The whole dressing gown in the supermarket thing

It's bad enough to see people going to their corner shop in a dressing gown at 9pm. But it's a busy Sunday afternoon and I shit you not there's a woman strolling around our massive local supermarket (in fact shopping park) ... in a onesie.

What the fuck is wrong with people?!

What on earth is wrong with that?

I really don't understand why people care about what to wear to a supermarket...

lazyarse123 · 10/06/2019 19:24

I work in a shop and I judge. The students in their dressing gown and uncombed hair and the bloke in his pjs and NO UNDERWEAR. Please has some respect for me if not for yourself.

Greencustard · 10/06/2019 19:49

The people round my way who wear their pjs in the shops are from a certain 'community'. They look around for anyone daring to look at them so they can start with the "What the f### are you looking at" carry on.

SuePerbly · 10/06/2019 20:46

I also have several degrees and have dressing issues due to disability. If someone can get on pyjama bottoms, they can get on other loose trousers of exactly the same shape and fastening, which are not nightwear.

LaurieMarlow · 10/06/2019 21:00

they can get on other loose trousers of exactly the same shape and fastening

So what’s the difference then?

Apart from that one is marketed as nightwear and one isn’t?

So some people on this thread are very keen to do what marketeers tell them to do and seem to think this conveys their higher standards and higher levels of self respect?

Sounds like total nonsense to me.

TheAverageJuror · 10/06/2019 21:20

@LaurieMarlow amen!

Pinkyyy · 10/06/2019 21:27

I totally agree @LaurieMarlow god forbid I tell them I've worn other clothes not marketed for me! I'll sit here in my men's shirt and hope nobody notices... The shame!!!

StoneofDestiny · 10/06/2019 23:56

Yeh - a nightie could be a dress and slippers could be shoes - so crack on turning up to the office in your nightie tomorrow, or at a family wedding at the weekend in your nightie and slippers.

Think the reaction you get will tell you what the difference is.

OldAndWornOut · 11/06/2019 00:07

I'm on the fence on this.
It does look slovenly, but then, who cares, and does it really matter?

I wouldn't do it, although I pop to the shop in my slippers sometimes.

TheAverageJuror · 11/06/2019 00:34

Not a best example... You wouldn't turn up there in a mini jeans shorts and crop top either, yeat they are outsidewear🤷‍♀️ or joggers🤷‍♀️

I agree. It's as if we have unspoken social rules, isn't it, about what is appropriate to wear.

Honestly, if someone doesn't want to get dressed for health or disability reasons, I think most people understand that.

It sounds ridiculous, I know, but this is about more than what someone wears.

It feels as if it is about a group of people who do not give care what anyone thinks of them, and do whatever they feel. Which is harmless when it comes to clothing.

Sadly, the stinking of weed and confrontational "what the fuck are you looking at?", means that some of these people will also view other social and/or legal rules with contempt. Which is selfish and antisocial.

The pyjamas are pretty much a flag saying "possible person here who has complete contempt for society". That's why it gets on my nerves.

Jttlttb · 11/06/2019 02:44

I work from home and pretty much live in 'day pyjamas bottoms' or onesies. I've popped out in my onesie before, it's no difference from a tracksuit and a hoody.

Yeah. Like people in pretty dresses and suits are always well behaved🙄 Examples you put were different to supermarkets. One is work where it is often stated in contract what kind of clothes, for example uniform or business wear. Wedding is formal unless stated otherwise. Supermarket is. Well, whatever.

I would rather be walking around in pj than being one of the judgy twats 🤷‍♀️ It's just clothes and as long as they have some, I honestly couldn't care whether it was sold as indoor or outdoor clothing. 🤷‍♀️

SuePerbly · 11/06/2019 08:41

TheAverageJuror I didn't give any examples....I was quoting someone else Confused

OldAndWornOut · 11/06/2019 08:50

I wonder if Michael Gove wore pyjamas whilst he was sniffing coke?

Likethebattle · 11/06/2019 09:39

A girl got on our flight to Palma in a onesie with rollers in. All I thought was how roasting she’d feel in Palma airport (aka non air conditioned hellhole) . It only takes 5 minutes to throw on jeans and a hoodie.

Society is dressing a lot less formal than in the past

^This. I remember 'Sunday best' for church or going out for lunch, that certainly seems a thing of the past. I also noticed at the last parent's day at my ds' school that the vast majority of women were wearing yoga pants but the men where all wearing suits.

StoneofDestiny · 11/06/2019 10:09

Not a best example... You wouldn't turn up there in a mini jeans shorts and crop top either, yet they are outside-wear or joggers

Nor would people consider them sleepwear.

Sleepwear is easily distinguishable to most people and is especially made for bed and not made for walking around outside the home.
There really are a lot of comfortable, loose fitting, clothes to choose from without resorting to wearing bedclothes outdoors.

Freudianslip1 · 11/06/2019 10:16

Years ago there were 2 women who worked in a lab that were not British and when microfibre fleece pyjamas came in they wore them into work as part of their winter wardrobe. It was very amusing to see someone look very professional with lab coat on from waist up and when they came out from the counter had multi coloured, stripy jammy bottoms on. They were both perplexed to discover that these were considered night wear rather than clothes designed to keep you warm at work.

Trebla · 11/06/2019 10:18

I did two school runs and a maccas drive through with three kids in my pjs and slippers today. In my defense I'm 9 months pregnant and started mat leave today.

SupermassiveBlackHo · 11/06/2019 10:24

Why do you say "bed clothes" are for a bed though? If you put them on your body and are not in a bed, do they leap off you in protest? Why are my rainbow cupcake trousers only acceptable if I'm lying horizontally in my boudoir, not popping to Tesco for a pint of milk? Why do people care if I have cupcakes on my legs or denim?

pineapplebryanbrown · 11/06/2019 10:28

I remember in the late 70s my older sisters going to a night club in their pyjamas. Faces and hair done etc. I hope it was for a bet.

pineapplebryanbrown · 11/06/2019 10:33

I would and have nipped out in a nightie tucked into leggings with a coat over for a late night pint of milk.
