.

jarhead123 · 11/06/2019 16:11

I take sertraline and amytryptiline and noticed weight gain though if honest with myself its because I was eating shit.

Shock horror - started eating better and am losing weight!

Anyway, yes your stomach looks pregnant - could it be IBS/bloating?

CaMePlaitPas · 11/06/2019 16:13

My bump looked similar to that both times, my belly button never stuck out. I would definitely talk to your GP.

DrCristinaYang · 11/06/2019 16:13

Thanks all for your replies so far.
I'm definitely not pregnant but I've definitely put on a lot of weight in the last year or so.
I have been worrying about ovarian cancer etc but I'm only 19 so it is unlikely.
I have the GP next week to see about going off the sertraline and frequentish vomiting.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/06/2019 16:14

I had the same issue when I was on anti depressants. I was really slim before, and put on so much weight but just on my belly. People were always asking if I was pregnant, and it was really horrible as I was already super conscious of the weight gain. One guy even had a right go at me for smoking while pregnant!! I would speak to your GP to rule out any other causes, and maybe look into changing your medication.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 11/06/2019 16:19

Sorry OP, I don't think that looks like a baby bump either, it looks more like bloating. I think a baby bump has a bit more definition than that.

justasking111 · 11/06/2019 16:20

So you are vomiting frequently as well?

QuimReaper · 11/06/2019 16:22

I don't think OP is asking for advice on whether or not she's pregnant, just clarification that it doesn't resemble normal weight gain.

DrCristinaYang · 11/06/2019 16:23

Yeah Just, I don't know if it would be classed as frequently but I have vomited 5 times in the last month.

babysharkah · 11/06/2019 16:23
