The whole dressing gown in the supermarket thing

It's bad enough to see people going to their corner shop in a dressing gown at 9pm. But it's a busy Sunday afternoon and I shit you not there's a woman strolling around our massive local supermarket (in fact shopping park) ... in a onesie.

What the fuck is wrong with people?!

I think it's all part of the general relaxing of standards regarding dress codes. There's been a continuous lowering of standards of dress over the last 40 or 50 years.

I remember a time when men never went out without a jacket and tie on and, if wearing a coat, would always wear a hat.

In the early '80s when I was a young adult, it wasn't at all unusual for people to wear evening-wear to the theatre - and I mean small, provincial theatre not West End. Nowadays, most people look like they've just finished a stint of gardening! Jeans, grubby trainers etc seems to be the norm.

In the recent past, all men who worked in offices, without exception wore suits every day. Men who worked in the City wore bowler hats. Women would wear hats and white gloves at formal events.

I guess wearing ones pyjamas is about as "relaxed" as it can get. I have yet to see someone turn up at a theatre in a onsie, but it's probably only a matter of time before that happens!

@80sMum So do you think it's just relaxed clothing?

I was always working on the assumption that it was what they wore to bed and they just could't be arsed to get changed.

I have two t-shirts I wear to work that were sold as pj tops. They don't look like pjs and wash well, never had a single comment.

How are people not cold, don't get wet or alternatively too hot wearing bed clothes out ? There are few days indeed in the UK when thin pyjamas bottoms and a t-shirt would give you adequate protection from the elements. As my Mum would say, what if the car broke down ?

I go swimming at work most mornings. During the school holidays they use the pool for kids' swimming lessons. I noticed recently that loads of the kids turn up in their pyjamas, and not toddlers. You'd have thought they'd be embarrassed.
