To think this is a bit gross?

Visited friend today, and had lunch. While there she fed her cats and I noticed their bowls were identical in pattern to the plates we had used, and after she loads our plates with their bowls in the dishwasher. When I exclaimed that it was gross to mix them she told me the cats used bowls from the family set and the whole lot got put together but it's ok because she uses a hot wash on the dishwasher. I am vegetarian, and while I know when I eat out the plate I use has had meat on it at some point no doubt, this has made me totally heave and I think cat food and a cat eating from the same crockery as everyone else is just gross! I assume not dangerous, but maybe?
Won't be going there for lunch again 🤢🤮

I put my cats bowl in the dishwasher with the normal plates

AphidEater · 09/06/2019 19:37

This wouldn’t bother me.

Believe me, that cat’s asshole has touched every surface of that home at some point so the bowls really shouldn’t bother you.

nespressowoo · 09/06/2019 19:37

Wouldn't bother me if they went in the dishwasher

isseywithcats · 09/06/2019 19:38

i have four cats and dont have a dishwasher but they do have dedicated cat bowls and i wash them after everything else has been however at the cat centre i volunteered at the staff coffee mugs went in with everything else and i can honestly say everything came out sparkling clean, steriliser hot and none of ever got anything from the mugs,

Mummoomoocow · 09/06/2019 19:39

Water needs to reach a temperature of at least 63 degrees to begin to kill bacteria and “sterilise” the plates. It then needs time to kill said bacteria. So long as it reaches that temp then who cares?

It’s worse to wear clothes. Unless you wash them at a temperature above 60 every time...

Bwekfusth · 09/06/2019 19:40

@marvellousnightforamooncup now that is grim. Seriously?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 09/06/2019 19:41

This wouldn’t concern me greatly, I have to say.

habibihabibi · 09/06/2019 19:41

My pet bowls are stainless steel and go in the dishy with everything else but like it all are always pre- rinsed .

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:41

But I don't lick clothes after the cats have or have their food on my clothes 😕

I put our cat stuff in the dishwasher with everything else. They eat out of older crockery that is stored in the crockery cupboard with the stuff we use. I would only use it for eating from now if desperate, but that’s because the bowls are a funny size for humans!

Laiste · 09/06/2019 19:42

I'm with you OP. Gross.

I don't have a dish washer, i hand wash everything, but I keep the cat dish totally separate from the other washing up. I use those pouch things so don't need a 'cat fork' any more, but when i did use tins i'd keep the cat fork separate, and again wouldn't wash it with our stuff.

SunnyGirl12 · 09/06/2019 19:42

Replies have really surprised me, feel like I can never eat at a friend's with pets again! 😂

OP posts:
Laiste · 09/06/2019 19:43

Oh and i don't use 'our' washing up brush on the cat dish either.

PookieDo · 09/06/2019 19:43

I don’t do this but that is because the cat makes a mess eating off flat plates

I am pretty sure it licks things without me knowing and I know it drinks out of water glasses 😂

It is my cat though I would inflict this on guests

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 09/06/2019 19:44

It does sound grim when you think about bits being left on it, but maybe they have a better dishwasher.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 09/06/2019 19:44

Yes, seriously. I've seen it crop up in here a few times over the years.

AmeriAnn · 09/06/2019 19:44

People have gross habits. I can't stand to see cats walking about on work surfaces/kitchen counters. They use those same paws to bury their stinking cats turds!

pigsDOfly · 09/06/2019 19:45

I wouldn't be bothered about the pet bowls going in the dishwasher but the idea of a pet eating off the same crockery as humans is pretty unpleasant.

You probably won't catch anything from a pet if the bowls are washed properly, but I'd find it really off putting to have to share my crockery with an animal. Why wouldn't you have separate bowls for pets?

Maybe I'm fussy, but I don't let my dog lick my face or kiss her nose as I've seen people do; she's an animal, her nose goes into some very nasty things.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 19:45

*It grossed me out because the idea of cat food being clogged in the dishwasher and swimming around with the other plates.

Why is cat food different to some tuna or chicken?

BrilliantYou · 09/06/2019 19:45

Don't really see the problem although our pets have their own bowls. Cat food can be consumed by humans, its just food!

Obnoxiousbeanie · 09/06/2019 19:46

Wouldn’t bother me, but I am a bit disgusting easygoing with food hygiene Blush

AguerosAngel · 09/06/2019 19:46

I’ve got four cats, their bowls go in the dishwasher with our pots, it never, ever occurred to me to do anything else! Confused

IHateUncleJamie · 09/06/2019 19:46

Plates going in the dishwasher with pet bowls - not a problem to me. Ddog’s bowl goes in our dishwasher.

Cats using humans’ crockery - eww. I know the dishwasher washes at 65 or 70 but even so. 😳 My ddog has his own dishes and we have ours. I wouldn’t eat out of his bowl, even though he only has dry food; likewise he doesn’t get to lick our plates. Confused

Iamtheworst · 09/06/2019 19:46

In terms of “bits” in the dishwasher all cat and dog food is safe for human consumption so not any different from any other meat.

yorkshirecountrylass · 09/06/2019 19:46

When we had cats their bowls went in the dishwasher, ditto dog bowls. My horses' bits (as in that goes in their mouths!!) and my stirrup irons go in there, as do my grooming brushes that I'm reasonably sure won't melt. The whole reason for that is it gets them so hot it practically boils them to the grim death. I wouldn't be in the slightest concerned :)
