To think this is a bit gross?

Visited friend today, and had lunch. While there she fed her cats and I noticed their bowls were identical in pattern to the plates we had used, and after she loads our plates with their bowls in the dishwasher. When I exclaimed that it was gross to mix them she told me the cats used bowls from the family set and the whole lot got put together but it's ok because she uses a hot wash on the dishwasher. I am vegetarian, and while I know when I eat out the plate I use has had meat on it at some point no doubt, this has made me totally heave and I think cat food and a cat eating from the same crockery as everyone else is just gross! I assume not dangerous, but maybe?
Won't be going there for lunch again 🤢🤮

@Teddy, you do know that organic vegetables are grown in manure enriched soil, don’t you?

Our pet dishes (separate ones) are boiled in the dishwasher alongside ours. Why on earth not?

cdtaylornats · 09/06/2019 21:44

Chances are the cat food is prepared to a higher standard than the human food.

Ludoole · 09/06/2019 21:46

I'm vegetarian and wash my dogs plate after ours. I wouldn't have an issue tbf... Hmm

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 21:46

YANBU. You are REALLY not supposed to mix pet food bowls and plates, with 'human food' bowls and plates. For so many reasons. I can't be arsed to list them. Just google it!

Sceptre86 · 09/06/2019 21:50

Maybe wise not to eat at their place again. Too a lot of people personal are very much part of the family, like kids even and so this is probably more common than you would think. Personally I agree with you and it would make me heave x

Sceptre86 · 09/06/2019 21:50

Personal? Pets even

GottaGetUp · 09/06/2019 21:51

I don’t understand germphobic cat owners. Do you ever pet you cats? Stroke them? You do realise they lick themselves all over? Wtf is the difference?

Allhailthesun · 09/06/2019 21:52

Op you are covered in billions of micro organisms excreting over you everyday.
You’ll be fine.

sheshootssheimplores · 09/06/2019 21:52

It wouldn’t bother me but then I’m not a vegetarian. If I were I think it would bother me.

Wildorchidz · 09/06/2019 21:53

🤮

sanityisamyth · 09/06/2019 21:54

It's completely revolting. Friends also let their dogs "clean" the plates in the dishwasher which I find gross as well.

🤢🤮🤢

Lazypuppy · 09/06/2019 21:55

Our dog licks our plates before they go in the dishwasher 🤷‍♀️

He has his own pet bowl for his food

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 21:56

@GottaGetUp

It's nothing to do with being germaphobic or precious, you are actually not mean to mix the two, for many reasons...

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 21:56

Not MEANT to mix the two!

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/06/2019 21:57

Probably good for your gut flora.

M0reGinPlease · 09/06/2019 21:57

@crazyasafox

What reasons? As it seems many of us on this thread have done it for years and are still here to tell the tale.

TooManyPaws · 09/06/2019 21:58

People have gross habits. I can't stand to see cats walking about on work surfaces/kitchen counters. They use those same paws to bury their stinking cats turds!

Doesn't bother me. I'm not so gross as to put my food directly on the work surface; it's either on a clean plate or a clean chopping board. You actually put food on a worktop?! Euww.

Some people would be amazed at what goes on fields if they won't eat from a vegetable patch if the cat uses it. I'm lucky in that my neighbour only puts the coo shed straw and dung on the barley field next to my house; there's a guy several farms over who uses human excrement and it stinks for miles, and days.

adaline · 09/06/2019 21:59

Why on earth is it a problem?

There are probably more germs on doorhandles than there are on your cat. Mine is currently curled up on my lap. I often kiss her on the head, and I let her drink the leftover milk from my cereal Shock

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 22:00

As I said earlier, google it. I cannot be arsed to list the reasons.

FairyBatman · 09/06/2019 22:00

No, blergh, I have 2 cats and used to have 2 dogs, they’ve always had pet dishes and they always get washed last in hot water. I don’t have a dishwasher as washing up is about the only domestic chore I don’t mind!

M0reGinPlease · 09/06/2019 22:01

@crazyasafox I'm okay thanks. Just off to share an ice lolly with the cat...

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 22:03

sigh seeing as people cannot be arsed......

A google search that took me 3 seconds pulled up this.....

www.vetstreet.com/dr-marty-becker/can-i-get-sick-if-i-feed-my-dog-using-regular-plates-from-the-cabinet

There are LOADS more articles!!!

From the one I put the link to......

We love our pets and consider them part of the family, but there’s one area in which I think separation is a must: Call me old-fashioned, but I’ve always advised against feeding pets and people from the same dishes. I’ll even go so far as to say that I think that pet food and water dishes should be washed separately from the dishes, glassware and silverware used by people.

That’s because bacteria such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)and leptospira, as well as some internal parasites, can be spread between pets and people. Kitchen hygiene can help keep the microscopic bugs at bay — and is especially important if you and your pets live with young children, seniors or people with compromised immune systems.

I'm not the only one with concerns: Both the FDA and the CDC warn of risks in handling pet food and treats and the potential for humans to get sick from Salmonella-related illnesses — which is why it is important to be careful.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 09/06/2019 22:05

Our cat has her own bowls, but they go in the dishwasher with the rest of the stuff. She also occasionally will lick yoghurt or cream from a human bowl.

sqirrelfriends · 09/06/2019 22:05

Probably is perfectly hygienic after being washed but still grim.

My ex's mum used to give plates to the dogs to lick after every meal. Still makes me feel a bit sick thinking about it.

DizzyPigeon · 09/06/2019 22:05

But that's clearly American information. EU pet food standards are actually enforced - unlike those in the US.
