To think this is a bit gross?

Visited friend today, and had lunch. While there she fed her cats and I noticed their bowls were identical in pattern to the plates we had used, and after she loads our plates with their bowls in the dishwasher. When I exclaimed that it was gross to mix them she told me the cats used bowls from the family set and the whole lot got put together but it's ok because she uses a hot wash on the dishwasher. I am vegetarian, and while I know when I eat out the plate I use has had meat on it at some point no doubt, this has made me totally heave and I think cat food and a cat eating from the same crockery as everyone else is just gross! I assume not dangerous, but maybe?
Won't be going there for lunch again 🤢🤮

I share apples bite for bite with my rabbit so wouldn't bother me Grin

BonAccordSpur · 09/06/2019 22:31

Haha yep totally disgusting..have a friend who lets her dog lick the plates as she putting them in the dishwasherHmm

bebeboeuf · 09/06/2019 22:33

Wouldn’t bother me. You can sterilise in dishwasher so it’s more clean than being hand washed for sure

Aridane · 09/06/2019 22:34

I struggle to understand the issue. She's not putting empty vials of Ebola in the dishwasher on a quick rinse

Josiebloggs · 09/06/2019 22:35

YANBU just reading the OP made me gag.
Animal bowls in the dishwasher is disgusting, even if it was boiling which it isn't.
I can't understand why anyone wouldn't get their pet their own feeding bowls.
I also hate animals in the kitchen or upstairs and litter trays in the house as well.

Hotterthanahotthing · 09/06/2019 22:41

I'm not sure why this is disgusting. You put clean food in a bowl and pet eats it.You put your clean food on a plate and eat it.Both go in a very hot disheasher.
If it comes down to whoses moth is worse then it is humans,we have far more nasty things in our mouths than most pets.

Prometheus · 09/06/2019 22:45

Doesn't bother me and I don't particularly like pets. My MIL does this then puts dishwasher on a boil wash.

The dog licks my face when it can reach it. It sits on the carpet (without wiping its arse) then my DS sits on the same carpet. If you think too much about these things you'd never leave the house for fear of germs.

ChocoholicsAsylum · 09/06/2019 22:47

Good for the immune system, darling Grin

adaline · 09/06/2019 22:50

All you people saying it's gross - presumably you never eat in restaurants then? Or the work canteen?

Because plenty of people don't wash their hands after using the toilet, or after they've sneezed everywhere, and then they'll be touching those same cups and plates and crockery that you use too.

My cats go on the work surfaces! But I clean them before preparing any food, as well as straight after. Why is it an issue? I don't understand why any of it's gross so long as you have a clean house and wash your hands etc. frequently.

FangsTasticBeast · 09/06/2019 22:55

I wouldn’t like it, saying that my dog eats it’s own and the cats shit if I don’t clean it up fast enough. And he’s constantly licking his balls and arse

I think people who let their dogs like their faces are pretty gross

FangsTasticBeast · 09/06/2019 22:56

Lick

Cherrysoup · 09/06/2019 22:59

@luckybird07 really? I am heaving at that and I’m crazy about my dogs.

Butchyrestingface · 09/06/2019 23:05

Wouldn’t bother me if they went in the dishwasher. Bit surprised that they don’t have dedicated plates for them though.

magneticmumbles · 09/06/2019 23:09

It's pet food, not shit. Do you know who tests pet food? Humans! That's right, humans eat cat and dog food to test its flavour and consistency. It's just food. It's no different to putting a gravy filled plate in the dishwasher.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 09/06/2019 23:11

I find that a bit grim as a regular thing. My family cat has stainless steel bowls, hot washed in the utility room sink daily. I would say DM is careful but not hysterical about hygiene usually, so this is a measure she takes seriously. Presumably because the cat rolls in dirt outside, scuds about in cat litter and licks her own bum. She's also not allowed on kitchen counter tops and kitchen/dining room tables- and actually doesn't try to get up there. On the rare occasions that she has investigated cups or plates left on the coffee table, they've been sluiced in boiling water before going in the dishwasher.

Weirdly though, we all let her lick our faces, we all just wash well later! DPs parents let their cat lounge on the kitchen countertops and although it always looks v clean in there, I find it grim knowing that the cat has been lolling about. He walks over glass chopping boards & over the cooker and likes sitting in the bread bin.

Wheresmywandharry · 09/06/2019 23:12

I share apples with my cat so yabuGrin

Also, surely you must realise that if you visit a house where meat eaters live that there will likely have been meat on the plate at some point? I mean unless people keep specific vegetarian plates?

LoafofSellotape · 09/06/2019 23:14

Animal bowls in the dishwasher is disgusting, even if it was boiling which it isn't

Buy why? Confused cat food is fit for human consumption in the UK unless I'm mistaken. That article up thread is from the US which sounds as though it's different.

Dishwashers don't need to be boiling they need to be over 63 degrees as a pp said so a cycle of 70 is fine.

Wheresmywandharry · 09/06/2019 23:14

I also hate animals in the kitchen or upstairs and litter trays in the house as well.

I live in a first floor flat with two indoor cats, so out of interest where do you think my cats and their litter trays should go?

I mean, is there a reason upstairs needs to be cleaner than downstairs?!

LoafofSellotape · 09/06/2019 23:22

I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't had the joy of experiencing a purring cat at the end of their bed at night Wink

Wheresmywandharry · 09/06/2019 23:24

I genuinely don't get people who don't like animals.

I'm not a huge dog person by and large in that I probably wouldn't want to own one myself because I don't like the smell of dog and because I find them too in your face (though having said that I own the world's most in your face cat!) but I still like them.

It’s not a good habit, certainly every one I know would be grossed out.
