To think this is a bit gross?

Visited friend today, and had lunch. While there she fed her cats and I noticed their bowls were identical in pattern to the plates we had used, and after she loads our plates with their bowls in the dishwasher. When I exclaimed that it was gross to mix them she told me the cats used bowls from the family set and the whole lot got put together but it's ok because she uses a hot wash on the dishwasher. I am vegetarian, and while I know when I eat out the plate I use has had meat on it at some point no doubt, this has made me totally heave and I think cat food and a cat eating from the same crockery as everyone else is just gross! I assume not dangerous, but maybe?
Won't be going there for lunch again 🤢🤮

Those saying it's ok, would you eat out of your pets bowl, assuming it's been cleaned?

Our dog eats his kibble out of his own bowl, but if he is getting scraps it is normally on a plate or if its the bits of raw chicken/meat we trim off he eats them directly off the chopping board before it goes in the dishwasher.

alcoholyoulater · 09/06/2019 19:48

marvellousnightforamooncup I was going to comment exactly that! I'd rather eat cat food myself than put a toilet brush in the dishwasher! 😷

Yes

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:51

@LarryGreysonsDoor
I'm not sure why it bothers me so much more. But also because the plate has been licked by an amimal that killed a rat earlier and then buried it's shit and licked it's arsehole...

I use an old dogs' bowl for tossing small salads, and occasionally for mixing up filler when decorating Grin

You might want to get yourself a new dishwasher though, yours sounds grim!

DizzyPigeon · 09/06/2019 19:51

Wouldn't bother me at all. And yes, if I had to, I would eat out of my cats bowl once it has been through the dishwasher. It's clean!

ParmaViolet44 · 09/06/2019 19:51

Believe me, that cat’s asshole has touched every surface of that home at some point so the bowls really shouldn’t bother you.
Oh that did make me laugh!

However on balance I think YANBU.
Our gorgeous, much-loved dog is not allowed to lick plates or anything like that, he has his own bowl and we wash things separately as DH is a wee bit squeamish (irrational as that may be in the grand scheme of things).

My DF would happily share a bowl with his dog and I remember once he washed up DDs baby bottles in the same water after he'd just washed his dog's bowl!

Bookworm4 · 09/06/2019 19:52

I always laugh at these posts; think where your cat/dogs mouth has been? Think where yours has been and what’s been in it, not much better 🙄🤣

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:53

To be clear, wouldn't put my toilet brush in the dishwasher either 🤢
Feel like I am on a different planet! Wtf!!! 😂

I consider myself pretty clean but I put my cat's plate and fork in the dishwasher. It has honestly never occurred to me not to?!

MaryPopppins · 09/06/2019 19:54

Presumably your friend lives with this cats and us yet to contract a hideous disease?

So goes to show it's not harmful.

Our pets have their own bowls. But equally they get a lick of empty ice cream dishes/yogurt spoons/something left on our plays they'd like.

Also they lick our actual selves. So seems silly to be worried about a clean plate. Cat food on a plate is less troublesome than say if someone defrosted raw chicken on one?

I love the cats more than most humans. No one in our family has been ill because of them. Other pet owners I know do similar.

YABU IMO.

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:54

@Bookworm4
But I brush my teeth after! 😳😂

DesperadoDan · 09/06/2019 19:55

This would not bother me at all, the plates go on a hot wash in the dishwasher. I’d rather eat off of plates my cat has eaten from than eating from plates that some humans have.
What happens when you go out to eat, the previous meals that were on the plate you are now eating from could very likely be meat dishes, what’s the difference?

PanamaPattie · 09/06/2019 19:55

This is grim. This is why I don't eat at any of my friends homes if they have pets. They may treat them as members of the family - for me, sharing plates is a step too. 🤢🤮

Boysey45 · 09/06/2019 19:56

I could think of much worse places a mouth could end up.

Chune · 09/06/2019 19:56

Wouldn't bother me.

My dishwasher gets things hotter than the sun, and if it ain't nailed down in this house, it goes through the dishwasher.

MyFavouritePlace · 09/06/2019 19:56

Yuck that's gross.

DesperadoDan · 09/06/2019 19:57

And yes I would eat from my pets bowls if they had been washed. I really can’t see the problem here but I am willing to accept that I am gross.

Deuxcaggages · 09/06/2019 19:57

Each there their own, but I find the idea of sharing plates with pets quite grim and I wouldn’t want to eat anything at your house.
My pets have always had their own bowls that are washed separately, with kitchen roll not regular dish cloth, would not put them in a dishwasher.

Cryalot2 · 09/06/2019 19:57

I wouldn't like it . I have trouble with but problems and have to be ultra careful at best.
My dog has different bowls which are specific dog bowls , they get hand washed in hot water as not dishwasher safe. Only dry food in them anyway, but still

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:58

@DesperadoDan
Yeah I acknowledged that in the op. But it's not just the meat, it's the cats licking and eating off it and then it all being washed together. And it might be irrational, but still it makes me feel sick... Sicker to realise it' common practice!

Namechangeishard · 09/06/2019 20:00

Replies have really surprised me, feel like I can never eat at a friend's with pets again!

I’ve seen this topic a few times and loads of people have piled on saying “it’s perfectly fine...they wash hot... you are weird for objecting....”

I’m with you op.
My IL’s wash their dogs dishes with their human dishes and it makes me Envy

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 09/06/2019 20:00

I have trouble with but problems

If anything you should be avoiding passing bacteria onto the dog!
