To think this is a bit gross?

Visited friend today, and had lunch. While there she fed her cats and I noticed their bowls were identical in pattern to the plates we had used, and after she loads our plates with their bowls in the dishwasher. When I exclaimed that it was gross to mix them she told me the cats used bowls from the family set and the whole lot got put together but it's ok because she uses a hot wash on the dishwasher. I am vegetarian, and while I know when I eat out the plate I use has had meat on it at some point no doubt, this has made me totally heave and I think cat food and a cat eating from the same crockery as everyone else is just gross! I assume not dangerous, but maybe?
Won't be going there for lunch again 🤢🤮

SunnyGirl12 I've always rather suspected that the whole 'loo brush in the dishwasher' thing is more about posters trying to come up with things that will gross other posters out rather than anyone actually doing it.

I've never put anything but dishes in my dishwasher.

PivotPivotPivottt · 09/06/2019 20:01

🤮

I don't have a dishwasher but I have a seperate washing up sponge for my cat's dishes. I also hate when she walks on the worktops and tries to eat off my plate. I also said before I got her that letting pets sleep in your bed is disgusting but guess where my cat sleeps Blush. So I guess I'm a gross pet owner tooGrin

I can see where you are coming from, it’s probably me that’s a bit nasty, I let the cat and the dog sleep on my bed, I have been known to put my plate on the kitchen floor for the dog to eat the leftovers. I blame my upbringing, we had a house full of animals.
Now when it’s comes to sharing with humans I’m quite squeamish. I couldn’t ever eat the DC’s leftovers🤢

adaline · 09/06/2019 20:04

It really wouldn't bother me. But then I let my dog and cat lick my plate when I've finished eating!

DontCallMeShitley · 09/06/2019 20:06

My cat gets really annoyed when I use his bowl for my husband's dinner. He is worried he will catch something.

Seriously, our dishwasher washes at 70 degrees if required, unless it is way over-filled there is never anything stuck to the contents, and never much in the filter when I clean it.

All the crockery goes in together, ours and kitty bowls.

DontCallMeShitley · 09/06/2019 20:10

Posted too soon... cat gets to use plates and bowls too.

Children however, no way would I use anything they had been using without sterilising it first and I won't use a fork that is someone else's.

I do clean the worktops due to cat bum even though he washes it thoroughly.

drigon · 09/06/2019 20:15

I don't do this myself, but it wouldn't bother me particularly.

Lucylou321 · 09/06/2019 20:15

My dog has his own bowls but I must confess I let him lick plates/pots before they go in the dishwasher.. he does a far better job of getting baked on food off than a dishwasher would on it's ownBlush

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/06/2019 20:20

Wouldn’t bother me. I’m more worried about the cat getting ill than me getting ill.

LazyFace · 09/06/2019 20:21

Even a dedicated cat/dog dish is disgusting, would never put it in the kitchen sink or dishwasher.
I was my animal dishes in the downstairs loo (with a dedicated sponge, of course).

After reading these comments... I started to understand a friend of mine who never eats anything 'home made' in other people's house.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 09/06/2019 20:33

I was my animal dishes in the downstairs loo

Sorry, I think this is a little bit Envy

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 09/06/2019 20:53

Wouldn't bother me but then as soon as I open the dishwasher one of my dogs is in there doing a pre wash 😂

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 20:58

I always laugh at these posts; think where your cat/dogs mouth has been? Think where yours has been and what’s been in it, not much better

This is MN, everyone gets their husbands to boil their cocks in detol before they go near them.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 20:59

And yes. Disgusting creatures.
Sticking their fingers in the dirt then picking their noses and eating it. Picking up slugs and snails. Licking their shoes. Putting anything their find in their mouths.

Oh wait

That’s children.

Crazybunnylady123 · 09/06/2019 20:59

Interesting stuff. So my cat has his own cat bowls, they are just his and I wash them in the sink with a separate scouring pad to the one used for us. I wash his bowls out twice a day before dinner and before bed. This looks after everyone’s health the cat included. But it wouldn’t bother me at all thinking about it - I just don’t do it.

Crazybunnylady123 · 09/06/2019 21:02

.....But he does sleep on the bed.
Not allowed on kitchen worktops though, he knows this.

Honeybee27 · 09/06/2019 21:20

Our dog licks plates which then go in the dishwasher - not that gross I don't think? He licks our faces so not much difference? What is it that you're worried about?

Bookworm4 · 09/06/2019 21:21

@larrygreysonsdoor
Jeezo, is it a dettol beaker now? Don’t fancy the taste of that 🙄🤣

tenbob · 09/06/2019 21:29

But doesn’t everyone put raw chicken chopping boards in the dishwasher, and safely assume it will completely clean them?

If I had to chose between the two, I would sooner lick a cat bowl than a chopping board with raw chicken but no one gets weird about eating from a plate that’s been washed with the board

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 09/06/2019 21:31

Our cats have separate bowls, and they are washed separately, although in the same washing up bowl (I just clean it afterwards). I find what op describes pretty gross, but ironically I’m not bothered by the odd time the cat licks a plate with eg salmon skin on or the last bit of milk from a cereal bowl. Blush

teddyhatesapples · 09/06/2019 21:32

Grim! This reminds me of the time MIL proudly told us the salad was from their garden. Nothing wrong with that of course....apart from the fact that their cat would take its morning dump where the lettuce grew. Fucking grim. Never again will I eat salad at my in-laws .

teddyhatesapples · 09/06/2019 21:36

I always laugh at these posts; think where your cat/dogs mouth has been? Think where yours has been and what’s been in it, not much better

Well it's definitely not been cleaning my arsehole that's for sure.

Marilynmansonsthermos · 09/06/2019 21:37

I'm a dog and cat owner, but I'm really shocked at how many on here let their dogs lick the plates before it goes in the dishwasher! No way

WanderingTrolley1 · 09/06/2019 21:38

That is grim. Yanbu.

motherheroic · 09/06/2019 21:42

I have a friend who allows her dog and cat to lick her plates clean and drink out of her cups. Also let's the cat parade on the kitchen counters. I make sure I eat before going to her house.
