We didn't use come and praise, our hymn book was 'junior praise' but I recognise so many of the songs you're talking about!
The knight one and one about milk bottle tops obviously weren't in Junior praise because I don't recognise them at all, but they sound great Grin

Lord of the Dance, Sing Hosanna and colours of day were my faves!

The eighties were a bit name pamby. In the sixties we had proper hymns with proper tunes. I tried to persuade my DD to have the Battle Hymn of the Republic at her wedding but she wouldn’t. She is having ‘Lord do the Dance’ when she could have this:-

“Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the lord,
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He hath loosed the fateful lightning
of His terrible swift sword,
His truth is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

I have seen Him in the watch fires
of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar
in the evening dews and damps,
I can read his righteous sentence
in the dim and flaring lamps,
His day is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

I have read a fiery Gospel
writ in burnished rows of steel,
"As ye deal with My contemners
so with you My grace shall deal,"
Let the Hero born of woman
crush the serpent with His heel,
Since God is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

He has sounded forth the trumpet
that shall never call retreat,
He is sifting out the hearts of men
before His judgment seat,
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him!
Be jubilant, my feet,
Our God is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

The following stanzas are presented
as sung by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 1960

In the beauty of the lilies
Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in his bosom
that transfigures you and me,
As He died to make men holy
let us live to make men free,
His truth is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

He is coming like the glory
of the morning on the wave,
He is wisdom to the mighty
He is honor to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstoolw
and the soul of wrong His slave,
Our God is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on “

Cracking stuff and a tune to die for.

Oh and Mr Noah built an ark, and 'don't build your house on the sandy land, don't build it to near the shore' Grin

Bloody hell what a throwback! Grin

Zoflorabore · 09/06/2019 20:50

Haven't RTFT but my fave ever is "god's spirit is in my heart"
And go tell everyone.......

I went to a catholic primary school. My now 16yr old ds went there too and my dd (8) is there now. At one service a few years ago this was the hymn and I almost wet myself with excitement Blush

ShortStuff74 · 09/06/2019 21:07

I ♥️ Make me a Channel of Your Peace too!

LarryGreysonsDoor · 09/06/2019 21:08

I have a taker for the book.

Another dyed in the wool card carrying atheist who loves singing them.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/06/2019 21:20

@toffeeghirlwhirl I remember Yellow Bird (up high in banana tree), ‘‘twas very creole/reggae but not the other stuff you remember. Funny how one’s brain works forgetting some important stuff and remembering something so trivial!

icelolly99 · 09/06/2019 21:22

What a fun and nostalgic thread. Brilliant!

PlinkPlink · 09/06/2019 21:34

O Lord all the world belongs to you
And you are always making all things new
What is wrong you forgive
And the new life you give
Is what's turning this world upside down

Loved hymns when I was younger 🙈🙈

homemadegin · 09/06/2019 21:35

Lovely thread.

Outing, but hey. Dh wanted if I had a hammer when we got married many years ago!! We were overruled.

After many, many years of infertility, and many more losses, we christened our miracle DD a few weeks ago. It was very important to our families and to us for emotional reasons. Whilst we don't attend regularly at all, my gran passed away before meeting DD and went every week.

The minister said he occasionally lets parents chose one hymn, it being part of a normal service and all.

After meeting with us and hearing our story he agreed to all hymns. Blush

Lord of the dance/ I danced in the morning
Colours of day
When I needed a neighbour
One more step along the world I go

And of course taking us into the christening, who put the colours in the rainbow.

I didn't turn round the entire service as I honestly never thought I would be having a christening. When I did I nearly passed out. The entire church was standing room only. We only invited a few people. The local community came out in force. It was just lovely. They put away the hymn books and everyone just had come and praise. Dh still muttering about if I had a hammer being excluded!!

whoisyou · 09/06/2019 21:40

Ah memories Grin

We all used to cheer with excitement in assembly when Shine Jesus Shine was chosen!

whoisyou · 09/06/2019 21:42

@homemadegin that's so wonderful!

itsmesoitis · 09/06/2019 21:53

@Myusernameismud If I'm feeling down I thumb through Junior Praise and belt out all the ones I know. "Jubilate Everybody..."

Upanddownandroundagain · 09/06/2019 22:06

How about ‘love is something if you give it away’?

‘It’s just like a magic penny, hold it tight and you won’t have any. Lend it, spend it and you’ll have so many, they’ll roll all over the floor!’

And I still sing Milk Bottle Tops And Paper Bags in my head at least twice a week.

toffeeghirlinatwirl · 09/06/2019 22:16

@GiantKitten 🤣🤣🤣

Dontburstmybubble · 09/06/2019 22:17

Love this thread . I had shine jesus shine at my wedding and now I cant stop singing autumn days in my head .
My son started school in Sept and is amazed when he starts to sing a 'new' hymn that I already know it. It's been a real nostalgia trip hearing him

Myusernameismud · 09/06/2019 22:19

itsmesoitis 'Jubilate Deeeeeoooooo'

JaceLancs · 09/06/2019 22:29

I loved the workers carol by Paul petrocokino
It was all about blast fires and the production line
Please PM me if you know the lyrics

JaceLancs · 09/06/2019 22:32

I also liked the calypso carol but can remember the words
‘See him a lying on a bed of straw
A draughty stable with an open door
Mary cradling the babe she bore
The prince of glory was his name....”

bonbonours · 09/06/2019 22:52

We never sang the Cauliflowers one at school though we did have come and praise and I recognise loads of the others mentioned here. But my kids sang the Cauliflower one a few years back at their very non-religious infant school harvest festival.

Oysterbabe · 09/06/2019 23:02

I like the one that goes

I've seen the light
I've seen the light
And that's why my heart sings
I've known the joy
I've known the joy
That loving Jesus brings

overandunder9 · 09/06/2019 23:08

I bought all of those books as a kid and would play the songs at home on the piano, belting them out. My teacher found out about this and got me to play in assembly instead of her when she had other stuff to do or couldn’t be arsed.
