The whole dressing gown in the supermarket thing

It's bad enough to see people going to their corner shop in a dressing gown at 9pm. But it's a busy Sunday afternoon and I shit you not there's a woman strolling around our massive local supermarket (in fact shopping park) ... in a onesie.

What the fuck is wrong with people?!

its about standards, values, ethics.... and going out in your pjs shouts chav.

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 19:57

If you look like a slob, you can't be annoyed that people judge you as one.

If I wear a bright red ball gown with a tiara in Asda, I would also be judged.

Actually, when when I am wearing a short skirt and high knee boots I get a few angry looks, so I am pretty sure I am being judged there too Grin

anitagreen · 09/06/2019 19:58

@SrSteveOskowski So because I go to the shops in pjs hair in a messy bun no face of makeup on I don't care about myself? Come on what a load of complete bollocks ! So I should swap my pjs for the exact same bottoms but in a normal black colour that probably doesn't have flowers on just because to you I may look like I don't care about myself? Christ Shock

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 20:00

So because I go to the shops in pjs hair in a messy bun no face of makeup on I don't care about myself?

that's pretty much the definition of not caring about yourself

DeadDoorpost · 09/06/2019 20:02

6 months pregnant and will happily go shopping in pyjamas. Nothing else is comfy enough for an hour of walking around sorting stuff out.

I don't do the shopping often. But I was already in pjs last night when my nan realised she had run out of electricity. I walked the 5 mins there and back in them to get some for her.

Cryalot2 · 09/06/2019 20:08

Maybe it's because of my age or because I am a lot like my late gran mother, but I always dress every day and put on what I call my "base face "make up.( which is moisturiser, foundation and brows,)
Even when very ill I dress , usually in something loose and comfy.
I would be too ashamed to be otherwise. But then I am not remotely lookable without base face .
It only takes a few minutes to dress

TheoriginalLEM · 09/06/2019 20:15

Who honestly gives a shit? I'd draw the line at naked and topless men make me uncomfortable but pjs? Meh

ilovesooty · 09/06/2019 20:17

And another person throwing chav into the mix. Do you actually use that word as an everyday thing and have others in your social circle who do?

fairynick · 09/06/2019 20:20

Men in dirty work clothes are often found in supermarkets picking up their tea after a day's graft. Never have I seen them be referred to as unhygienic, lacking in self respect, skanks or chavs.
There's nothing worse than seeing women hating women, and Mumsnet seems to be the exact place where this is happening at the moment.
Well done to those who like to have a full face and a freshly ironed outfit every time you leave the house, would you like a medal?

fairynick · 09/06/2019 20:22

This thread has actual made me want to swan into my local Asda in a big grubby dressing gown and onesie, wonder how many middle class women's eyes will burn off.

user1494050295 · 09/06/2019 20:26

Google Walmart on youtube and you will see the gallows of humanity (pjs) and other outfits which are beyond grim

Betty777 · 09/06/2019 20:27

if you are over 6 years old, it's weird

TripleTKA · 09/06/2019 20:28

I wear gym clothes when I’m not going to the gym, can’t say I’m too bothered about people wearing pjs when they’re not going to bed and really can’t see what the ‘hygiene issues’ are that people are so quick to moan about,
What about people that have been at work all day and go to the shop? Should they not be served as they are a bit sweaty or grubby.
I get more het up about people who use the bathrooms and don’t wash their hands after Wink

TSSDNCOP · 09/06/2019 20:29

Cryalot I find getting up and showering/getting dressed makes me feel a little better.

My nana used to wear a hat and gloves to the Co-Op.

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 20:30

fairynick
not sure where you saw that anyone cringe at women in dressing gown or pjs in public, but applaud men who do so?

How do you manage to turn that into a woman-hating-thing is amazing. Chavs is quite a gender neutral concept you know.

BogglesGoggles · 09/06/2019 20:30

I remember reading an article knceaboutfancy PJs youcan get away with wearing on the school run because they could pass for ugly normal clothes. I for one can’t waitfor my kids to be old enough to chuck out of the car as I drive past the school so I can never wear real clothes again.

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 20:31

Asda might not be the right background for your drama, at least choose the right shop Smile

TSSDNCOP · 09/06/2019 20:34
you Grin
LaurieMarlow · 09/06/2019 20:36

its about standards, values, ethics.

What utter nonsense. Pray tell how it’s about ‘ethics’. I’m all ears.

You’ve lost any moral high ground you hoped for by throwing around the c word anyway.

fairynick · 09/06/2019 20:50

I'm so sorry that I forgot that chav is a hate word for working class people of ALL GENDERS, that makes it much better!
At the end of the day, clothes are just clothes. I don't understand why people can't get to grips with the fact that these imaginary dress codes are just social constructs, and the fact that you wear boring brown slacks to Spar does not make you any better than the person in the next aisle wearing trousers with sleeping unicorns on.. actually, going by some of the posts on this thread, it's a good way to tell that you're actually an awful person.

70sWitch · 09/06/2019 20:59

Society is becoming much less formal clothes wise. Over the last 10 years or so, most offices have become more casual. Gym wear / leisurewear is very prevalent

Not sure why you think this is necessary a good thing.

I hate that standards are slipping in this way myself. I think it's a shame. It shows a lack of respect for others and oneself.

Also, there's massive difference between a man(or woman for that matter) in his/her dirty work clothes just after or during work hours and anyone out and about in their nightwear for no good reason.
Talk about a false equivalence.

TSSDNCOP · 09/06/2019 21:10

Just about everything we do every day is a "social construct".

Ivy44 · 09/06/2019 21:15

@70sWitch
This is true. I work in a professional environment, no one wears a suit anymore. It’s casual, unless you are seeing clients. Men will wear a suit if they are seeing clients, but no tie. Women a dress and smart cardigan. I still have standards through, roots, nails and brows are always neat and I wear make up even if I’m in jeans and trainers.

I still think the wearing pyjamas to the supermarket trend was part of a ploy to sell us more (and probably designer) “sleep wear”. I don’t think anyone would want to see me in my scruffy old M&S PJs (and I wouldn’t inflict it on the world).

MorondelaFrontera · 09/06/2019 21:17

boring brown slacks to Spar does not make you any better than the person in the next aisle wearing trousers with sleeping unicorns on.

it's not the unicorn print people are judging, it's the use of nightwear and inappropriate clothing. Time and a place... Your local supermarket is not the right place to wear nightwear, neither is the local school

How does this need to be even said is beyond me.

LocksMyth · 09/06/2019 21:24

It's common attire in the local Toby Carvery round here, as is popping to the corner shop wrapped in a duvet. Not my thing, but hey ho..
