Dentist in tesco tackled me

Shopping with 3 year old yesterday. Stopped by the raisins. Old woman came up to me and said "excuse me but please don't buy them. They are terribly bad for teeth" I must have looked incredulous because her husband stepped in to say she was a dentist

Aibu to think go away and let me shop in peace? I'm a sensible grown adult who can make choices

OP posts:

"There is a place to make such comments and that is when you are having a consultation with them, not when you are shopping getting on with your every day business."

Some parents don't take their children to the dentist often enough. Also, by the time they have a consultation in six months' time the raisins might have done some damage.

I was told the same for ds; by emergency nurse. She said that she had seen many children who had fallen ...and the lolly was forced into the back of their throat.

So. I only gave dc safety suckers with string handles. Ds sucked entire thing: Candy disc AND string handle in and I had to finger sweep to pull it out of his mouth.

Sounds like a very rude person .
What you have in your trolley is no ones business. Dentist or not there is no excuse for bad manners.

Howtedious · 09/06/2019 21:43

@BIWI I have no idea why so many MNetters seem to think that ageism is acceptable, because (by and large) they wouldn't think that racist or sexist or homophobic comments would be.

Agree with this BIWI.

And, I didn't realise that raisins were so bad for your teeth. Makes sense when you think about it. So I've learnt something today thanks to that 'old' woman (AKA dentist).

crazyasafox · 09/06/2019 21:59

What's the betting this 'OLD' woman was about 48?!! Grin

maimainomai · 09/06/2019 22:14

crazyasafox

Does it matter? Old generally means not in the same age range/above that age range (in my experience at least). My 15 yo cousin recently told me that I was old... Because I am indeed old to her. 🤷🏻‍♀️

RiversDisguise · 09/06/2019 22:27

BIWI

@RiversDisguise

Why so determined not to see that the OP is ageist?

I just don't go around spotting ill intent in everything and lecturing people accordingly.

Mumsnet has enough of that sancti-moany-arse BS.

Boneshere · 09/06/2019 22:35

The amount of sugar in them is disgusting, my dentist has them stuck to the wall (and other snacks) with plastic bags of sugar next to them showing how much is in them. I was gobsmacked.

user1472151176 · 09/06/2019 22:38

Surely raisins in moderation is perfectly acceptable? A small box a couple of times a week is fine isn't it? My 3 year old eats them - loves raisins! After a PPH with my 1st born my midwife recommended raisins because they're a good source of iron. Isnt that the thing about diets - everything in moderation and well balanced keeps us healthy?

I'm team raisins!!

user1472151176 · 09/06/2019 22:41

Also can I point out, everyone is jumping up saying op mentioned 'old' and its not relevant but neither is mentioning that it was also a woman. It was simply a description and setting the scene.

BIWI · 09/06/2019 23:02

@RiversDisguse

I just don't go around spotting ill intent in everything and lecturing people accordingly

Nor do I. I have a life. However, when I spot ageism/sexism/racism/homophobia I will call it out. No lecturing. Unless people need it to be pointed out to them, like you did Hmm

Mumsnet has enough of that sancti-moany-arse BS

You really think that calling out ageism qualified as sanctimonious bullshit? Would you say the same about racist posts? Or sexist ones? Or homophobic ones?

There's not enough of it, quite frankly, if people who share your views still exist.

Iwantdoesntget · 09/06/2019 23:05

I lived on raisins, and malt growing up. I have 4 fillings.

I don’t think raisins are bad in moderation.

I do find it offensive when people chastise my parenting but she (however old) was passing on correct info because she cared no doubt. Take it at face value x

BIWI · 09/06/2019 23:10

@user1472151176

It was simply a description and setting the scene

Really?

How about if the OP had written:

Shopping with 3 year old yesterday. Stopped by the raisins. Black woman came up to me and said ...

or

Shopping with 3 year old yesterday. Stopped by the raisins. Lesbian woman came up to me and said ...

It's simply not relevant, is it?

Unless, of course, you want to insinuate that there's something unpleasant about said woman because she's old ...

RiversDisguise · 09/06/2019 23:19

There's not enough of it, quite frankly, if people who share your views still exist.

Lol....ok then. I'll leave you to it.

Linzbe · 09/06/2019 23:21

The thing is, she presumed the raisins were for your child, I buy raisins for my work lunches (I'm 36) cos they are a easy fruit to eat and don't require any prep. Why should people be allow to assume something about what you're doing with YOUR life and pass judgement on it, to your face? If something doesn't effect you / isn't dangerous to other people around you just let people live their lives!!

user1472151176 · 09/06/2019 23:26

Woman is also not relevant - why not say sexism whilst we're at it?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 09/06/2019 23:38

And frankly no need to mention Tesco either. Talk about giving a supermarket a bad name. People will be going elsewhere for their raisins just in case.

BIWI · 09/06/2019 23:41

Why is it, though, that calling out ageism is seen as something to deride?

Posters like @RiversDisguise and @user1472151176 and @OutwiththeOutCrowd - perhaps you'd like to defend ageism?

RiversDisguise · 09/06/2019 23:54

You have an axe to grind and you keep summonsing me hither from my morning activities, namely ritually sacrificing passing pensioners. Begone.

LadyBahBahBah · 09/06/2019 23:56

Cool story dude. Not enough dragons. Cancel the cheque.Whatever..,

springydaff · 09/06/2019 23:56

I absolutely wouldn't mind at all someone saying something like that to me in a supermarket. Neither would I mind someone telling me my cardi is inside out. We'd have a laugh and a chat and I'd say thank you blah blah and it would be a nice social exchange.

I am genuinely baffled at this very strong response and cries of 'rude!' etc. I just don't get that at all if I'm honest.

BIWI · 10/06/2019 00:00

@RiversDisguise

Hilarious.

Explain why you think ageism is justified.

user1472151176 · 10/06/2019 00:02

@BIWI I'm still confused Confused why ageism and not sexism?

MrsFezziwig · 10/06/2019 00:16

I’ve always found the saying “it takes a village to raise a child” quite a comforting one, but it certainly cuts no ice on Mumsnet.

DeaflySilence · 10/06/2019 00:18

Clearly loads of opposing research conclusions ... but it seems that the MN dentists/dentist's parents/dental patients/dentist's children/everybody really, have all decided to follow the 'raisins-are-bad' concluding research.

Has this v v v all been debunked then? (And, if so, when?)
